Title: The Great Hohenfels Camp - August 2009!
Post by: Michael Alexander on August 28, 2009, 08:45:19 PM
Well, Uncle Stennie and myself, took the kids and their cousins to the local camp spot, Hohenfels. Just a mere 20 minute drive out of Oranjemund, along the Orange river, one encounters a thick forest of very tall tree's...... Being here feels like being in a Jungle in the tropics, very surreal, with plenty of wildlife and the ever present Namib Sandsea in the background........

Well we camped for three nights, had an awesome time, saw the monkey's and swam in the river..... Why more Oranjemunders don;t go camping here on the weekends, confounds me......

Some incredible sunrises also.......

In no particular order , here are a few snaps....

One cannot describe those early morning sunrises..... the sounds that go with it..... the wild geese..... a fish eagle........ the morning mist just lingering, as the river, as smooth as a mirror slides on by.....

Now, that toilet was darn interesting,  only one path in through the bush and viola.... here it was, a magic throne, a simple longdrop toilet, At 02h00 in the orning, I must say, that one felt like one was on a movie set, kinda like the blairwitch project......

Congrats to you all for what looks like a very enjoyable few days at Hohenfels Camp Site.

It's a pity that we were not able to join you as we know how peaceful it is , having camped there a few times many years ago.

It is certainly looking more greener there than what it was.

Glad that you all enjoyed it...............

Wow, you guys are lucky to have such a great camping site away from people, and it looks so clean!  You wont find that in the cities!  Wish I could go with!

A question, if you don't mind.
How cold is the river water? It is still winter here.
The campsite looks amazing. Is it where we used to have Girl Guide camps back in the 70's?

It's coming up for spring, the water was not as warm as it should have been, but was warm enough to swim in....... this area was off limits back in the 70's and 80's, except to a few certain groups...... not sure if the guides went out here....

UP for Mike A and Stennie... Sounds like time well spent; how many parents (& friends) do the outdoor thing so near to home with the kids these days? Ok, not all have what we have just down the road, but still, it's these experiences that make kids appreciate friendships, the outdoors and family life.
Good on ya Mike^2
