Heck, I have just seen the photo in the OPS section of the very first play I was in. I was one of the bearded dwarfs. You can just see me at the back behind the red satin costumed king. I have a light brown/sand coloured costume on.
I so wanted to be at the front but was told I was too tall. Sob! Boo hoo!
Trevor Dodd was the Towenaar. He is partly obscured at the left but you can see his magnificant peaked wizard's hat!. I cannot recall who the other dwarfs were.
talking about plays I remember my sisters being in a play, they were gypseys and had to die for costumes, I was really jealous cos I wasn't in it, that was until my dad had a good idea to use condies chrystals to dye their skin for the duration of the play.
It stained them for weeks, but I guess it was better than shoe polish.
What would the health and safety officers say about that now.
I had my debut at about 7 when I was a daffodil.
The one and only play I was in was Soetkoek ! an afrikaans production .. it was all about how Soetkoek was made ?? I was one of the corn reapers ... so we sang our song moving forward sheaf of " corn " in one hand bending down making sweeping motions with our sickles and trying not to tangle our sickles .. that happened too much ...
oh i remember a play...not sure what it was now but the part i was desperate to get was the cat......while the tom jones song "whats new pussy cat was playing....a girl called alison smith got the part and i ahted her from that day on..
Trevor Dodd...thats a name i remeber....had anyone got any real old school photos from the 60's.?....
Robert - I can remember that Danie Wolfaardt played the Head Dwarf. I remember Trevor - especially that horrible accident he had with his bike!
Were you not in "Jan of Windmill Land" which was staged in 1965? Brian Ray played the Santa Claus.

Ann,
Hope you are well. Sorry I missed this post last year. Been out of action for a while! Work, work and no play make Jack a dull boy!
I was not in the play but seeing the list of all the kids brings back so many memories. It is a rollcall of our time there at OPS. I notice Trevor is not in it either.I don't know why. The Bruce family was not in UK at the time. We went in '64. I remember seeing kids walking around High Wycombe wearing plastic Beatle wigs, (jawelnofine!), and carrying the latest Beatles album release called "A Hard Days Night" that coincided with the release of the movie of the same name.
But I need to ask, where are all these people now? So many names I see who are not participating (hey stop it...I took time out ok?!) here.
I emailed Ricky yesterday to say hi to the Webstocks, Borain and Dion Wessles. And if you are reading this Ricky, Anthony, Mark, Dion, Nigel or Derek - hello!
As for the leg accident - this was a story to tell about how fear for Mr Hawkins caused Trevor and me to do something daring but so innocent yet in hindsight so fraught with the potential dangers for which an OUT OF BOUNDS order was in place and which unfortunately ended up in a terrible way. And it had me cycling around OM in a total state of panic yelping for help after assisting Trevor to the top of the quarry with our bikes too. We assessed the situation, made a decision & swapped bike 'cos mine was the smaller and he could lean on it in a bit more comfort than his larger cycle. Little did I know that he'd pedal my bike home, while I went off on his trying to get an ambulance!
I'd ripped my shirt off and tied it around his leg as tightly as I could to hold his ripped flesh together and went trundling off. And yet he cycled home using only one leg. That was what I called a cool dude. My mom heard him crying as he rode down the 1st Ave road alongside the trees but thought he was playacting and ignored him! Yes she regretted this but he and I had always cried wolf far too often in the past.
I remember screaming my head off at Mr van der Merwe (PE teacher) as I sped past, who was about to tee off at the driving range. He looked up as he was about to swing at a golf ball in complete anger at being distracted...!! I can imagine what he thought. I ended up exhausted at the CBD whimpering and decided to go home to tell my mom, get Trevor the help he needed, and then face the wrath of my and Trevor's parents.
I really dreaded it because we were in one of Mr Hawkins' OUT OF BOUNDS areas and thought I'd be taken to the cops and then to court.
Between Trevor's leg and Sandy's "Night of the Cape Apes" I have some storytelling to compile.
