Washington - A compound in red wine may ward off a variety of medical conditions related to aging, providing heart benefits, stronger bones and preventing eye cataracts, researchers said on Thursday.
The study, involving mice fed a diet supplemented with resveratrol starting in their equivalent of middle age, is the latest to raise hope that the compound or drugs based on it may improve the health of people.
Most of mice given resveratrol did not live longer than other mice but were far more healthy in several important measures, according to the study published in the journal Cell Metabolism.
"The good news is we can increase health. I think that's more important than increasing life span," David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School, who led the study along with Rafael de Cabo of the US government's National Institute on Aging, said in a telephone interview.
Increased health
The mice in the study that were fed a high-calorie diet supplemented with resveratrol outlived those getting a high-calorie diet without the compound, the researchers said.
"Resveratrol wiped out the negative effect of the high fat," de Cabo said in a telephone interview.
Resveratrol, found in abundance in grapes and in red wine, has drawn a lot of interest from scientists and some companies, including GlaxoSmithKline <GSK.L>, which this year paid $720m to buy Sirtris Pharmaceuticals Inc, a company developing drugs that mimic the effects of resveratrol.
Sirtris scientists were involved in the study. Sinclair helped found Sirtris and is co-chairperson of its scientific advisory board.
In the study, some mice were fed a standard diet, some a high-calorie diet and some got food only every other day.
The researchers then began giving some of the mice resveratrol in either low or high doses when they were 12 months old, roughly the same as 35 years old in a person.
Health benefits
The mice given resveratrol experienced broad health benefits compared to mice not given the compound, they said.
The mice given resveratrol tended to have less age-related or obesity-related cardiovascular functional decline.
Their total cholesterol was reduced, their aortas functioned better and resveratrol seemed to moderate inflammation in the heart, the researchers said.
These mice also had better bone health than those not given the compound as determined by thickness, volume, mineral content and density, as well as reduced cataract formation in the eyes and better balance and motor coordination, the researchers said.
The genes of the mice given resveratrol were active in a way similar to mice on a very low-calorie diet previously shown to slow the aging process and extend life span in some animals.
The study was a follow-up to one published in 2006 showing resveratrol improved health and longevity of overweight mice.
De Cabo said while the new findings are promising, it would be premature for people to start taking resveratrol supplements to improve health, saying a potent compound like this might interact in uncertain ways with other drugs.
I do not wait for medical science to prove or disprove .. I have always drunk red wine ..
Red grape juice doesn't fall into the same category as red wine!
Look what it made you do trex-073

But thanks for the chocolate-51!
Enough said.....Red Red wine lalalala quickdop
Stennie only posted that article because he was trying to convince me that drinking red Monis Grape Juice was healthy for one, only because when we braai'd last night , I was drinking real man beer and due to the fact that he was on standby he stuck to the cooldrink...... bravo
I'm still alive - had some red wine and was miraculously revived!
Yes, Resveratrol is good for you. It is found in the skins and pips of the most red grapes.
All the effects Mike mentioned (in the article) is secondary effects. Resveratrol is simply an excellent anti-oxidant - so it removes or breaks down products of metabolism and the environment which is damaging to body cells. It is also ant-inflammatory. (Inflammation weakens cells - therefore easier to be damaged).
So, let's have some red wine. Sorry Mike, not as much benefits in grape juice - all the skins and pips are removed before the juice is made!
cheers
Okay Mike S - you were right, we might as well eat the grapes just like they are!
Mike S & Michele - hope you have big stomaches - you need to eat quite a lot of grapes to consume the same amount that is already nicely concentrated in a small glass of wine!
Therefor - glass of wine = much easier! idontknow
allgood THE DOCTOR has spoken..... quickdop
How about grape jam....lots of skins and pips.

