Post your 70's snaps in here!
Percussion band 1972. (Sub A)
Don't ask me names, I only recognize a few of them. I'm in front row, closest to camera.
Prefects 1978.
Back row: René Groenewald, Ronel Watson, Dirk Swanepoel, Melanie Wilson, John Smith, Marcelle Tuck, Bertie Horak.
Front: Carin Zandhuis, Headmaster (Mr.Hodge), Gert Muller.
This wasn't the full complement of the prefect list for that year, there was a bit of an incident with some of the prefects just before this photo was taken. :nono1: idontknow
The headmaster is Mr.Hodge
Thanx Michael, just edited my post.
Bertie, the girl next to you looks very familiar. She was in one of the English classes if I remember correctly.
Yes, she was Carl, and it's on the tip of my tongue. Will remember eventually!
I'll help you out of your misery. Her name is Marcelle Tuck.
@ Sheena - Thank you, thank you! I have edited into the post. Please tell me, were you there as well? Do I know you? I'll feel the total #*!$ if I don't remember another name!
Can somebody help? This was the athletics team representing the "Diamond" mines. I can not remember what year I was in then. Must have been 1974/1975.

top row from left: 1. may be Corney Schreuder

third row from left: 4 person: Lynette Beziudenhout
fourth row from left: 5th person: one of the Ebstein boys. Docter Venter the Headmaster
fith row from right: 2nd person I think a Kobus. He lived dow the road from us. He was one of the best athlets the school had in those days. Did a flic-flac backwards at the age of about 9.
Recognise some faces but no more names.
Yes Georg, it is Corné Schreuder, her sister Hanli sits next to Daphne Steyn to the left of Dr Venter. You're right about Kobus (Van der Merwe).
@ Michael, do you think I should put names down with photo and edit them in as more is confirmed, or would this take up too many space with replies? I know a few more of the lower standards, but need help especially with "older kids".
How's that for diplomacy - call them "older", yet to save my skin, followed by "kids". Learn Carl, learn!
Edit rather...otherwise the names become dispersed over too many pages...it's always better for the person who is viewing the pic to read and see what names are missing...
Ok, will do so!
dr venter was principal of parklands college till recently. how old is this guy ,80,90,100,odd???????
Oh golly, a blast from the past
I see Delia as well.......
C'mon Barb, help me with more names! Are you talking about Delia Munn? Is it perhaps her standing in the 4th row, 4th from the right? Wonder if we would be able to get all the names.
Quote from: BERTIE HORAK on May 29, 2008, 03:59:33 PM
Ok, will do so!
You're doing a good job in all your Post. I'm realy enjoying this. Thanks Bertie.
Top row from right 6th person may be Kevin Laubscher. Delia? Do you know for sure?
I think Barb means Delia Olivier, who is alsoon the board. She could be the girl 2 persons to the left of Lynette.
Can't believe I still have these pics in my head after 30 years.
Thanx Georg - will keep watching and picking the deep crevaces of the brain for more names!
Can't edit myself.
She could be the girl 2 persons to the left of Lynette.
@ Georg - already been done. Thanx for help!
Maybe I should say Delia is two girls to the right of Lynette. That's what my last post was about.
@ Bertie, I was a year ahead of you. Can't seem to place you either, probably because we were quiet and well behaved kids!!!
Your athletic pic - front row 3rd from left is Natasha le Roux.
Thanx Sheena, yes we must have been in the "soet kinners" group! I edited Natasha into the line-up! One-by-one we'll get everybody!
spot on george - that's me, 3rd row 2nd to the left of Lynette - Bertie, FYI - Delia Olivier - thanks for the awesome photo. Cheers...........
@ Delia - Of course, I see my mistake now. Must be age setting in! I remember you very well, just the names slipping from the 40+ year databank! Please let me know if you have any more names!
Hi Bertie - don't worry, we all sitting with same problem altho' some of us just dont like saying it out loud - be like an ostrich, stick head in sand and it'll go away........
:36_2_35:
I have no problems when it comes to the faces, know them all well, but as soon as I try and put a name to them, that's where i get stuck- you think you know the names but when it comes to the crunch, another story.........i've copied the pic to my hard drive and will study it - rack the old brain cells. I always thought you were with me in std 5 - 1977 - but it seems you were a year below me as Sheena as I were in the same year.
Hi Bertie
More names:
Top Row: 2nd from left Nicoline Gottsch and last in row Johan Matthee.
2nd row from top: 6th one of the Genade boys, 7th - Hugo Badenhorst, 8th is Moira (?) Longmore and third from the right looks like Lynn de Preez
3rd row: 5th boy from the right - Bertus Viljoen
4th row: 2nd from left Mickey Steyn, teacher is Daantjie van der Merwe and sitting next to Dr Venter on the right is Daphne Steyn
There are more familiar faces but these kids were my siblings' age, I will try to find more names.
Sorry, Muriel Longmore, not Moira!
@ Nada - I edited the names in. Thanx to you the list of names looks much better now! At this rate we'll have them all soon!

