Here's a nice snap of the old and New Oppenheimer Bridge next to each other...
Strange .. I was going to ask .. Is the old bridge there .. or has the river taken it out ??
When was the pic taken Mike? Must've been before my time, cause I don't remember the old bridge.
The bridge again, edited some and reduced size, i think i nice document.....
Son i dont remember the old bridge.
I suspect it was taken in the late 50's.... the old bridge is gone, well more than likely covered in mud and sediment..however just as you approach the SOuth African side on the new Bridge, you can see a piece of it sticking outta the reeds...the old barge also used to be stuck in those reeds until about 7 years ago, when it was removed...
I think the new bridge was only built in the mid 60's. I remember using the old bridge when we went on leave, we arrived in 1960.
...and maybe thats why the old bridge broke, after diana rode after it..... :culo1:

I remember the old bridge too and we arrived in 1964.
Stephen says he arrived in O'mund over the old bridge and that was 1972. Michael get on your bike please and go check out the plaque as to when the new bridge was opened.
Yes Michael, i nice ride with shadow, i want to know too
Thats why we have you, to chase you around the place LOL
Damn,,...I only found the old one so far.... the new one went up in either 56 or 61.....I think.... must find out for dear Diana....
I remember my mother telling the story of her arrival at the bridge following her marriage to Brian.
She was driven to the gate from CT following her honeymoon and all her belongings were loaded onto the barge, as the bridge was flooded or out of service can't remember -the water level rose up the barge till it was just an inch of barge sticking out, at this point she was invited tohop aboard - no way she said, never it'll never make it. Yes she was assured NO she said.
She had arrived 2 years prior in CT from Scotland on a union castle liner
On this day she had been driven through Namaqualand on the N7 road, gravel from Kolmanskop, she had seen nothing for miles, she'd seen cities become towns then dorpies then shacks and finally a barge -
that was too much for this city girl.
She refused, they had to take her luggage and return for her,
and I picture her like Cleopatra riding across the barge on her own...
Mom was married in 1956/7.
I can just picture it .... Cleopatra ... in her splendour on the barge albeit a bit rattled after a long dusty journey ..
