Was wondering if anyone knows who is the oldest surviving ex Omunder? Agewise and or lived here the longest time ago. Go for it... ask Grandma and Grandpa.
I can start the list but will my mom forgive me she is 75 came to O'md 1959 and retired in 90's
Sorry Alfie, I think I can beat that with Anita Reschke - she is in her early 80's if I remember correctly - must ask Mom for her correct age. Also not sure of exact dates of her and Mickey's time in O'mund. They came from Kolmanskop originally. Anita is now living in George, Mickey passed away a couple of years ago. It would be great to get Anita involved with this forum because she is also in contact with a lot of old Oranjemunders living in the George/Oudtshoorn/Mossel Bay area.
Oldest .. can but name a few ... Ena Bennet , heck ... Fred Whatley , Flora Fry quite a few still floating around well into their eighties by now .. will do some enquiries ...
Sandy
sandy, do you have contact with Flora Fry, rmember she used to run that department with all the glass crystals and gifts... Her daughter , Elizabeth was in my class, wonder where she is today?
???
My Grandmother - Marge Cattermole is in her 90's :o
Michael ... Flora Fry .. to the best of my knowlege in CT somerste west area .. not too sure .. my Mom had contact with her .. got pics of reunion get togethers but that would now have been about 8-10 years on now ... she was also at my Moms funeral Jan 2001 .. no contact since ..
Sister Martha Fry .. the nursing sister from hell .. her injections were to be feared .. She passed on late 70's .. brain cancer .. Bill used to run the Oranjemund newsletter and printing works .. also did photography .. had the whole hog in way of equipment and darkroom etc ... I remembre Ingrid well as she was friends with Ian and Pauline , ... the other names a bit rusty on ...
yes sandy, martha fry,she instilled some fear as i too recall, were the two husbands brothers?

Hey Bobby , I thought you said you were knackered and wanted to go sleep after all that housework! ;D
Thanks Alfie, appreciate it...... ( You're making up for all those years at boarding school when you used to beat me up! ;) ) , but that's another story...
Mike, was that part of your welcoming to the hostel or was I just having fun? Who was the guy that used to beat me up "Fritz somebody" looks like he beat me up badly I can't remember his name.
I will tell my sister about the web page she has lots of old Oranjemunders that she still keeps in touch with.
Charly Blakemore, I see him everytime I go to Cape Town he stays down the road from my mom.
Bobby, I don't think I will beable to see her but I will get a telephone number for you from my sister.
I used to got to Brian and Flora Fry for the odd out weekend from boarding school when they were staying in Kirstenhof in the late 80's. Wonderful lady.
Would really like to know what years some of the OLD timers lived here. Revealing their age may be treading on toes in some respects. (Just wasn't sure quite how to word the question).
So far Alf's mom holds the record - 1959.
Anyone earlier?