For those who just stumbled upon this post and dont know what photo we're talking about - just go back in this topic to reply #9!
Girl right of Karin Laubscher = Suzette Joubert (back row 4th from left)
Guy sitting left of dr. Venter = Fredderick or Fredrick Ausserhoffer. His sister Cyrene Ausserhoffer is sitting in the front row left of Natasha Le Roux.
Cheers
@ Lionel - thanx, we're getting there! I remember you well. Keep looking!

I can't believe he is still around!!
Are you sure it is the same Doc Venter? As he was principal of O.P.S when I was in Sub A in 1962. So lets say he was 30 then that makes him about 76 now . Thats if he was 30 then.
Hey, if he was 30 in 1962 then he was pretty grey already. He seemed pretty old to me at the time. I can't believe it was the same guy!!
I'm guessing 30 certainly not younger than that more than likely older
Is my memory correct Diana- I could have sworn that Doc Venter actually retired from Oranjemund so he must be very old to have been principal somewhere else?
I'm sure Chris has got the wrong Venter
Dr Venter retired to somerset west I seen him and his wife while shopping in the late eighties and he was not working them. He told me he was enjoying his retirement
His son is a member of this fourm, seek closure with him...... :emot26:

Dr. Venter left OM to work as a "school inspector" or what these guys are called. I remember him visiting St. Pauls in Windhoek. He ask Lance and myself to the pricipals office for a short chat. Probably the nicest moment I had with him ever. Otherwise I was scared Sh**** by him. lol
My goodness - this is me in St.3 in 1975 (sorry for the poor quality)
hi Dalene
It's a pity about the quality of the photo, I love to see how people change over the years.
There is an Idea will get photoes of then and now over the weekend. meanpuff
Can't get my scanner to work (don't mention it, but I lost the cd to install in on my computer) - tried to upload a driver for it from the net - to stupid to get it going still. So, I just took a picture of the pictures and posted it here. As soon as I get the scanner working, I'll post the pics again and some others that I also still have.
(I still have the same picksy ears - that has not changed over the years. He he he)
I still have loads of freckels - and the dimples that I used to have on my face have multiplied and moved to my ass. hehehehe image201but I don't mind - It's my own fault so eating so much rubbish over the years. faceinfood
Jnr. your memory is amazing, don't remember the encounter with the "Doc" but St. Paul's was great yeah. A certain Doctor Venter retired as principal from Edgemead High School a short while ago but I doubt very much if it is our OMD Dr. This EHS Dr was instrumental in the starting and formation of EHS many years ago, but as per our OMD Dr had a reputation of taking no nonsense. Apparently also used to wear the black gown, especially at assembly.
hi lance,i remember doc fenter and the black batman cape,do you also remember the marching music that was played when we had assembly, every morning being marched in front of the teachers and hearded into rows to sing the national anthem and being made to say prayers, take care boet, bobby the rebelious aithiest
Hi
just reading thro and the image I have in my head is of the old man in a red cape.
I know that Dr Venter was a doctor of education the only person in Namibia with that qualification at the time.
Does anyone else remember a red cape ?
I remember a black and a red one. Can't remeber whether doc or dickie wore the black one.
Yup, the capes gave them super powers in my mind when I was small! Also remember red and black ones. Maybe the black one was at the dry cleaners, and one of the red curtains was used temporarily. 202
The people who remember the black cape must be older. The red cape came with the doctorate.
grab hello Sheila
3d smiles(281) about time time you said something

