He he yes this one is more then familiar to me lOL
Georg, First pic. These le Tourneau open bowl scrapers, like the le Tourneau dump trucks, were elecrtically steered with two buttons left and right in front of the driver . A strange sensation. Crashed one of the 5m3 capacity dump trucks into 65G oversize dump once when the electrical steering malfunctioned.Frightening experience.Other earthmoving pic looks like a Cat twin engined 657 being pushed by Hough 500 and a Cat D9 dozers in tandem. Other e/m pic. The first albino Cat iv'e ever seen!!!! Regards
Gordon

Some more from the archives
Hi George,
Very nice pictures, brings back some memories of the mine how it looked in the 70s.
Was in Oranjemund about 4 years ago when Rainer Siebers took a De Beers package, he managed to arrange a mine tour for Debby, Cathy and l. The mine does not look the same any more, 4 Plant no more, only recovery, sort house, driers and HMS left, No 3 Plant was the only plant still in operation then.
I have many photographs of the mining and recovery area that I took in 1979 before I left Oranjemund for good.
Will try scanning them sometime and post them on the site.
Keep well
Richard
Go ahead Richard. Pics will be more then welcome in the board
Have a nice day
Georg
When I was at Affenrucken we had a competition to see which was the strongest/toughest dozer. Everyone thought that the D9 which had tracks, would be more powerful than the Hough 500, which was a tyred dozer, when it came to pushing and traction and that sort of thing.
Surprise, surprise. The Hough outmuscled the D9, even though it only had tyres. One would have thought the D9 with its tracks would have more grip. Perhaps the power was better used in the Hough.
Just goes to show . . .
Some pics from an old album that I have. Don't know when they were taken - my dad will probably be able to enlighten you.
last two...
