If i get a new computer, i will test all my programms first, if i have problems, i will delete Vista and install my XP
I know many that have done that

Bill Gates wants you to buy all new programms that are compatible, no wonder he is so rich.......... iknow

I dont take part in that money making !!!!

We have PC shops that offer to install Vista or XP for those reasons

But what if you end up not being able to do anything with them unless you have Vista programe, look at when one used to have Betamax (I think it's spelt like that) and the VHS video tape, in the end one had to buy a VHS machine as the Betamax just faded away?

these bladdy companies do it on purpose, hope they loose lots of money with the credit crunch!!!

Never thought that such a simple question would generate so much talk! haha

Anyway, I agree with Georg, Vista is rubbish! Stick with XP, or 98SE (depending on age of your machine).

We'll have to wait and see how Windows 7 shapes up. Initial reports sound promising however, it has DRM built-in! That, to me, doesn't sound good!

Wondering about Ubuntu 8.10 as Canonical sent me a copy of the Server Edition all the way from the Netherlands.

When I bought laptop I insisted upon  XP being installed .. will  wait  many years till  Vista setteld  before even going there ..  so far  latest  versions of XP  work very well with  most programs and  most of the time its stable .. only thing  is I must be careful  with  my  office  word   2007 version  .. if  one  saves a new document as  default  word doc then its only readable on PC   with  the 2007 office installed , so when save I  just change  save option to 97 - 2003 compatibility ..  Viola ..

You are absolutly right

I know all thes format problems, i also had Beta and had to change to VHS
Later it was 8 mm analogue
then 8 mm digital
Then Mini DV
Now HDD
Next will be blueray

Vista and XP

If you buy you get vista also on a cd, so if you have problems you can always kick out XP and install vista.

Some people install more then one operating systems and must select on boot up which one must start.....

In the old win 4.oo you could start Dos or win.

Programms Dos based even run on XP if you use the compatibility aid in the system, however it does not work on all programms

Essentially it depends on what your needs are, i have many needs and watch out

My PC is full with many multimedia applications that i need for Music, Video, Photos.....

All Programms are costly.

VISTA SUX! .... not enough drivers are available for it yet..... XP is the way to go.....

A friend of a worker at the shop, bought a laptop, a cheap one, it came with VISTA installed..... for N$ 4999.00 ...what was the catch, well the vista was a trial version, the poor sod had to pay another grand and a bit to get the full version, the furniture company from whom he bought it, did'nt tell him..... he can't afford that./.... felt sorry for the poor sod.....

SO I promptly formatted his drive and installed a black version of XP..... his laptop is going like a boeing now.....

Tsk Tsk Mike...   :nono1:  Shouldn't admit such things on-line. One of those bots might be Billy Gates checking up on you. I mean after all he, Billy, must be down to his last Billion or so!

@ Mike Stenson

Hi Mike

Are you using Linux? If so, which distro? I've tried a couple of them including Linux 2000, Red Hat and Mandrakes. Linux 2000 was favourite but hardware support was lacking.

As you can see in another post, I now have Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition but it lacks any of the normal packages. Canonical have said they will send me the standard version which includes all the normal office software, Utilities, Games, etc. etc.

If you (or anyone else for that matter) are using Linux I would appreciate your comments and opinions.

Linux is still not an easy install plug n play OS just yet, until it is..... it will continue to lose out to MS(thats Microsoft, not Mike Stenson)

It installs alright but there is always some critical little problem and I have to go back to Windows.