Don't remember the marching music, but I do recall the whole school getting a bollicking quite regularly at Friday assembly for the "Anglo Boer" wars which lasted for a while amongst the pupils, was in about Std 3 or 4 at the time. The "wars" normally took place in the dumps behind the town garage or at the quarry, betwen English and Afrikaans speakers. If I'm not mistaken "wars" subject has been discussed under another topic. Stay well Bobby and look after yourself.

I remember the RED cape and the marching music at assembly back in the 1960's (well there was red on the cape somehow). Lance I also know the famous E.M.H. Doc Venter.......and no not ours.

Groete
Ronelle
Here are some photo's of me in OPS. Maybe somebody will recognise me.
I also sent a photo of J Neser and my brother, Marius, that were also there in the 70's
If I remember correctly, the Neser boy's name was Jaques - the son of Hein and Ina Neser. Hein used to be the chopper pilot in OMund way back then. Also an excellent photographer. They used to be very good friends with my partents.
You are correct. His name is Jacques and he is a medical doctor in the UK now. I will try to get him involved here as well. Sadly his mother, Ina, passed away shortly after they left Oranjemund.
Julle was in 1978 in st.5? Fanie se oudste suster, Amor en Neville se ouer suster, Veronica was saam met my.
Ek sit hierdie foto's op namens Johanda - sy het nie 'n scanner nie. Sy sal die name wat sy onthou, later "post".
The only person i recognise there, is Mr Hodge...
I recognise Ronel Watson, Neville Smith (next to Johanda - top right corner), also Hanli Grove, Gert Muller...
(thats on the class photo, dont know any names on the netball photo)
Johanda - we need your help!!
On the netball pic I recognize Brigitte van Awenzaath next to the teacher Jossie Esterhuizen.
Johanda can help or correct me:
Class photo:
Back row - Ian van Wyk, Ronel Watson, ?, Johanda Theron, Neville Smith.
Middle row - Maria Engelbrecht, Charl van Wyk, Hanli Grove.
Front row - Rene Groenewald, Gert Muller, ?, Bertie van Zyl.
I couldn't believe it when stumbling onto this site today. It seems that I didn't spend as much time on Oranjemund as the most other members on this site.
I was there from about 1968 and left in 1976 when I was in Std three.
Bertie Horak... Hoe gaan dit? Onthou jy my nog?
I am also in the first picture that was posted (The percussion band) allthough all that can be seen of me are my eyes and the top of my head sticking out behind the conducters left hand.
Welcome sigmund storm
Have fun with us and find new and old friends
Georg
And welcome again from me too! Just be careful, this forum can be very addictive! drinking-41
Georg and Andrewette, Thanks for the welcome.
A welcome from me too .. see you in Veldrif .. was up there the other day on a customer visit ... planning to spend a long weekend there .. got that wonderful relaxed west coast feeling to it that just made me feel soo good ..
Welcome from me as well. You mean it took you this long to s.t.u.m.b.l.e. across this site. Do pop into the Bot Bar some time free drinking-41 and pole-small then drinking-37
SandyB Thank you.
Ever since we left Oranjemund in 76, I've lived in Cape Town (Northern Subs) and only moved to Velddrif the beginning of May 2008. Couldn't stand the city anymore. My wife and kids are still Cape Town. I travel there evey weekend and they'll be joining me beginning of December.

