PLEASE NOTE!

You no longer need a security clearance to visit Oranjemund, the town is now fully opened since the end of last year and it's an absolute pleasure to see tourist types wandering the streets with their camera's trying to photograph the ever dwindling herds of domesticated Gemsboks....

Hi Mike, we are thinking of visiting O'Mund. Do we need anything in addition to passports?

Mike Thurtell

Sorry, forgot to ask, Mike, does your Spar stock everything needed or do we need to bring any provisions (a bit of an old timer question because in my day fresh fruit and veggies was a onc a week affair from the back of a jowwells truck ...)

Hi Mike Thurtell

Oranjemund Spar will have everything you need, including fresh fruit and veggies. And I can say that even though I left there 2 years ago!

Enjoy your visit, my turn comes Easter!

Mike Thurtell

Thanks Nadia. Are you the same Nadia that worked in Appel's magazine department at Uubvlei?

We too are thinking of Easter school holidays. Just dont feel like visa car paper etc forms etc hence my other query.

Cheers

Nada Ulbrich (Rall)(RIP)

Yes, I am!

No visas but safe to take your car papers with you, you are crossing a border and you never know what they needs from you.

...and have a ZA sticker on the back of the car...

There is also a road fund levy on SA cars once you clear the Namibian Customs and Immigration ...

Nada, your house has been vacated again, as we watch Allied Service complete the circle of life and move all their offices back to the Rec Club like it was twenty years ago....

Update on access to Namibia: I am thinking of taking my family on a quick tour of O'mund, Luderitz and Keetmanshoop and back to Cape Town next week. Can someone please confirm that all we need are: (1) Our passports (2) ZA on car (is this really needed?) (3) car papers and (4) fees payable on entrance and return. Many thanks, Mike Thurtell

A passport( with at least 3 months before expiring), Money to pay Namibian Road Tax, Car Papers and a ZA sticker....

When the the whole concept of country stickers came out  more than a decade back they were quite strict about it..... These days it would appear not as I have seen multiple cars without the sticker, so I think the novelty wore off, but one can never say....

No Meat, Poultry or dairy products allowed across the border due to Foot and Mouth disease in SA....

Yep! That's about it....

We did a quick tour of O'Mund - Luderitz-Ais Ais etc earlier this year. Border was painless, roads beautiful, towns without barbed wire fencing or electric fencing quite amazing. No bread to buy in Oranjemund and "restaurant" near border the less said the better. Otherwise we were pleasantly taken aback by O"Mund: Very clean and green and the gemsbok know who'se boss! Unfortunately little info about developments e.g. various housing developments. Maybe some locals will start a Tourism bureau/hokkie one day ... (Just a thought). Rosh Pinah was a pleasant surprise as were the developing tourism facilities between K'Hoop - Canyon - Ais- Ais and Orange River. Fencing has been removed over 100's km and restocking was underway.
