Title: Only in Omund today!
Post by: Michael Alexander on July 18, 2008, 09:25:01 AM
Nice living in Africa..... Just received this email..

"Hi all,

Did anybody loose a grey coloured pet baboon ?  There was one in our neighbour's trees this morning at
No 5 - 14th avenue.  When I threw some bread in the garden,  he came down to eat,  so he looked relatively tame.

Ella,  is this something for our radio "kontreinuus ?"

Alternatively,  he may have heard that the town might open up to tourism in the not too distant future and came to do some market research.  We also saw a springbok next to the Swartkops road for the first time the other day, so who knows what the animals in our area have in mind.

Enjoy your day.

Dunno what Bob Mugabe's spies were doing next door??? but the springbok has been resident at the stables in the paddocks and surrounds for the past few months. He was getting used to human presence in the fields when we put out the feed for the horses; would keep his distance then dive in for a bite then later cruise around the area grazing. Sadly we haven't seen him around the past week, hope he hasn't ended up in the pot...
Here's a pic taken 25 April this year on the town side of the top paddock, the tar road visible behind.

Just saw the springbokkie again this afternoon... grazing away merrily with the Gemmies on the grass at the entrance to town. (Sorry, no camera = no pics) The first time in a long while that I've seen one this close to town or the traffic this side of the fence. In the mine area I've seen plenty, and right beside the road, not even afraid of the passing vehicles. Herds of 15, 20 and 30+

Good to hear that Springie, the bok, is safe and happy with his gemmie tjommies.   Remember to take your camera with next time, please.   I see the springbok on the farm a lot, but they never fail to amaze me with their grace - and the young babies when they pronk  -  just to beautifull for words!