@ Sigmund - Damn, you're going to make Georg very happy! Hope you have a lot of time on your hands this weekend, there's a lot of memories and photo's to work through. Believe me, when I discovered the site about 2 months ago, my life changed. Great experience with great friends! Almost like going home after a long absence.

Did'nt they have like triple the amount of kids in their team that the others. For some reason I always thought that blue team had the smallest number of kids, then green and red had half the school! Also - I'm sure of it - Zandie used to interview the new parents, then made the selection as to what team the kids would go, based on their previous performances. All the good ones got sent to the red team - never mind that - we still gave them a go!

Aunty Dalene, it's funny you should say that...coz, I always thought the same blerrie thing, the headmaster was Rhodes, the majority of the pupils were Rhodes..... Hi Gerrit
Dit is met hartseer dat ek van Doc moet lees. Het altyd oor die jare bly wonder waar hy hom bevind. Hy was die greatste persoon. Ek moet uitwys dat in my hele skool loopbaan was Doc my beste prinsipaal. Sal hom altyd onthou met sy glimlag en altyd reg om advies te gee. 'n Regte vader figuur. Ek is seker julle is baie trost op so 'n uitmuntende wese.

Hi Gerrit,
Sorry to hear about your folks. They, along with Gawie & Harriett le Roux were two couples that epitomised to me the notion of "salt of the eath" people. Honourable, kind and compassionate.

His son is a member on this forum!
Hi Guys
Yes it is my Dad,
Interesting how, when you are uninformed, you can be cruel!
Sorry to end the gossip and speculation with the truth, he was very healthy right to the end of his life. After retirement he continued working until the age of 70 and died on the 28th December 2003 at the good age of 87 of natural causes.
One thing I can say of him he never had a bad word about anybody, including staff and all the kids and at many a time did he speak of how proud he was of "His Kids"
May his sole rest in peace, he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather!
Regards
Gerrit (now an old toppie)
Gerrit, that is how I remember both your parents....
Your mother was my class teacher when I was in Std 3. During one of our mad dashes on the playground, I had a full 'head-on' collusion with a boy that left me lights out and bleeding all over the place. Did not tell my parents about the incident and went to play some kind of sports after school. When I got back home, your mother was visiting my parents. My first thought was - in trouble you are, Dalene! No, the purpose of her personal visit was to come and find out if I had told my parents that I had been unconcious at school and she wanted to find out if I was okay.
I will never forget that in my life - only later did I realize how special it was. She did not pick up the phone: no, she went to the lengths of getting in her car and driving from your house to personally come and see my parents. Where in this world will you find something like that today?
Yes, your parents were true gems and we share your pride as part of the big family in their "kids" category.
Thank you for sharing your memories of them with us.
Doc Venter goes way back to the 60's when I was in primary school.
Thanx Gerrit. I agree with Dalene. I was very sad when they left. Your Mom was my teacher in Std 3 as well - the year they left. What a sad day that was!!!! It was so nice when we kids ran into them on our way to the Eisteddfod in Windhoek after that. Probably the most hugs they got in one day!
Hi, you all, yes Doc Venter was a special headmaster, there is this one actor, and every time I see this guy in a movie I think of Doc Venter...yeah and most teachers today are not what they used to be, in it because they care not because of the salaries.....
Just picked up on this one .. miss a lot at times ... and yes Gerrit .. thanks for putting all into perspective .. your dad and mom were dedicated and caring folk .. and yes good educators ... Dr Venter and Mrs Venter were absolute stars in the sky ...
Regards .. Sandy Buchanan

Yeeeeeaaaaahhh!!!! Rhodes!!!