Alfred,
Tell Charles I say hello. we were clasmates at OPS
Andrew, Arthur COnry at Spar, his mom was here in the early 50's , I think she was born in Luderitz and moved here in the early 50's..... and to those of you who don't know her, she still lives and works here.....
Dorothy Conry!
;D
I just spoke to Dorothy in the shop now, she was born on the 5th of August 1947, in Oranjemund, she married Arthur then moved for a few years to Kleinsee and returned here many moons ago and now runs her own business..... so I think she takes the cake!
:o
I see Dorothy's maiden name for any old timers who might have known her family, it was Bowen, her father was Thomas (Tommy) Henry Bowen,a boilermaker, a biker and a drummer.
???
Robert, I will see Charly next week he left Oranjemund and started a business in Cape Town doing very well, going to twist his arm and get him on the oranjemundonline forum so you guys can chat, will send him your regards
Alfred
I know that one of my school teachers, Miss Nora Revington lived on past 100 years of age, she was recorded as being one of the De Beers pensioners still living before I left, I don't know if she is still alive or not. I think she was in an old age home in Swakopmund.
She never marry? and when did she leave here?
???
MIke I thing only the de beers pension fund may have those answers.
Would be interesting to find out. Anyone out there with connections to the De Beers Pension Fund offices???
Well so far we have quite a few oldies around. Clive's done ok 1952; I spotted Lionel Hillebrand in an other topic 1949-1963, and so far the record is with Dorothy 1947.
My mom Flora was 75 this year, not yet 80, Alfie, cheeky, she'll be mad with you.
she lives in Kirstenhof Cape Town.
She will be a font of imformation about the good old days as she arrived in the days of one tar road.
She regurarly attends reunions in the somerset area with all the old timers.
Barbara, I'm sure my mom, Vi Alexander , knew your mom quite well, You stayed in 4th ave next to the alley... My mom knew your mom from the shop!
:)
Barbarak can you send your mum's tel number, if you don't want to put it on the forum e-mail it to me
Thanks
Just found out about this web site and enjoy the chats that have been taking place. I also remember the Fry's very well, the printer and the "feared Nursing Sister"
Alfie, have emailed you my mom's number.
I personally cannot say I know the Alexanders, but will ask mom about it.
There were two Fry families, Brian Fry married to Flora, 4 daughters, Margaret (Jean), Sheila, Barbara and Liz
Bill Fry married to Martha, 3 daughters, Catherine, Ingrid and Margaret(Pamela).
Flora had a brother Jock MacPherson married to Barbara, son Chris.
I remember uncle Jock he used to work in Engine bay with my dad and his wife was also involved with the horses riding club, Chris used to work with my brother in law Steven Rudd in Cape Town I think it was SA Nylon Spinners
Alfred
Michael, Flora does remember your mom.
she says well done on site
Thank You...
Reading through the listings it still seems as though my grandmother ,as warren mentioned , is the oldest living ex oranjemunder. I cant say exactly how long she lived there but it had to have been the better part of 10 yrs. She's now 93 years old .
For Bobby a picture of a reunion with Flora Fry .. Ena Bennett , Eddie Daniels , Mom . Flora Fry .. about 10 yrs old this pic ..
My mom and dad, May and Abby Barron and sister Linda arrived in 1951, long before any tarred roads (from early photos I don't believe there were roads at all!). I was born in O'mund in December '52 (when they still had male nurses) and my younger sister Valerie cleared her lungs for the first time in May '54. My mom has just turned 80, and is still in touch with Kath and Ralph webbstock, Tony Dunster, Paddy Marx, Nancy Stocken and many more that I cannot remember (although she does clearly). I believe Viv Reyneke was born there as well and he is older than me, although I don't think he beats 1947 as the earliest born there!
many thanks sandy,i had a rite lump in the throat looking at that pic, many thanks bro
Yes, Brian and Bill Fry were brothers and I thought Martha was terrific aftr putting butterfly stitches in my knee instead of nylon thread !!!! Playing cricket with a parrafin tin as wickets, had it's own dangers.
My folks arrived in Oranjemund in 1950 and stayed until 1972 - Mom is 80 yrs old and still very sprightly.
I spoke to Flora Fry and Mrs Bennett at Fred's funeral.
She still stays in Kirstenhof area.
Richard Opperman .. How are you .. Keep the memories flowing and share them .. seems we all have the same good memories .. Sandy
Hi Robert, I visited Charly last week sent him your regards he looked at me as if to say how do I know you, I told him about our web site.
Lets see if he registers
Alfred
Hi, could anyone help but mom, Flora says she thinks Lawrence Grieg (Rec club) and or Anna Resca (main office) may take the price for oldest ex O/munders.

Aunty Anita Reschka, turns 83 in November, and the lady is still going strong, ex oranjemunder and Kolmanskopper!
That lady has some great stories....
:)
Would seem though that Aunty Marge, Warren and DahRils gran still takes the cake at 94 tho
