Another memory jerker from Sue Hodgson, cheerleading in the 70's....
oh wow, we have photos at home of myself and Rhona all dressed in our red gear, must've been heading of to cheer on the crowds :yeah3:
If I'm not mistaken, those cheerleaders are Katia Lotte (my little sister) and Stephanie Griffith-Richards.
Mike in the photo; is that you with your back to the fence and your arms hanging over - in the blue sweater and shorts; beside the two little blondes?
@Rhona, I cannot tell, although I doubt it....me being Green and all, although I can see a slight resemblence
I too see a slight resemblence - as I do with the 2 blonde girls................is it possibly us!!!
I can't tell.... but check the kid on the bottom right of the Corner, stuck in the fence, maybe Koos?
idontknow
haa haa haa..............is that you Koos?
i was looking at that chid and wondered if he actually got stuck the gaps in the fence are quite small idontknow
Why did the PT shorts have that white stripe down the side? Did it make us run faster?
Yeah, they were go faster stripe - same as when you got new trainers, no could run as fast as you then!!!
You mean they were racing stripes.... the big takkie brand was addidas... and those sanyo tracksuits...... what were those white takkies called, with the yellow/beige soles and the green stripe that went around the takkie...they had two small holes on the arch to let the air flow through.... and they were cheap....but they lasted for a decade.... not like todays tosh!
Everything we had lasted an age...........even if you wanted the damn things to wear out so you could get something new - they haunted you like a curse........
I hated wearing those new School shoes, the black ones, that leather bit into your heels like a dog stuck to your leg.... plasters did'nt help......
Spent most of our time out of shoes - even when we first moved to Ireland, stayed in our feet as much as possible..........I'm sure people thought we were either strange or more than likely they thought we were the poor kids from Africa..........even now when I arrive home from work I prefer kicking my shoes off and just going about in my socks........
Rhodes was the only team to be in
Rhodes, Schmodes... who in their right mind wants to be in a team with a red colour?
EVERYBODY wants to wear a red colour...............
SORRY!!!!! but green suits me better up Banardos
Oh When The Green, Oh When The Green, Oh When the green house come marching in.... watch the others cry with envy, when the green house comes marching in.... lalalalala
As the red team took off into the desert; the runners would turn around and sing ''Cherio cherio cherio'' as the green guys would be left in a cloud of sandy dust.............
Michael that song brings back memories, I forgot all the songs we used to sing. Anyone remember any othere
"Come what may we , believe in Barnato!....lalalal"... to the tune of that song from DR Zchivago
We were just showing the color of our hearts. Yes! Now you know! That's what we did.
Green? Blue? Yiegh! What's that supposed to be?
Rhodes used to win at all the sporting events....what else can say we were the best
Yes Clint. Tellem! ALL Events. Every single one.
R for Rhodes we sing this song
H is how we go along
O for Operheimer blue
D for danger this is true
E for excellence you see
S the songs we sing with glee

And we will win the cup to day ay ay ay

Ellen was cheerleader of Oppenheimer for many years, she convinced me to join her and we were cheerleaders together in 1974 and 1975. If I remember correctly, we got the cheerleading cup both years. Had slides printed and scanned, not sure they will come out alright, but here goes.
and more...
and more.....
and just so that Rhodes and Barnato don't feel left out ....
Lekker Pics Florrie, real memory jerkers...
Kyk die Groen daar op die baan...
Hulle slaan vir almal bang,
Groen Huis is die beste span..
Groen Huis altyd, Bo, Ya,Bo!
lalalallallaa!
numberone
Flipping hell, must have Alzheimers. I was a cheerleader for two years but can't remember the songs. Know there was one to the tune of 'Michael row your boat ashore', but can't think of the words.
Well done Florence my girl,we may not have won much, but we were the bestest.
OPPENHEIMER
Awesome photos ... got butterflies in my stomach just remembering the atmosphere on those days. Have to admit that the OPS cheerleaders (be they Rhosed, Oppenheimer or Barnato) were great. They could teach the US cheerleaders a thing or two.
I remember Mrs. Coffin always being up front teach us the songs. Practicing after school in the assembly hall. Some of us didn't realy like going there. She tried getting me to be chearleader, but I suppose I was to shy in those days. Don't think anybody would believe that today... laughpoint
I remember later on as the days progressed, the Cheerleaders would swap places and red would do green and green would do blue etc....
:emot172: :emot172: :emot172: :emot172: Rhodes was still the best,take that
Clint, I think we've got them outnumbered anyhow.
bling1
It's sad that the school no longer goes the extra mile with the cheerleading thing, I noticed at the Gala this year, that there was no real definition between the teams.....
We Got Spirit,
Yes We Do,
We Got Spirit,
How About You.....?