Hi Georg - yes, Lolita's brother was Charl - their dad was in Loss Control i think. Lolita was with me and Patricia in std 5.
Do you know what Charl is doing today? I remember him being the pal of the late Carl van Greunen.
By the way. He was the person I ever first of the records "Wish You Were Here" and "Dark Side Of The Moon". Probably among the best albums ever recorded.
No idea what he's up to. Patricia might know.
Pink Floyd, The Wall......."We don't need no education"........our national anthem at the youth club back in the day. Yup, with the "brilliantly twisted" mind of genius Roger Waters, i think i can 2nd that about them producing some of the best music ever. Dark Side of the Moon - awesome album.
Yes Gerrit, we are all old toppies now, father time waits for no one.
I remember your father mostly, not to sure if your mom was teaching when we were at school?
Your father I remember was a very stricked but fair man and agree never had a bad word for any one.
A good listener when it came to his teachers and students, certainly did not preach hell and fire when you misbehaved.
Keep well.
Hi there George
I still have contact with Lolita (p.s. for Delia - she is expecting TRIPLETS very soon - yes, first babies at the ripe old age of 44) and her brother Charl. He is well and living in George at the moment (he never married) - if anyone would like a contact number I will happily e-mail them privately. Their Dad, Charl, passed away tragically in a motor car accident some 15 or more years ago. Aunty Iris (who some may remember as the library "tannie") is also well and living in George.
Love this site!!
Go RHODES!!!! WHO ARE, WHO ARE, WHO ARE WE? WE ARE, WE ARE CAN'T YOU SEE? R-H-O-D-E-S!!!!
HAllo Gerrit...jou ma was my Std 2 onderwyseres. Met my verjaarsdag daai jaar het sy vir my n boek gekoop...Ilja die klein Gansriddertjie... het hom vandag nog en my kleinkind is nou al volgende jaar in std 2. Hoop jou naweek in Oranjemund was aangenaam. Groete Gerda Cloete
How odd it seems that there are no 'kids' from the 1979 English Std 5 classes on here. Are they not computer literate? Remember Mr Berg, Mr van Aswegen and Mr Marlow??
I had a Mrs Marlow in about 78.....
I know that he was married but i don't know whether or not she was a teacher.
... or was that a marsh mallow? image201
Sorry, I know it's corny.....
One says 'lame' these days. Corny ages you big time but I suppose O'mund was always a bit behind the times. 0:-)

I had Richard Marlow in Std 4 but I don't recall his wife being a teacher ... have you been smoking weed again Mike ???
Yes Patricia, now i remember, Richard marlow taught us English in Std 4. He used to draw the most amazing chalk drawings on the board. No idea what his wife did.
Are there any others from our Std 4 and 5 year on this site?
Ms Carr, there are alot of Std 4's on this site.....lol
JEAN BROWN! did'nt we have a Mrs Marlow?
are-you-there
MICHAEL ALEXANDER! Yes we did. Her name was Patricia and yes, she was married to Mr Marlowe. She was our standard 2 teacher (and a very nice lady if I remember correctly!!) Our Std 2 class photo is under the topic "Jean Brown's OPS photo's" - that might jog some memories....
JEAN BROWN! thanks, I now feel redeemed..... and not losing me marbles...

Hi
just reading thro and the image I have in my head is of the old man in a red cape.
I know that Dr Venter was a doctor of education the only person in Namibia with that qualification at the time.
Hi Barb.....I remember the cape......how are you all....xx
Does anyone else remember a red cape ?
Any body heard the tale how me Martin Rall, and a few other guys got send to Mr Venter by Mrs Venter for a hiding and how we came back full of bravado and laughing and got send straight back and got whacked again, six of the best image031 must say they should have had Mr Venter in this new era,man would he have made a difference :emot112_2:
ok! Question , was the school always a private school . I imagine so . look at the headings of the two raports 1976 & 1980 . one reads SWA Administration , the other just OPS
Who was the headmaster that signed that report, does not look like ol' Zandy to me...
:nono1:
Was it not Mr Dickinson? I remember Mr Zandhuis taking over after him.
Looks like the first report Dickinson and the second Zandhuis
Correct Alfred.
I did not have a good relationship with Mr Dickinson and Mr Kock maths teacher std 5
