Things I Remember About Oranjemund! / Re: Kolmanskop

Thanks for that Leon.

There is a German lady in town, originally from Swakopmund. As a child during the school holiday's, she and her sister could decided to visit grandparents who lived in Kolmanskuppe or family that lived on a farm.

They always chose Kolmanskuppe. This was in the 50's.

She told me a few tales and reckons that she has a box full of old photographs from her parents era. Nobody wants them , so on one of her return trips from Swakop she will bring them over to me to scan...

Looking  forward to this...

Last night I had the opportunity to point out to Israel the drainage holes that we find around the base of the houses in Oranjemund.

I explained to him that sometime in the late 70's or early 80's the houses in Oranjemund were past their initial shelf life and were starting to experience severe damp. So in order to extend the lifespan of the houses, CDM brought in a contractor to drill holes around the base of the buildings in town.

I recall as a child seeing them perform this at our house, rows of little tubes sticking out of the walls with a suction pumps draining moisture...

Afterwards, the house was painted and holes covered...

The mine had managed to extend the lifespan of their houses...

What I cannot recall , was what was the exact year that this exercise was performed?

It must be more than thirty years ago......

Well the real world is slowly catching up.......

Two homeless chaps were sleeping on the bench at the Post Boxes, one under his blanket, shoes tucked nicely away next to him , the other sitting upright against the wall....

A beggar is also currently hanging around the ATM at Bank Windhoek begging from people....

...and have a ZA sticker on the back of the car...

There is also a road fund levy on SA cars once you clear the Namibian Customs and Immigration ...

Nada, your house has been vacated again, as we watch Allied Service complete the circle of life and move all their offices back to the Rec Club like it was twenty years ago....
