Title: The Ground beneath our Feet!
Post by: Michael Alexander on April 18, 2008, 08:21:19 AM
There are currently 40 plots of land being serviced to the west of town for private people to but up home. We were debating today that the when the holes are being dug, up comes all those boulders and rocks, similar to the stuff that is at the Gun Club. Now if we look at old photo's of town, 1948...all you see is soft sand...if you go to the east of town, when the town ends, there is no rocks and boulders just pure sand...now you cannot built on that sand....so where did all that rocks and stones come from...to all you old timers..were the rocks here already, was it put there...and is it conglomerate......?

idontknow

Somehow the wreck got into the sand too. Maybe it's some kind of stonehenge....  :emot19:

I  go  on  memory  .. but  our  house  in  2nd  avenue  ..  yes  there  was  a  sand  layer  but  a bit  further  down  it  was  a  mix of clayey material  and  boulders .. hard  to  dig  into ..  also   a  lot  of  the trenches  in  the  town  in  the  late  50s and  early  60s  where also  a  case  of  a  sand  layer  and  then  a  mix of boulders  and  clay  type  material ...

I think that the sand was a top layer rather than down deep through moving dunes, etc.  Also Omd being close to the river, it is probably more alluvial ground than anything below the sand layer.

Anyone remember the loads of stones that used to get dumped outside your fence to pretty up the verges.  Remmer sitting there licking stones as kids looking for agates, etc and my mom warning us that we would get fleas and dogs weed on the stones.  Paid no attention of course!
