Rumour has it, that sometime in the 60's the old Xray equipment, that was situated where the police station is today was taken out and dumped in a hole somewhere in the desert, people of the time never fully understood the dangers of dumping old xray equipment just any old place....... this empty piece of the desert has been covered over in later years....and now there are buildings around it...but nobody remembers where this could be...do any of you old timers know something?
Jesus Michael.
This is scary. Are you sure this isn't a Steven King story?
The point is ( and I stress this is just chatter) that the equipment was dumped in a hole.... and only a few people from the 60's knew where... i know of at least 10 people who contracted cancer, most have passed on , and none of them worked in the mine..... but all of them had at one time or another worked in the block of buildings that make up th epost office, magistrate complex...... interesting stuff..... makes you wonder.....
Excuse my ignorance but what would the Post Office,Magistrate building have to do with the buried x-ray equipment.
I did ask about Steven King. I'm sure he knows the conection.
The point of the theory is that (1) Old xray equipment was buried somwhere in town in the 60's...(2) Nobody knows where..(3) a lot of cancer cases occured around the magistrate, cafe, post office complex.....(4) Stephen King never went to school here.....
Put the pieces together people....
laughpoint
Somebody get a geiger counter and scout the area ... surely it would pick up if there is excess radiation in the area ??
It can not be the block that houses the magistrate, post office, butchery since this block was alrady built before the old X-Ray equipment was dumped, unless the post office etc. was moved to some other place i.e after 1965 , after I left CDM.
Good Point Joco, but what was the area around the post office like....what buildings were there?
Thats what I wasn't getting earlier,I don't recall much change in that area since early 1960's
I think the post office, butch and mag has been there a long time I've seen photo's when the post office was the shop you used to give your list of goodies in and they would deliver to your house
The only place in the vicinity of those builings is where the "new" telephone exchange was built - maybe there?
hey Mike the xrays were electrically generated no power no radiation or what
Damn... there goes that theory.... but why would so many residents living in the same area , who do not go on the mine, contract cancer.....?
Got no idea thats the first I hear of it

Mike,
Any old equipment from Town was usually dumped in a few places, In the scrapyards (dumps) behind the Garage, In the reclaim yard (Oranjemund West) where the dredge offices are or in the Loop road scrapyard on the hill to the west of the area where the rubbish is burnt (that was usually vehicles or sensitive equipment)
When the old X-ray equipment was stripped out and replaced with new updated technology, the supplier would most properly have removed the source material. Unless the equipment went to another mine??
The scary thing, Mike , is that during the 70's a nuclear source was removed from some equipment and was on a workbench in the old Central fields workshop, there was one hell of a spin to locate it and get the artisan to be checked out in the Hospital ( I think the source was in some container or other)
An interesting Comment from Gerald Hodgson"
"When the xray machines were removed from the old Police Station in the seventies when the town was declared OPEN, the machines were taken to North Hostel on the mine, by Mr Hennie Van Tonder Plumbing and Fitter Foreman in town - Fitter Dougie Wilson (Scotsman and Soccer Player) and the Plumber workshop staff (Not sure if Mr Ronnie Jew and a Mr Pieterse (not Frans) were part of the helpers .
The unit was set up at North. "
Mike ,i got this from a really reliable source: the machines were given to hospitals in the North, not as in Uubvley North but like in Ovamboland North, besides i never heard of xray Machines in the mine gnite
Do you people still get x-rayed nowadays or are they using a more "friendly" way to look for the odd 50 hidden stones? Meaning something like ultrasound scans .....
Yeah ,somethings will never change apartfrom sex, it is xrays, xrays and more xrays, but the only difference is the technology got better. bling1
Better technology for the x-rays or better for the sex? :emot19:
idontknow - I'm young and innocent!
Are you sure you wanna come and stay here?? with Ronel and Francois and maybe Amor too .? braai quickdop
Adriaan, I also have it from a reliable source, from the people that put it up AT NORTH ( on the mine) ..... SUE speak to Gerald!
Just spoken to my dad,,,He was one of the plumbers who were involved with moving the equipment from the old x-ray department. Dad said the equipment was moved north and quite a few of the old equipment was put into the x-ray department. My Dad with the help of Dougie Wilson moved the big glass x-ray plate and assembled it into the new x-ray department.
Thanks Barbara, everyone is on about North, are we talking about the North of Namibia or the area on the mine, referred to as North?
the area on the mine, ref to as north.
Adriaan - the question is - are you sure you guys want me to stay there. You and your house might never be the same again afterwards!
Nice to hear that Amor might also be there.
NO !!!!!!!! :emot172: yesno bling1
Mike if you find the old xray equipment, I am looking for some electronic spares.
