Just a quick snap this morning of the Salt Pan,
Is there still a Pink Pan. I think at one stage the Yacht Club was called the Pink Pan but, then with all the boats, it lost its pinkness and there was another small lake next to it which was quite Pink.
Yes Ann, The Pink Pan was the Yacht club pan( Long since lost it's pinkness), The salt pan is the one in the photo, which lies between the old dumps and the CDM airport...
The yacht club was officiall called the Cormorant Yacht Club. The picture is one of the three Andy's that dad built in the double garage across the road from 21 - 1st Avenue. This was Whiterose. Must have the record for never winning a race!!
In the background of the photo is Mr Mead's blue bakery truck. He was an avid sailor. Loved it he did.
The Pink Pan was just that - a shallow soakaway about 100yds away from the CYC. The shallow water allowed the salty water to crystalize and form a salt crust. As a kid I used to see how many times I could walk kaalvoet across the crust with its razor sharp crystals. Ouch, ouch, ouch..... :)
Only now do I appreciate the damage I was doing to it. As a certain celebrity in UK , Namely him of Top Gear fame, Mr " I am so rude" Jeremy Clarkson, found out when he was charged with desicrating a natural wonder in USA by driving a car across a salt pan.
It takes 10 - 20 years for the tyre marks to be covered over by new crystal growth.
Ooops! :o
It's still called The Cormorant Yacht Club, I;ll take a pic of the sign, next time I'm there.....
:)
