Does anyone remember those poetsie (sp??) flies that would lay eggs on the washing on the lines? I remember that my mom ironed every item of clothing just in case to kill the eggs vampire . Am I recalling correctly, or is old age affecting my memory??? Mike, do you still get them?
A nasty pest the were....... image21
Sorry Jean, I don't remember them, unless the domestic was removing them,,,, I have heard of the guys that lived up in RHodesia talking of them........
I remember them. There was a plague in the late seventies - Tsetse-flies. Horrible. Fortunately I didn't have one on myself, but saw someone who had one. Little worm had to removed from under the skin. Gross!!!! image06
I just googled them...putsi flies...this is what it had to say: "The putsi fly is a horrible little insect which lays its eggs on wet fabrics. For this reason it is essential to thoroughly iron all clothes after washing - especially underwear. If the putsi fly eggs survive in clothes the larvae hatch in contact with warm skin and immediately burrow into the skin causing a small boil-like bump with a black centre. To remove these maggots one needs to apply grease to the affected area to prevent the larvae from breathing." EEEUUUWWWW!!!!
Aaaaagggghhh!!! I remember; I remember......nasty little buggers - boils and oh such pain!!! image21
The putsi fly scare .. yes remember it well .. herese one for Rhona .. a story i posted under "how did we entertain ourselves " ask your Mum if she remembers anything of that night ?? seeing as she still owes a recollection of the squashbox on the lawn episode ?? enjoy ..
Entertain ourselves . yes lots of house parties ... Mike looking at the Mc Cullagh photos I see a few more of your Mum ... as I said about her before " always in her moment" is my fond memory of her ... another good friend of your Mum was Flo Worth ( still going strong and living with daughter Penny ) anyhow the One night we all at a at Sid and Flo about circa 77 , there was this big scare in the town with Putsi flies ( apparently they would lay eggs in your washing which could if brought in contact with skin allow it to burrow into skin , result being the larvae growing under the skin ... Uuugh ! ) instructions were to either tumbledry clothing or iron well as the heat would kill off the eggs .. anyhow one of the lady guests at the got a "bit tired " and decided to take a lay down on the lawn ... Flo and Vi in their jolly state decide that this is bad for the " tired guest " as she may well get Putsi flies from laying on the grass .. so the two of like naughty schoolgirls run into the house and emerge brandishing an iron ( cold of course ) and declare that they are going to iron her to " kill off the Putsi fly eggs " What a hoot .. "tired " guest is shocked awake finding herself being held down by Vi and being ironed by Flo Much screaming and laughing by all ...
Thanks for that Sandy.... for some strange reason, I always remember going around to the Worths place on a saturday afternoon....... pondok in the garden on the east side..... 8th avenue.... My dad also has a few of those two together tales.....
Yup they two were also a Mutt an Jeff team of naughtiness at times .. i remember the one time .. it was Jeff and Maries wedding .. anyhow the reception party was held at the Jone's place .. Your Mum and Flo decided as some of the men had slunk off quietly to caseys .. they would slink of to sportsmans to have a drink or two and do some darts ... weel when discovered the two respective husbands went looking for their wimmin .. finding them in sporties .. very jolly .. and creating havoc at the darts board IOW more darts on the floor .. pockmarked walls .. and a few narrow escapes from people who managed to dodge the darts .. .. ever so genteely done .. ever so gently led out of the bar with the silly grins on their faces .. i can still see it in my minds eye .. needless to say the menfolk were peed off .. that was their territory .. slinking off ..
dare i ask you sandy .were you one of my dads appies.talking to pepe,he held my father in good esteem,i would sometimes like a refrection of that man,sad hey,i didnt really know my dad.wot i really knew was the strenghth of my mom.she brought us kids up to value life,it hasnt done me wrong

I never had the privelege of him being an instructor at tech .. but heard so many good stories about him .. a true kind being .. human , fair . strict , caring and a good instructor all rolled into one .. take that to heart ..
