Title: The Alley!
Post by: Michael Alexander on July 24, 2007, 01:43:37 PM
A new trend for the last 10 years in Omund, is to block up the alley's, I'm not to sure, but somebody did say it was to prevent people from urinating in them and to prevent them being used as a springboard to break into peoples houses...

But aren't they still an integral part of the town?

You would think so... fuel prices up and up, the place is small enough to walk everywhere. Besides the company has stopped the old bus route around town. The bus goes from PCC up 8th Ave to 6th Str and then left down 9th Ave and back to mine road past the swimming pool.
There are so many cars in this town now, it's unreal, even taxis (that own the road).

Hi,

What a Godsend those alleys were. My personal best time from 55-1st Avenue to school was 13 minutes!

Carl.

Carl, did you leap over the poles on the alley or go around them? I leaped over the ones.... E7-1st all the way to the park...in about 3 minutes...something...these days I'd just have to run straight through those poles....   faceinfood

I was a good little kid and went around the poles. If you can remember, I was rather chubby at the time and would have probably got stuck...

I remember the alley near my house at 53 1st Ave very well.  I didn't get my reading card signed by my parents one day and was so scared of facing Mrs Castle that I wagged school at the tender age of 7 and just sat in the alley all morning until I thought it was roughly going home from school time.  Petrus, our boy looked a little shocked to see me home from school so early  but never ever questioned me.  I never wagged school since then I'm pleased to say.

I had numerous encounters with Gemsbokke standing in he allies early in the mornings when walking to school (winter time so it was really dark)...don't know who got the biggest fright myself or the poor bokkie...same thing with Garry du Toit, he came walking to the bus stop in 13th ave and me on my way to school.  We had bumped into eachother and screeming like girls, only to realise who and what it was. image201

When I lived in O'Mund 40 yrs ago - we did not know what a break-in was. Keys were left in the ignitions of cars( they were company cars - all Landies), bicycles left in the front yard.
