Thanks Gerda, I just need that website address www.holiday.oranjemundonline.com to be sent to as many folk as possible around the world, maybe for every 1000 emails, one decides to come here for a holiday.... every one person that comes here will help the local economy and for the town to look at an alternative source of income as opposed to DeBeers!

I am off to the States next week, visiting one of my brothers living in Philadelphia and I will certainly spread the word there.

Hope for the survival of Oranjemund that the venture takes off, will they be allowed to tour the mine 'etc'.....................Frank

Re Frank's question about touring the mine; I heard a "positive" remark in an environmental talk session today about land rehab.
Apparently not all mining dumps will be reprofiled as some are impractical to do and may be earmarked as part of the "mining tourism" plan. I mean gee, how can you draw people to see the history of a mining town and there isn't even a mine dump to be seen, isn't that half the attraction..?

Andy, thats exactly what I referred to on another post a few months back...... most of the mining equipment (history) has been cut up and removed as scrap to keep the greenies happy, all that history gone, My big sugeestion was to turn the vacant power station and yard into a large open and indoor mining museum, put some of the old tanks , a bucket wheel in the yard, get companies like bell, Atlas, Krupp to sponsor the painting of the machines and then you will have one of the largest mining museums in Africa...... right here in Omund..... sadly the people who's responsibility it is to preserve the heritage of this Sperrgebiet of ours....... don;t see it that way.........

who wants to come and see another piece of unspoilt desert...... there;s plenty of it further north, we have to offer something different.....

Just my 2 cents

Verstaan jy... Alf & were talking about the old machine section at Uubvley scrapyard just this morning. The likes of the old lowbed, the Holland(?) loader, the supervacs, the last minivac that stood on the grass outside the old compressor w/shop where your dad worked; and some of the old scoops near South Works. The old Komatsu dozer at 4 plant scrap yard. Especially some of the more unique pieces, the CDM specials. I think this mine must have had some of the strangest contraptions in its arsenal of mining machines over the years.

I just thought it would be pretty awesome to have the bucket wheel monster standing in the yard at the power station .... well at least part of the bucket wheel...... what an attraction that would be...

Then what about those 50's machines, the converted tanks, they look like contraptions from Star Trek or the likes thereof......

Imagine being allowed to marked the Sperrgebiet Open Air Mining Museum? Job creation and most definatly one of the major tourist attractions in the Southern part of Namibia,,,,,, But THE PEOPLE WHO SHOULD BE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS (THE ones that are always having meetings and proclaiming that they are "sustaining " the town)..... are not ... instead they tinker with aquafarming and mushrooms in a backroom,.....
