Guy Fawkes night (5th November) I remember Dad nailing Catherine Wheels on the fence and us kids waiting and waiting for them to start turning. Also remember the penny bungers, rockets and sparklers. We loved Guy Fawkes night as it culminated in a braai. Dad was a champion at cooking the braai. When Mum and Dad went to others' places for a braai Mum would always make sure it was Dad who cooked her meat as no one else cooked it as well as Dad did!
Also remember the Ford Anglias which we call 'hire cars'. Still get a jolt when I see one or a picture of one as it instantly takes me back to Oranjemund.
Oh yes, real memory lane car. I have also always associated the Anglia with O'mund.
The Anglias must have been before my time, coz I remember we could rent VW Beetles
What era where the Peugot's from, those one's that rise when you drive them?
I remember the Anglias very well plus also the Zephyr (spelling?) that we used to get when we went on holidays. I remember sitting in the back while Mum or Nana cut up fruit for us then me throwing up all over the place! I don't know how we survived the days before airconditioning in cars!
When you say you went on holiday, where did you go to? I know most people went to Cape Town, WHere did the tar road start?
I remember going to East London, Cape Town, Durban. Not sure where the tar road started.... I was too busy trying to aim for the sickbag! My memories are a little vague as I was quite young. Mel? Do you remember?
You can drive to Cape TOwn in just over 7 hours these days, I was wondering what the average time must have been in those days, and I guess everyone stopped at Clanwilliam dam to fill up.....!
I think it used to take about10 hours but that could have just been my dad having to stop all the time to klap 5 fighting kids! I do remember once going to CT on an off-weekend with friends and having to reverse up some of the Port Nolloth road because of the mud after rain - bizarre! we'd do anything to get to CT!
It was Citroens Mike ... under topic my first car , I had one , and old ID 19 it was a 1963 model .. they were made from I think the late 50's right through to the 70's sometime
Thanks Sandy, I just remember Gilber Kermis mentioning that they were designated company cars at one time in the past, you know the french Connection that Gilbert see's in things.....
Nope Peugot 404 was the designated company car .. it was called the sugar coated pill in its one advert .. Citroens werew never on the company car list ..
In that case , I have the two cars confused..... both french cars then?
Did a quick MSN search .. for citroen ID 19 ... and then for peogot 404.. do it you will see the difference .. Yes both french ..
Ok... I got them now....
I only remember the LIssers having a Citroen, we used to call it the Shark car.
aah ! such good memories .. my baby .. i cried when I parted with my ID 19 ... felt as tough I was betraying her when i sold her .. but with 120 000 miles on the clock it was tempremental .. did you read under the topic my first car i ever owned ??
@ Diana http://www.oranjemundonline.com/Forum/index.php?topic=339.0topic the first car i owned .. there is a picture ..
Got it Sandy. AND check out the cool dude pose. :sorriso2:
tar road started just before the road joined the N7, at kolmanskop I think ? We would have a count down to hitting the tar and all clap, no more dust and rattling
We always stopped at Bitterfontein I think, it was closer to the main road.
It generally took 12 ish hours, but we were travelling during the years of fuel restriction.
The petrol stations were closed early, and the speed limit was very much enforced, we even had a spped control button in the car, my mom was the speed freak, and we had to wait for dad to doze off.
Of course if you broke down - you'd wait hours, and then if it was over lunch time - no help until 2pm in Springbok.

Thats the Citroen you talking about. The first of the type already in the 60th.
DS 19 DS 21 or so
Most modern car of its time, could drive with 3 wheels and very comfy.....
@ Barbara. The tar road which was the N7 started at Steinkopf, where those dome shape houses were, just as you turned right onto the N7 , a little way down was a Teeny weeny garage and shop on the left. We also had that speed control thingy thought we were so larney. I can tell you where the loo is in every single town on the way to Cape Town,as you say besides stopping to klap 5 kids,my poor dad had to contend with me wanting to wee evry 5min.
Hahaha, i know what you mean.
I can still tell you were all the loo's are in area I spend enough time in.
