HOME FOR MY 50th!
« on: August 01, 2015, 09:32:29 AM »
It's been a dream for so long - To visit Oranjemund again.  Then I got the chance, and it was absolutely great, the experience (even if it was only 41 hours long...) left me recharged, happy and totally "whole" again.  It was quite a drive to get to the dunes before the sun set on my 50th Birthday, but we made it with 12 minutes to spare!

In the short visit I managed to see so much and relive so many memories.  It was quite a rush, but also a calming "ritardando" of the melody of my life.

I also got to spend a few minutes with my cuz Marietjie, and had a cold one with Mike and Michele around the kitchen table, sharing experiences from childhood, digging deep to relive life - I was home.

I'll be posting a few pics here of my visit, with some comments in between.

One day I will return, I know this for a fact.  abouttime  bighug

1. The Oppenheimer Bridge from Swartkops.
2. The road towards Sendelingsdrift which they are now tarring.
3. Road to town from Swartkops. Horse Riding club left, "Op my Stoep" Guest house right, and airport in distance.

5. Gemsbok tracks. Just if you missed them...
6. Me in the early desert sun. Yup, I'm home.

10. JJ sitting on a bench on Swartkops Hill.  Now he gets why I keep talking about "home"...
11. Some of the rare plants being protected on Swartkops.  I'm impressed with the effort!
12. Another special little plant being protected on the hill.

Some pics of the school.  I was impressed how clean and tidy the grounds were, and the discipline seemed to be well preserved, with polite youngsters greeting me with respect. SO glad to see.

25. My old Sub A class (Mrs Barnard). No more trellis and rose creeper, now there's aluminium doors and I love the idea of a black board on the wall!
26. The back of the Sub B/Std 1 classes, towards the principal's office, main hall to the right.
27. Between the Sub B/Std1&2 classes. There used to be a pond (where group photos were taken).
28. School Library
29. Here we used to play marbles... bit difficult now with the paving...
30. Netball courts, the benches replaced the old bicycle stand.
31. My old Std5 class. Mr. Berg and Mr. Koch's classrooms.

Home.... E10/11.  No more flowers, ivy or violets and no more Karee with my tree house.  But it's still home.

Thanks for sharing these photos Bertie. I agree with you that no matter how O'mund has changed, it will always be a special place for those of us that were fortunate enough to grow up there. Those memories remain and will always bring a smile to your face and a happy feeling inside you. It will always be home.
