It was really great to speak and view George Ruff and Bobby Smith on Skype. We had a German / English conference call with me in Cape Town, George in Germany and Bobby in England. And the common language was Afrikaans!!!!!!!!
Post your Skype details so we can all log in and chat online.

Hi Mike. What does the fk stand for? Is it something in Afrikaans. You know I'm learning. Remember kyk?
Ours is just called Telekom.
fok telkom.....
Bertie, sorry if Stennie and I were a bit loud when we Skyped last night..... it was a good braai...once again......
my nickname on skype is mortymoose1 , when I'm online...
a BIT loud...........I heard you in the Emerald Isle, what a pair of hooligans!
Hahahaha then we phoned Malcolm (Goofy) and recollect old Dieter Heiser in between.... ask Malcolm about the foot incident...... laughpoint
Malcom said you were to tell us about the foot incident? Or should we be scared?
@ Mike - No, you weren't loud at all. Sounded like a great get-together! I was a bit jealous, though. Yes I saw your nickname, wont ask where that came from! I found you by typing your name in the search box - found whole page of Michael Alexanders, but fortunately only one from Namibia, and when I clicked on it, you were there immediately. Amazing, no ringing, nothing!
@ Georg - dont let them teach you anymore! You're being taught all the wrong words once again! gnite
And fok is Afrikaans for fork? But what's fork got o do with phoning?
No Georg Jr, fok is not Afrikaans for fork, it's Afrikaans for F-ck, they are teaching you ugly words.

Geez! I should be carefull. I'm glad my kids aren't on the board.

Rhona! Are you not allowed to install it?
Ah Robert - I'm a big girl now and am sure I'd be allowed if I asked nicely...........still contemplating the whole thing; sounds kinda cool - but then you'd have lunatics like those 2 Mikeys calling you after a braai..........but, I think it'd be good...........I might ask somebody, some day to help me - but right now BierSuip
Dad Georg managed to call me on Skype this afternoon. My settings this side isn't 100%, so I can't use it to its full potential, but boy, did we have a nice chat! We talked for 40 min 10 sec's!
Just for everybody who hasn't heard Dad Georg speak - he has the most calming voice! Well, he actually said he's usually told his voice is "sexy", more than calming! He-he.
Thank you for the nice chat, I could see through your posts you are a wonderful person, and hearing you "real-time" confirmed that! I'll get someone to look at my settings, and we'll chat again I'm sure!
I still can't get over the fact that the call was free!?!?!?!?!?!? Are you sure I wont be billed by some special unit of some obscure internet phone company?
beautiful
@ Bertie
Its definitly free unless you want to give donations LOL
That function is not only available with skype
I can Talk and send Picture/Video via AIM, MSN, Win Mess, Win Live, and yahoo ( not tried yet)
All Free !!!!!
I have checked on profiles, few people indicate where to contact apart from mail
Check my profile and you see what i mean
Hi Mike....thanx for the offer to help me get on skype......but my reason for not getting on there.....although i said i would try find the cam ect ect ect......some of it was a little fib......dont think you can help with the real reason i havent connected yet.......cant people see you....if so doesnt that mean i would have to make sure i look ok before loggin on :emot19: cant see it happening !!!!!!!! can i just see all you without you seeing me????
Hi Bev
When you are in skype you can
1) Type messages withouth a mike and cam
2) Speak without a picture on
3) Type, speak, and transmit video
You can switch of sound and or cam as you are pleased
I have lots of chats without the cam on, it runs better like that
Happy now ????
So get on Skype !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for message typing and or talking, once you have powdered your nose, you can alo use the cam
@ Bv
I must add:
Use a head set, that prevents echo
Mike for example leaves the speaker on loud, sometimes it is impossible to chat with him
Also , give your counterpart time to finish his sentence, then talk.
I requires a little discipline
Any Questions? we skype users will be glad to help
I spoke today to Bertie, excellent connection, with Nam it could have problems sometimes
Gee! Georgswa, I feel like a rude Skyper now...... notfair
One warning on Skype. If you have an internet contract with a limited Gb bundle, stay away from the webcam. While u'r chatting away, the webcam is busy uploading your image to the other party and downloading theirs. This eats away your limited bandwidth at an alarming rate.
Thats a very valid point Carl, a lot of people in Africa think that they will never reach the cap limit on their contract, nect thing you know you are getting a huge billl for going past the limit.... Blerrie African Telecoms.... image21
Hellcom is still ok, they cut you off when you reach your limit. Vodacom on the other hand lets you carry on regardless, but charges you "out of bundle rates" of R2 for every Mb that exceeds your limit. Like you say, the big surprise comes end of the month when you get your bill. I once paid R104 for a 47mb download.
Thanx for the warning about webcam, Carl!

