Title: Scripture Union 1973
Post by: Michael Alexander on February 28, 2008, 06:14:59 AM
Here another pic taken at the Cricket club from 1973 of the Scripture Union. A holiday club in Omund? Who knows more?

Thanks to Sue Hodgson for the pic!

I remember that. I think I went once or twice. Even remember that the guy in charge was pretty cute. They just kept us busy doig arts & crafts, signing and trying to convince us that religion was the only way out  iknow

1973 was our first year, so I mist this one. But I remember the religion thing too.
I remember we did some quiz or something. You could win sweet. They would try to bribe you for "sugas" sweets for eg. There was this big guy calling "sugas, take the "sugas". First 10, then 20 and so on...
We loved it. Don't think any kid would be excited about 10 sugas today. But that's life. It's what our parents kept saying too.

I was involved assisting SU in O'mund, as were quite a few other teenagers who had links to local churches (e.g. Lesley Davies girl whose father was the Methodist Minister and involved in the camera club - who can ever forget his cinereels of the bees and the other one of the Sleepers - subsequently saw Rev Davies on the border a few years later at a miserable place in Kaokoveld near the river. Lesley wrote to me a few times at boarding school anbd sent me a dear john letter which was quite novel because I didnt even know that we were an item). The place was called called Sodiliet after a little sodilite mine/quarry. That pretty muck knocked the ego out of most of the troopies who discovered the legacy of the trekkers, the black van der Merwes.

Anyway back to the SU camps - the SU people were drawn from churches in the Cape and the mission was to save souls - a dismal failure. They basically thought O'munders (adults and kids) were spoilt. O'munders on the other hand thought this was wonderful free daycare. Each year the SU went back home and involved their congregations in prayer for O'munders.

SU people used to stay in the homes of O'munders and CDM lent beds.

Regards

I remember going to those SU thingies as a kid.  Can you believe it, SU's still going strong - my daughter went on a SU camp out Simonstown way over these past December hols.  She loved it!

I'm not surprised they came back to CT and prayed for us after seeing what we normally got up to - not even high school principals wanted to accept O'mund kids at one stage, must've been something in the water.............we were doomed from the start....... quickdop

SU was a big thing in my time. They would normally arrive in the school holidays and try to keep us occupied with all sorts of activities. My favourite was the scavenger hunt. You would be given a list of 10 items and sent off. The first person back with all 10 items won.