And I thought this is all about red wine.
I know...they have no respect for a good Shiraz or Merlot. Eating pips and skins indeed.
By and by Sandy, Daddy Georg and I need a wine bottle or wine glass smiley please.
Don't know what happens to resveratrol when the jam is made (boiling), and what's the use - little resveratrol, taken with heaps of sugar which increases by-products and metabolites???
I don't think so ---- rather stick to the wine!!
Red wine protects your arteries
Red wine, to an extent, counteracts the ill effects that cigarette smoking causes, a new study has shown.
But, researchers warn, this is not a license to ignore the dangers of smoking. The study stresses the benefits of the antioxidants found in wine, and these protect against the worst damage cigarettes can cause.
Polyphenols a powerful antioxidant
The researchers used a non-alcoholic red wine for these tests. This was a Greek wine, from which they had removed the alcohol. The wine is rich in polyphenols, says John Lekakis, a researcher from the Alexandra University Hospital in Athens.
The wines were subjected to taste tests, in which it was found that the normal wine and the non-alcoholic version were very similar, and that volunteers could not distinguish which of the two types they were drinking.
The test involved just 16 adults and the aim of the test was to look at the effects of cigarette smoking on the arteries. Three tests were conducted: the first after the smoking of one cigarette, the second after drinking two glasses of red wine and smoking one cigarette and the third, drinking two glasses of non-alcoholic red wine and smoking one cigarette.
Alcohol not the healing factor
Researchers found that two glasses of wine – it made no difference from which bottle it came – counteracted the effects of the cigarette smoking on the artery function.
"Since the presence or absence of alcohol on the two types of wine didn't influence the results, we can conclude that constituents of red wine other than alcohol are responsible for the reversal of arterial dysfunction caused by smoking," Lekakis says in a press release.
But he does not recommend drinking two glasses of red wine for every cigarette you smoke. This can bring about health problems of its own. The study's results have increased knowledge on how smoking damages arteries and which substances could partially reverse this.
Red, red wine makes me feel fine - wise words from the 70s and 80s!
Come now Richard sing it like Niel Diamond did ! cat3
We are always being told red wine is good for you. Look at the French they say. Lowest heart attack rate in the world. Once asked what they die of. Guess what. Liver disease. Take more than that to get me off the bottle!!
Have you been to a Frensh market or supermarket Gordon? What I like most there is, rensh loaf, fresh fish, veg and salad, cheese, ham and salami. Fantastic. Adding a good bottle of wine and the day is perect.
Boobs Well, almost.
Snippet from the Essentials magazine that I read last night:
"Scientists in the US have found that the resveratrol is the key ingredient in red wine that gives it its anti-cancer properties. Allow yourself two glasses a day!"
I think I'd prefer the jam though!

The jam all wrapped up in a do-nut........mmm! feedme
I prefer cream doughnuts!

does marmalade have the same properties,i love jam n bread, and marmalade on toast in the morning with a fine cup of freshly perculated coffee, ive tried quassaunts[spelt wrongly me tinks]other continental things but keep those english things ,also like a good cup of strong tea
hot toast and nutella chocolate spread - was taught that trick in South Africa.........mmm! mmmm!
peanut butter and apricott jam,the mother of all tastes
I reckon marmalade is better because it's got fruit peel in it. You can keep your coffee though, a cup of green tea in the morning at work does me just fine!
I couldn't figure out what your quassaunts was at first - croissants! 202
Shannon wanted peanut butter and grated cheese the other day, I asked her after school how it was and she reckons marmite and cheese is better!
Have you tried marmite, avocado and grated cheese? Mmmm, mmmm!
Now you guys are just being strange.............I see a guy at work pouring tea into his breakfast cereal cause he doesn't like milk
Yuk! That must be disgusting! Why doesn't he just eat toast then! Or have oats which don't need milk!
CHEERS
To my friends who enjoy a glass of wine.. And those who don't.
As Ben Franklin said : In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria. In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink 1 litre of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. Coli) - bacteria found in faeces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop.
However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.
Remember : Water = Poop Wine = Health
Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk kak, than to drink water and be full of kak.
There is no need to thank me for this valuable information. I'm doing this as a public service

Thanks Mike - are you telling me I'm full of kak? AT least I'm not talking it though!
Next time you come around bring two bottles of that red wine so that I can drink the other one!

@ Michele - at least the Mikes would make sense if you drank the second bottle of red......... sorriso2
Here's a glass of wine to you Stennie. Besides E. Colli in water you obviously know what fish do in water, yeah. Stay well buddy.