Gee! Georgswa, I feel like a rude Skyper now...... notfair
No not rude, but i told you on occasions about the echo
You are in the advantage listening to me since i use a head phone, that means you dont hear a echo.
If you speak when i have a speaker on, ( which i have not) you would hear youreself as an echo
This also happens when your mike is to close to the speaker, or if speaker is to loud.
Thats all i am saying.
In addition , the slow Nam system adds to that problem.
I use single line ISDN, at home and we surf a lot... really a lot.... with the odd 2 hour SKype webcam enabled session...and our bill pans out at about R700.00 a month.... not to shabby, I would say...
:emot78: For R360 in SA you could have gotten ADSL 384 with a 2Gb cap. Only catch is the two year contract with Hellcom.
... and that what I'm waiting for up here...... ADSL 2gb at home should be enough for us.... 3_8_14
I've had the undermentioned package for about 6 month now, and it meets my needs for now. In the beginning we had to buy "topup" after the first week as the wife went download bef*k with the new toy...
My laaities were not much better. The youngest one came to me one day and wanted my credit card number. He had clicked on one of those "congratulations you are the millionth visitor" popups and wanted my card number to claim his "prize". image14
My internt costs are divided
Acces is via Telcom cost about 17 €/month basic
My provider is AOL i can choose different tarifs
Use at the moment speed of 1,000 Mbits and unlimited time and traffic with mailing capacity of 2 GB
That cost about 10 € / Month
So total is 28 €
I also have a programm installed that shows me up and download Mbits of traffic.
Just typing in a board is little traffic
Talking is more up and down
Camera increases that
Confernce calls: If more then 2 are present only the avatar is seen, no video transmission
We had a treesome last night, Nam, Brit, Ger, worked fine
Dont know the limit how many can connect simultanious
Important on normal converation and even more on conference is strikt discipline on who talks.
Pausing and waiting for the next to talk helps !!!!
Try it, its fun !!!
i will now search Carl wrbka, lets see !
I hate using the earphones, I feel that I might as well just pick up the phone and phone the person then, often when the speaker is on, Michele or somebody will also be listening to the conversation.... 3_8_14
That is ok mike if you dont place the mike near the speaker and dont turn the boxes up to loud
Just ask you partner on the line how it sounds, if he hears his echo, you must react as i say
Fair enough.... i gotta get a better Mike anyway.... this one, as you said, is too close to the speakers....
@ Carl Wrbka
Searched on skype, dont find you
Tried name and email adress
Got a nick ??? If yes put it in your profile and so should others too
You're confusing me. Mike wants a new Mike 'cos his Mike is too close, but he wants a better Mike. Hey are u cloned Mike?
bravo U gotta it Bertie... you got it!
Then just lean back Mike, or put the speakers further away.

I'm not on Skype yet Snr. I set it up for the oldest laaitie to chat to his girlfriend in Qatar.
Ken and Maggie Dixon - k.g.dixon
Not even going to try get him to use a board but have just set his skype up
Jay, is that with a camera for the old man?
No mike no camera at the moment will get one in slaap stad and send it up!
I reckon your old man will be utterly gobsmacked to see skype in action with a cam.....
Mike he has just learnt about e-mail he used to write letters all over the word on his type writier. One small step at a time!
@ Jeremy - I know exactly what you mean. My Dad also just able to read e-mails now. Still a problem forwarding and replying, though. Not to mention the cell phone. I gave them a cell, and wrote everything down in their language about operating it. When I got to them 2 weeks later, the phone had more than R600 of airtime on it - they kept feeding it vouchers because they were scared it would die! idontknow
:emot19: That's so funny!
Everty tim I go to Plett to visit my mom; I have to sort out her PC and she has piles and piles of articles on how to do stuff that she never reads! But in her defence, she knew how to MMS before I did.
I will open up on this one .. I spend lots of time talking to people over the phone every day in the course of my business dealings .. customers , potential customers , suppliers , our reps with enquiries .. at the end of the day i am " phone fatigued " for me its a relief to actualy not have to use the phone .. but the i still have to .. I run 24 /5 or 24/7 operation .. so I still ahve to be on the phone .. more "Phone fatigue" sure I'm gonna get cancer in my left ear from my portie at work and my cellphone .. so skype .. right now just does not do it for me .. i talk so much during the day to the point I am irritated if my home fone goes off ... to just chill and write is fun .. I only talk on the phone and occasionaly to friends and those that I have face contact with every so now and again ... so skype .. more talking .. for now not an option .. I have " allowed" internet into my private time after much deliberation .. and found it fun .. but yes distracting pulling me from other sometimes important things I have to deal with .. Oh shyt i'm wrting in riddles .. but thats where its at ...
Ha ! Eddie phoned me and asked me if I could help him with his first cellphone .. he got one of those diabolical early erricksons circa 2001 .. bad menu .. anyhow i discovered that he always kept it switched off cos he thought that when it was switched on it used up airtime ?? I had to explain carefully that it was only when he made calls that it used up airtime .. that considering that he had been on internet for years before ? quirky hey ??
Ha... Sandy, I am one of those paranoid bastards who hates using a cellphone..... I believe it will give you cancer or something one day...(whoooo! What a nutter!, I hear them pointing and laughing)... however, if I speak on a cellphone for longer than 30 seconds, I start to get headaches that last for 4 hours after........... I still carry a cellphone, for shop alarms..... but I seldom seldom ever use it to communicate with..... in fact most times it is off...... for this reason am still using the old Nokia 3310, when everyone around me has upgraded to the latest job....... The guys at work all laugh at me...... but at least my hair has not turned gray yet...... quickdop
The 3310 .. workhorse .. I have great respect for that model .. simple menu .. nice big buttons .. solid .. and there are many still working to this day .. their cases shiny from use , testimony to their toughness .. got one as a loan fone last year while my new 5500 had to go in for second time to have its rubber face fitted again .. It was like meeting an old friend again..
Here we go Mike
oops not sure what happened there, will send via PM
Oh poo, the picture won't open...but you get the jest of it idontknow
