Title: Coming Into Town!

Place of the hill, the main entrance into town, with all the signs...

Not quite like I remember it as you can imagine - it was just a made-up road and desert - but this is fascinating.  Being a closed town in those days there were no signs of welcome.  They were great cycle rides though - right on the limits of where we could go.

Those limits are still in place, a big great fence around the town , and on the east you may not go past the telephone poles....

Hi,

Does anybody remember the time that Bossie Bosman, the speedcop, rolled his car on this hill ? I cant remember exactly when it was, probably in the late 70's early 80's. My dad told us that they nicknamed him "weedeater" after this incident.

Carl.

I don't remember it, but I was always amazed as a kid at how much the "law" in Omund could drink.....

He he he    -   ja, you would know!   Ag, how I remember those days when the "wheel alignment" of the Volla and later the Cruiser was always 'out'   -  you know, those zig-zag trips when Big Dirk took other people home when he thought it was not safe for them to drive!

Bossie's son, Francois lives in Dubai. I bumped into him about 2 years ago on the softball field. First time I met anyone from Oranjemund here. Not sure if he still lives here though, but when I mentioned his name to my parents, they both remembered his dad well. My mom remembers the day she was riding her bicycle in town (which was quite a sight considering her cycling abilities, or rather the lack thereof ...), and Bossie pulled her over for a chat. It was only when my mom's front tyre stopped between Bossie's legs (eina ...) that he realised that she didn't know how to use her brakes ... don't think her ever stopped another woman that way again  image201

Francois (Bossie (junior)for short, and me were best buddies. He has moved and now lives in Abu Dabi and I have informed him of this website. Hope he will join soon. Speedcop Bossie lives in Port Owen and till a year or 2 ago he was still the local traffic cop for Laaiplek/Veldrif.
