Busy scanning this today....
and....
Where's the rest Mike? :emot19:
Guys, the whole book will be online by 2morrow, I had to rescan as I used the wrong DPI.....
I was only joking Mike. But go ahead. That'll be interesting. We lived in OM at that time.
Here you go, the entire residential listings of the November 1978 phonebook. Now you might ask yourself, what kind of idiot scans an entire phonebook. Well , as you hopefully browse through it, you will see a few names that you might have forgotten.... a memory might return...... once again, you will need a pdf reader to read this...
Mike, where's the rest...you've only included H, R and S?????
Jean , I just put those 3 pages onto the post as a sample, on the first post you can download the entire document, all the names are there...... it's the pdf document
Yeeeeey - found my dad's name!
Ah-ha, I see it...thanks. After a glass of wine at the Spur, I can see clearly now...
errr there one above Ruf is also Rudd. on the RUF page. I'd had forgotten my phone and box number
diana i thought all us ex omunders had their pobox and fone number tattood on our brain forever, still remember ours it was po box 249,fone no 607,dads mazda reg was sc 192,
That's great Mike. So I remembered my number correcly all these years.. lol
I remember that well. This directory has our new number - 03-459. I remember the time when they added the "03" numbers. Before that, we were number 338, but I see they re-allocated it to the "Holl" family.

Stangely I have only got my parents box 471 and tel 716 from when I stayed at home tattoo'd on my brain.
Thanks alot for all the effort Michael. Spar must have been quiet for the past few days...lol.
@Bobby - I remember the old SC number plates quite well. Now for the bonus prize, does anybody know what the prefix "SC" stood for in the OM numberplates? Most people would have thought it should have been "SO" in keeping with the naming convention used in those days, but it became "SC".
The first correct answer wins a personally autographed "I love uncle Bob" T-Shirt and the opportunity to cast a million votes for Zanu-PF in today's runoff election.
I always thought South West Africa CDM
South West Africa Consolidated. Well done Mike. Thats a million votes for Zanu PF :emot78:
Uncle Bob says many thanks Carl .. he needs guys of your calibre in his Corrupt Cabinet ..
@carl,if my pip serves me rite, all the more densley populated places like walvis, swakop okahanja, keetmans etc,the towns were categerised in terms of their population, mike WAS correct in saying the S stood for south west, oranjemund, having the smallest population were allocated the prefix C, C de-noting the allocated prefix by the authorities, f*** im confussing myself now,put me out of my misery bud
Bobby - you're 100% correct. The "C" doesn't stand for anything specific. There are only 26 letters in the alphabet, and yes, the "O" was already taken by a "real" municipality, bigger than Oranjemund. The same for instance with "Otavi", which was "SE". As far as I know, there were no "triple" numbers, all of them had only one letter after the "S". I'm busy making a list of the towns and number plates. Will post it as soon as I've finished.
The C was taken from the C of CDM. "CONSOLIDATED" With so many other towns in the old SWA starting with O, they had to make a plan, and went for the company's first initial.
Bonus question nr.2 : Which lucky town was given the "O" ? ie Which town was given the number plate "SO" ?
That would be Okahandja
SL
SW
SK
LUDERTIZ
WINDHOEK
KEETMANSHOOP
:emot78: Another million votes for Zanu PF...lol
You two both wrong. The "O" was allocated to Otjiwarongo. I think I'll put you out of your misery and give you ALL the numbers. Here they are:
SA-Karasburg / SB-Bethanie / SC-Oranjemund / SD-not used (Swaziland numbers) / SE-Otavi / SF-Grootfontein / SG-not used (Swaziland government) / SH-Okahandja / SI-not used(looks too much like "1") / SJ-Outjo / SK-Keetmanshoop / SL-Lüderitz / SM-Maltahöhe / SN-Mariënthal / SO-Otjiwarongo / SP-Karibib / SQ-not used(looks too much like "O") / SR-Rehoboth / SS-Swakopmund / ST-Tsumeb / SU-Usakos / SV-not used (probably saved for Walvis Bay which was CWB then) / SW-Windhoek / SX-Gobabis / SY-Omaruru / SZ-not used / SBA-Owamboland(incl Ondangwa) / SCA-Okavango(incl Rundu) / SDA-(Kaokoland(incl Opuwa) / SEA-Hereroland East / SEB-Hereroland west / ECZ-Caprivi.
There you go - you'll see we didn't have much of a choice!
:emot112_2: Thanks Bertie. I wasn't sure about Okahandja, so in keeping with uncle bob's electoral habits gave him Michael's million votes as a consolation prize...lol
Damn! Now Bob might lose power..... Thats interesting, always had it wrong, I always liked the way back in the day, that when there was an election in the cape, that Walvis Bay fell under Greenpoint in Cape TOwn.....
Do you guys realy want to get rid of him? I mean you must've got used to him after the past odd 25 years.
Look at his age. Would you send your grandfather out on the street for the mob??? You should feel ashamed.
I think it's time to offer the guy asylem in the cote da zur. Just like the "Persion" guy in the 80s... He was so cultivated. Everybodies darling. Kept the moslims in the back row...
arse callme :emot77:
I can't find the name Mgabe in the phone book. Did you forget to scan that page Micheal?
His name was in the disadvantaged phonebook of the day.... image20
:sorriso2:
You van't find his name because you are looking under the wrong letter of the alphabet. You should be looking under a for L for lunatic!!!
well said cheryl dawoman
With reference to number plates when we first arriced in the fifties, o'mund cars had the letter "L" (I think that because Oranjemund was a "private" town we fell under Luderitz), it then became "OL" (which clashed with some dorp in the Free State), and finally "SC".
