This view of Newlands Cricket ground is very special because...

After decades of viewing live cricket match TV broadcasts and now the recorded highlights from Newlands on BBC TV news at 9pm, the time has come to divulge a secret - I used to have seat at Newlands. A free one with a panoramic view of the entire ground with enough beer to sink a ship!

It happened that my mother' brother Jim, was a senior manager at Ohlssons Brewery and lived on the grounds. So, when the Bruce family drove from Oranjemund to Cape Town for a summer holiday guess where we stayed...? Yes, at uncle Jim's where I had the best holidays a 9-10yr old could ever have watching the Springbok cricket squads training and WP practicing and TVL getting thrashed.

My cousin and I would be perched on the wall separating the brewery from the cricket ground and be in awe of all we saw. To a young wannabe Springbok cricketer, I was in cricket heaven and the memories are still so vivid.

Those were the days before the new stands which now block the views I experienced, were even conceived as a future minuscule probability!

Castle Lager in a Heineken glass. They only serve castle larger on tap, no castle lite at all.
