Where did the phrase ''Throw the baby out with the dishwater'' come from?

Wasn't it from the old days? Baby's were bathed in a dish like thing that was also used for other things like washing dishes?

Tch! Tch! Tch! Seemingly years ago - the man of the house always bathed first, then the mother, each child was then bathed in descending order - so you can imagine, by the time it came to the baby; the water was fairly mucky and dirty and so the phrase ''mind you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater'' was born.........

I think it's against the law to was a child in the dishwasher - although I'm sure each and every one of us has been in the sink at some stage..........go on - admit it!!!
