All I  remember was the story of Mrs Whatley .. a  new  dominee had arrived in town .. the Whatleys were one of those   english/ afrikaans families both languages being spoken fluently in the home .. One of  the aunties from the church was going from door to door making  collection to fill   the  new  dominees  pantry etc etc .. upon knocking at the Whatleys door she got short  shrift  form  Mrs Whatley who sent her on her way  with  the  comment  "Hy is  'n gewone mens net  soos  ons , en  ons  moes  ons  eie spens volmaak  toe  ons hier gekom  het , hy  kan  maar  die  seflde  doen"  I  recall  a  revernd Mc Crystal ( under  correction  here  on  name  and  think  he  was  methodist ) he stayed in 3rd avenue .. used to  hold  these  slide shows at his  home  to  discourage  drug  use  among  the  teens ...  the  one  song  played to  images of  goulish looking  drug  raddled  creatures  was  '  puff the  magic  dragon '  not  that  we  took  too much  notice ...

idontknow  where the dominee lived.  I was a good girl   :ciupa1:   -  so I did'nt need to go to his house for a repremanding about my sins.    shooter

:emot19_2:  Some or other joker called the police chaplan in Keetmanshoop when I was stationed there - told him to speak to me about my drinking habbits (apparently I had finished a bottle of red wine all by myself, that I bribed off the diaken bloke who came to collect money for the church, and I never offered a sip to anyone else).  Told the dominee he could come see me at my house, but he must remember to bring a bottle of wine with, so we can discuss the problem.  Still waiting for him to show.

Yes Sandy I remember that methodist minister and "Puff the Magic Dragon", he had a show at the Watson's house (Peter, Bernadene and Shirley Watson) in the 70s.

"Puff the Magic Gragon" in those days was a childs song, a name for a gun ship that the yanks used in th Vietnam war to rain hell fire down on the vietcong and a heroin pipe used by the yank soldiers to get out of the bad reality of the vietnam war. Therefore "Puff the Magic Dragon" was seen as drug related in the 70s.

Yes Diana the dominees in the 70s stayed in 11th - was there not a case of a dominee being transfered because of a ladies department incident?

I don't know about this underwear incident, but I do know that the domoni lived next door to us in 4th avenue
he had some parties/braai's were the squeezebox and loud afrikaans songs not church hymns were played late into the night.
His wife would allows send a plate of warm delicious koeksisters to our house when she was cooking them.
My father was a self confessed atheist so they never spoke to one another, but I liked the koeksisters and would be gracious to the whole family at all times.

I don't know about the ladies department story, but I do know that one of the dominees - who also was a police reserve at that time - had and affair on with one the 'ouderling's' wife.  They got caught out (apparently at the log cabin).  He got transferred and his wife also divorced him.  Don't know if the ouderling and his wife stayed together after that.

(I am not going to mention names here  -  sorry!)

History repeats .. people like auntie Elsie , if  we  needed  to  know  something we  just ask them .. i  remember so  many  times  trying  to  recall  a  story ,, just  get  on  the  phone to Mom and  get  the  gen  . one  night I  phoned  her to  ask what  a  ginger  square  was ( there was a  bit  of a debate ) .. answer  got .. sadly  we  lose  the  older  generation , parents  aunts uncles as  the  years  wear  on , but  then  strangely we  find ourselves in  the  same  role  , giving  answers and  information , telling  stories  to  the  next  generation .. good  thing about this  site is that if  everyone  registered could  do  a  bit  of  recall and  a  few  pictures  we  would  ahve  a real bit of  history  that  would  not  disapear  as  lives come  to  their  end , all preserved in  cyberspace and hopefully  hardcopied  somewhere ......

Now this could become a very interesting story:

" ... the dominee heard bells ringing away from the tower, whilst engaged in the act of commiting the ultimate sin of adultry, but he paid no attention and continued.  When thirst overcame him, he sipped slowly from his glass, filled with a ginger square, for he was a man of the church and was not allowed to consume beverages that could cause him to become intoxicated.  His fettish for ladies underwear was..."

:  a story indeed my friends.

as a child i would often pour the after dinner ginger square drinks for my folks, i was required to pour brandy into the glass to the level of the first leaves on the cut crystal and top it up with ginger ale.
i was not partial to the taste of ginger ale and discovered that when mixed with the brandy it tasted better, so would slurp up a portion of the drink to enable me to empty the ginger ale into the glass.
my folks always believed i drank the remaining plain ginger ale from the bottle.
haha, have never ordered one for myself, as an adult preferring to keep the taste in my childhood.
I did reveal the truth to my mother some years ago she was very amused but surprised.

re dominee's house. at first the dominee's stayed somewhere around 7 th ave. The town was still a closed area at the time . They drove around in a car owened by the church [a biscuit coulored Peogot car ] . around 1979 the pastorate was relocated to 4th ave .

re the affection toward youngsters by the reverant . maybe the following incedent lead to the assumption that there was more to their motives than just a training session .
The Priest , or it could be the Reverant , together with the Sjeff gave swimming lessons at the pool , but very soon the mothers expressed concern about the methods by the instructor , the "show how to " , the holding and touching of the yougsters was inappropriate according to the mothers  .the lessons stopped soon afterwards

Seems like this affection for youngsters pops up every where.  In the past 3 years 2 dominees have been transferred from Kathu due to stuff like that.

I don't know what's happening to the church and it's rules, but stuff like this make me believe that the main puppets in the organization turn a blind eye to these issues and try to hide it by making sorry excuses for stuff done wrong in the past.  My question :  is it acceptable then to have a dominee who does things like these?  NO  -  but when someone wants to bring it into the open, it is always covered up by the other dominees with lots of excuses.

I think a lot of men became priests because they couldn't form proper relationships but then the urge just got too much and they couldn't control themselves and being in the trusted position they were, found it easy to hide their quirks.

Gun ??  .. In  the  army  those  sadistic instructors  would  make  us if  we  accidentally called our  rifle  a  gun  stand in  front of the  squad  .. we  had  to  recite  and  do  these  actions ..  hold rifle  up  and  say " this  is  my  rifle " and  then  grab  your  crotch  and  say "  and this  is my  gun "  hold rifle  up again  and say " this  is  for  shooting "  back to  the  crotch clutch  and  say  " and  this  is  for  fun "... some guys  just kept on doing the same  mistake .. maybe  they  ahd  a thing  for  crotch exhibitionism ??
