Remember this map, telling you where and where not you could play/go?
Oops, I think I stepped over the lines a few times!!!! :emot172:
So we have to ask, was the Quarries out of bounds?
Robin and I decided the one time to shortcut to the beach over the salt pan that was behind the aerodrome .. we got there .. but once or twice had scary moments .. apart from the fences .. Verboten .. we sunk up to waist height in the mud .. Nice stable looking crust and you stand on it and crack .. down you go ... i remember testing the boundaries many times ,,,if it said dont .. then you did the opposite .. the Crystal quarry at the entrance to town .. dont know .. we just went there anyhow ..
Does anyone have any memories of sinking sand in Oranjemund? Memory a bit vague but remember that it was near to the river mouth. Perhaps someone else can comment?
Mike, what year was this map from? Seem to recall at one stage in the 70's that the river mouth was OOB for a while.
The map was taken form the back of a residents guide form the 80's..... there are three versions of this map from 3 different books..... they all differ...
OOB ??
OOB = Out Of Bounds
I think.............is that what your asking or am I a muppet
Clever Leprachaun .. me was in blonde moment .. Ta
i went riding on scrambler m bike across that pan and can say that it was scary,ended up covered in mud and having to drag bikes out there, ask john symes.

I remember Dunja. I have memories of playing in the salt pan at the back of the yaught club dam. got stuck a few times and nearly s### my pants! lol
On the North west corner of the pan their is still a TEMPO washed up on the beach their, abandoned..... just lying there...
if you were not oob,it was not called fun,yes mike the quarry was out of bounds,it was where the souties fought the boers,and did we carrots for it when we were all caught,good old days
@ Tamara, yes now that you mentioned it. Thats where I remember it too be as well. Think down on your way from the Log Cabin towards the River Mouth is where I remember somemore. Perhaps the brain is a little fuzzy after so many years so I could also be wrong...
The way not to get stuck in the mud was to go out through the wires behind the dumps at the back of town garage and head west before turning south to the Dunes directly in front of the Yacht club.
Check the map out.
There were always holes in the fence and tracks that the security partols left behind ( just made sure we didnt leave footprints )
