Condolences to Heather,Barry,Megan and Mandy on the passing of their husband/father.

Cliff Jones was an upstanding man who had a big heart and a soft voice.

I always admired his strong morals and principals and the way he always cared about everyone else.

He maintained an amazing garden on the corner house on 9th Avenue in Oranjemund.

Go Well Brother!

Well I guess Riaan is correct , mines are not infinite and will close...

What gets me though, is the  belief that the town will still be a good town to invest in.

A place where one can still reside after the mining comes to a close.

Disposable income in the town has already diminished extensively and once the locals become "normalized" as any other town we are going to see the local economy come crashing down!

Through no fault of anyone on particular, that's just how mines roll......

I think in the long term, perhaps in 10 years from  now we shall see the town establishing herself, sadly by that time the damage will have been completed.

Any person wanting to invest financially in the town will need to have deep pockets ........ it's going to be a rough ride....

Tired of repeating myself, but had a nature conservation official in my office, heading off to two locations in the town to investigate the killing of yet two more of our treasured beasts.

The numbers of the two herds that wandered both the town and golf club has dropped dramatically and sadly the days of herds numbering more than ten are over.

On a side note, yes! I am bitter, these animals were MAJOR tourist attractions to the town and we forewarned the powers that be that this was going to happen,

I even heard someone mention that they saw a springbok being cut up at a local contracting camp.

I recall meeting German tourists in Oranjemund two years ago that were only here because the wife had seen images of the Gemsboks wandering around the town and wanted to visit such a unique place.

It saddens me greatly that the official policy of  the MET (Ministry of Environment and Tourism) is that the beasts that wander the town are not their responsibilty but the OTC (Oranjemund Town Councils) , seemingly only the animals that wander in the surrounding National Park are the responsibility of MET!

It should never have gone this way.......... this town of ours.........

Old Oranjemunders Eddie Heusdens had been working on a video of the town and it's surroundings a few years before his retirement.

Great to see that he has officially released it to the public.

Please see the below!

It was nice to hear from Ann again, although not in the best of circumstances.

She contacted me to inform me of the passing of her father. One of the pioneering folk from the early days of Oranjemund.

I quote from her email.

Quote
The reason for me contacting you on this occasion is to ask if you could list my dad under "Lost Diamonds" as he sadly passed away last week at the age of 97.

You might (or might not!) recall that our family moved to OM in the early 50's and left in the late 60's.  There is no doubt time spent in Oranjemund was the happiest time of his life.  He loved the town, his work, the sport, social life and the many, many friends he made.  When he acquired a laptop for a short time, the only website he ever looked at was yours!  Unbeknownst to us, he meticulously preserved his Oranjemund Recreation Club (ORC) badge denoting his membership of the badminton and soccer section.  He was a very good badminton player.  When we found it tucked in his drawer, we knew he would be pleased if it went with him.

Another on of the old stalwarts of that had legendary status back in the good 'ol Oranjemund Days.

Phillipus Jacobus Meyer (Flip) 28/4/1936 -14/8/2019

I know old man Arthur Conry sits in my office daily and at least once a week talks about his old mate Phill, mentioning Kleinzee days.

Condolences  to the family.......
