The weather was warm and a full moon was present , rising from the east, enlightening the river at night...

Hohenfels? Is that up the river on the Namibia side? When in primary school I was a scout and we went on a scout camp and camped near what look like the ruin of a house photo on this page. The town was still closed and special permission had to be obtained. (sometime 1969 to 1971). I cant remember any in use house like that in one of the pics though.

I wonder if that was Hohenfels? Is it now a camp site or can people just park off anywhere along the river now?

Hi Mike,

Yes, that was Hohenfels that you guys went to, The Voortrekkers also went there and I
heard elsewhere that the Commando's also spent a few camps in the bush here.

The only building there during the time was the old police station up on the hill.

The 2nd building was built around 1988/1990 for the camping club that use to go to
Beauvallon to Camp.

Prior to this, the area was strictly off limits to the average public of Oranjemund.

The mine has returned Hohenfels to the state and the Ministry of Environment and
Tourism not are responsible for the area.

I am led to believe from a source in the Ministry that the tender/concession for
the area has been awarded to an indigenous group in Keetmanshoop who are now looking for outside investors to develop the area.

In the meantime, there are a few locals who still frequent the area to camp in the bush. In a strange way, it shall be sad when the area is developed as currently it still has a wild west feel to it....

Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I didn't know it was an old police station - I was probably 10/11 years old and all I was told was that it was haunted! I suppose one can't stop development but maybe it will help in a little way to keep O'Mund going? Maybe when the Luderitz - O'Mund road is opened a southern Namibia circuit can be developed. Thanks for all your efforts. Mike to Mike
