I just realized this morning when I got dressed that I am wearing slacks that are 21ys old. And I have to mention that they still are very fashionable and still looks as if I had bought them just yesterday.
Next moment I realized that most of the modern clothes in my cupboard does not last more than 2 years. How clever do these people in the marketing industry get. Make material that do not last, so you have to buy new clothes every season. I think the main reason that my clothes do last "longer" is due to the fact that I tend to my own laundry.
Also still have some sheets that I used when I was at boarding school. A little faded, but still very usable. The same with an eiderdown my mother bought for me when we were still living in O/Mund. The material is getting a little worn now, but I think I will just re-cover it and it will still last another 25 years.
The electrical frying pan, slow coocker, casserole and lots of other stuff that I am still using also exceeds the age of 21. Damn, they made them to last a liftime back in those days.
Anyone else also got some stuff like that?
It's that way with most products.
Yes, "clever".
@Dalene So true, Untill 2yrs ago I was still using the "Indersit Auto" washing machine that we bought in the shopping centre when we first got married, that would have made it 30yrs.(Was never repaired).I also have a wonderful grater that was bought there by Mrs Young that I'm still using (40yrs)its a metal contraption with different blades, you push the cheese down with a plunger type thing and turn the handle. Anybody remember those copper non-stick cooking pots that were black inside (all the rage in the 7o's) got my set as a wedding present (32yrs) still using them, still the best I had others but keep going back to them.
Diana, yes, I remember those copper pots. My mom also had some of them. The black all scraped off on the inside, but still used them. My mom also had a similar washing machine that she used untill she went to the old age home. Remember those mini electrical roasters you got? Had a sort of hood thing on top with a small tray you inserted beneath it and a small grid that fitted onto the pan - you could roast about 2 chops on it or a roll of sausage. I am still using the one my dad bought in OM shopping centre to fry sausage when not having a braai outside.
My casserole was also bought in the shopping centre in OM with the money I earned from working during the holidays. My goodness, now that I think of it, I also still have 2 coffee mugs left of the 6 that I had bought way back then.
Jissie, keep those memories coming about all the stuff from way back then that are still in use. I sommer get excited all over again!
You've realy got me thinking about the stuff in my house now.
My mom also has one of those braai thingys.
Yes the black has also come off the inside of my pots, but they still cook the best even though not non-stick anymore.
Another thing I've just remembered my pressure cooker (Brown with Vegies printed on the sides) another wedding present still in use.
Must log off now its nearly time for my "POWER OUTAGE" 10 -12
@ Diana .. The grater .. 3 legs .. is it a moulinex ? Mom had the whole moulinex range .. including a herb shredder .. still got the brown mixing bowl that my Mom gave me yonks ago .. the old columbus polisher .. solid as hell .. only had to replace the bearings on the motor so far .. and of course the polishing brushes .. cast iron cookwear ... midwinter stonewear plates and coffee cups .. handles came loose and I had to glue them on again , but still going .. people marvel at these coffee cups ... all 28 years plus plus plus ...
I still have the odd piece of tupperware my mom baught before we came to OM in 73.
Yes Sandy 3 legs it has. I've also got that mixing bowl you spoke about somewhere else on the forum. A thickish "china" type bowl cream on the inside and a sandy colour on the outside, everybody had one. Also every house had a bread cutter and later an electric frying pan became a must have.
My mom has a jaffel maker forever........anyone remember those?
I'm 39 and still going. Does that count? :36_2_35:
Hey Carl - I think the ladies are reffering to things that are still going strong........ :emot19:
Lo and behold! I always knew there was something amiss in my knowledge. Only now Carl comes out with it!
He was boutht as an household appliance 39 years ago. Unfortunately he got plugged in somewhere where the voltage level must have been to high - KAPOOF ....... HE'S ALIVE! Ja well, about the going strong.. idontknow
When I got married 30 years ago i bought a Sanyo microwave oven. Still going strong.
I also had one of those jaffle irons better than the electric ones you get today. I also have one of those big bowls that belonged tp my grand mother must be over 50 yrs old and still going strong. My mom used it to make her bread in.
I too remember those jaffle Irons, although I don't have one now. Memories
Hey Carl wishfull thinking!!!!!!
Jaffle was great. Maybe my mom still has hers. Must ask.
I still have a jaffle iron - use it on the gas stove for nostalgia sometimes
What shall i say, i am not telling allgood
yes rhona,i rember the jaffle irons too, latterday sandwich makers,my mom also had the brown /stone coloured bowl, also used to make her bread in it,we also had a waffle maker and a kenwood food mixer with all the attachments and a liquidiser that fitted on the top of the kenwood, she often made home made lemonade, wonderfull memories
The Jaffle irons are waaaaaay better than a sandwhich maker cause more filling goes into them - what about the soda stream; bet everyone had one of those......
Yep. A lot more filling. Any kind of filling.
HMMM! Cheese and onion style.
Soda streams. Wonderfull things. When they first came out, our curiosity got the better of us as usual. They were great for reviving flat coke, beer, and turning wine into champagne. Hey Rhona, did you ever try milk in your soda stream? Try it. It's a quick way of making instant butter. :36_2_35:
Never milk Carl - loads and loads of syrup though - the sweetest drink you will ever taste; loved the cream soda flavour best
