Does anyone remember the log cabin along the beach road before the golf course on the right. It was build by the scouts as a camp site I think. It was used as illicit venue for many a party.
Is it still there it looked really well build and weathered quite well as I remember it on my last visit.
It was there in the days of the wild horses, before someone had the bright idea of catching one and taming it, which started the riding school.
I remember riding bare back and being glad of the sand when I fell off.
Yes it is still there, kept in good condition it is now the venue for the off road club

Yeah way back in the early 80's ...... the routine for Friday's was work.... Sportsmans... movies... sportsmans and then on to the log cabin (there was always a party). Needless to say the "chevron" got overtaken by quite a few people.... I know I put my indicator on more than once but was luckily stopped in time by a slightly less inebriated passenger!

Wow the cabin has been improved since the last scout jamboree I attended there. It is luxurious by comparison. It was my first real camp out in a tent. Kudu was scout master. Can't remember his proper name.
The cabin had no door and had no grass, was filthy and the bare cement floor was uninviting. Nothing but sand outside back and rear. No amenities.
At least I can see progress here! :)
The oriinal log cabin I remember was down at the river and I remember walking down there to "build" the cabin with the scout leader Ivan Morrow. We walked all the way from Town to the river in one long line - the whole Scout club. Ivan ran the Scout movement and was great with the O/M youth. Google earth shows some building in the area but whether its the original or not I cannot tell. Certainly the photos on the site seem a little too new...
The wild horses ,, yes I remember about 4/5 years old circa 1960 .. My Mom , dad , the gang .. arthur , curly , etc used to hold braais down where the log cabin was not yet , by the river ... I remember canvas groundsheets .. makeshift canvas shade shelters .. braaing partying .. .. and the ballbiting ants .. they would always head for the sensitive parts and then bite .. coming back from one of these braais ... just flashes ... driving home in landrover bakkie .. me in front with dad and gus .. Ian and dog blackie on the back ... suddenly horses hooves hitting the window .. window cracked ... sweving .. careening off the road down embankment .. rolling .. being tossed around in cabin of landie ... scary stuff ... next us all sitting around dazed and shocked ... everybody Ok .. just Ian with a cut and blood runing down his back crying and in pain .. . nothing after that strangely .... it was one of the wild horses that ran in front of us ... considering nobody was strapped in and the interior of the vehicles were just about solid metal .. miracle nobody was seriously hurt ... I attach a pic of ian in prime at engagement party .... circa 70/71
What ever happened to 'Shepherd's Neck' which was built duing the time of Brian Shepherd who rand the Scout club after Ivan Morrow? Used for weekend camping by scouts? It was somewhere near the bridge where we used to park our cars?
Shepherds neck is now like a lodge... has cabins on that are rented out... havent been there myself but I believe it is pleasant.
Regarding the log cabin... I remember when Fanie and Ria ran it as a restaurant sometime in the 80's... it was a great place to have a meal and dance.
We were one of the first to use the log cabin again after the town opened and access was allowed to the cabin again - Omund opening reminds me a bit of the fall of the Iron Curtain!
Once the company installed electricity it was party time - remember collecting the keys from the Rec club manager. Will look for photographs of that time.
Only drag was the cleaning up the next day! 8)
This is how I remember the log cabin, I think a lot of old Omunders remember it this way.

Mike's photographs posted on this page on 02 August (?) show the "cabin" as it is now. The penny dropped with a number of clubs a few years ago when it was realised how many roofed areas could not be reliably used due to the inclement weather. Since then a number of clubs have enclosed their stoeps including the Bowling Club, "Op My Stoep" (the Riding Club) and the Log Cabin. (I'm not sure where the trend started but I like to think it the Security pub - the "POH" - was amongst the forerunners). As a result they are getting full use of these floor areas irrespective of the weather. Other clubs, such as the Angling and Golf Clubs, have enhanced their clubhouses with the intention of allowing additional natural light in, as well as access to the great outdoors.

HI Richard .. yes the log cabin parties . the pics on the teenagers link .. blast from the past .. I ahve pics as well .. quite a few in slide form ..got to get them scanned and submitted .. just a csae of finding the time .. .. talking about the log cabin .. I remember the early new years morning Viv and I nearly wiped out my fathers car .. , think it was start of 77 .. He is long gone now so I suppose I can tell the story although he mosy probably heard from the grapevine.. we had been trolling from party to party ,, we used to go to the Alexanders , obviously pop in at home and then fly off again .. we were really on the move and quite out of it ... anyhow as the sun was coming up we were heading for the log cabin to sit up on the roof to see the sun come up ... I foolishly let Viv drive ... as we rounded the last bend she sort of lost control , next thing we are careening off the road down the embankment at an angle , the car kind of dug its nose in and scooped up a load of gravel and sand which was thrown over the top of the car and next thing we are going through the bundu .. Viv has by now let go of the steering wheel and is screaming and tearing her hair out .. I had the presence of mind to grab the handbrake bringing us to a halt .. ( I thank the stars it was a citroen .. I am sure any other car would surely have rolled ) Of course all the people already on the roof of the log abin get this full show of this car leaving the road and nearly wiping out . .. I managed to get the car back up on the road .. and then we joined the party .. the damage if any we would deal with later ... When we went to Ronnie Emerys place for a braai later that day I plucked up the courage to look properly at the damage .. .. the entire valence under the nose of the car looked like crumpled tissue paper .. I proceeded to try and " iron " out the damage ... with planks .. was reasonably successful we then painted it black to disguise ...

Richard .. thanks for the pictures .. Luderitz .. yes it was a drunken time .. we were trying to escape from the reality of the horror that awaited us .. I was 17 at the time .. so my carefree youth was being cut short .. Do you remember us all in the bar at the Kapps Hotel singing the song by I think it was black sabbath .. " she came to me one morning " ?? and banging our glasses on the bar counter ... Our lives changed from the moment we ended up on that train .. as for the beach party pic ... I think the brownish beetle was my hired car .. it was my favourite .. the purple one had problems with misfiring ...
Yes Sandy I do remember the song it was a Uriah Heep number off the "Salisbury" LP called "Lady in Black", I now have the CD.

Log Cabin..... I had my 21st Party there. Still got home with a huge branch stuck underneath the merc's carriage. Eish... Dont ask.. I don't know either
Ah yes, the 'log cabin'. What a blast. Some good parties held there. Does anyone have memories of the the wooden braai shacks on the beach? All the braais and sleepovers there too. Those were the days!!
@Jenny, they have been replaced by Cement structures as the folk with the party spirit landed up using the wooden structures fro bonfires.... Hot(1)
