So how many of you (ex) Oranjemunders, dug out a piece of cardboard or your mom's tray, went over the line to the east of town and walked out to those big dunes and surfed them....?
???
SandSurfing in the Namib!
Only did this when at the beach. Fun ;D
Hi Mike,
For this we need to get Dieter Heiser, Jacob Kruger, the Dunsters, myself and a few others to give their versions.
Remember the Fibre glass landrover roof's, well in the 1970's there were a number of these in the dumps, the bunch of us were Appies at the time and as usual looking for something differnt to do.
We cut a section of the roof fitted a stiffener and made a Ski, long enough for three or four of us, tied this with a long length of rope to the back of a landrover Dieter had the use of. Dieter then towed this contraption with us behind the landrover on the dunes near the quarry.
The base of the first one wore through quickly so the mark II had aluminium stiffners fitted.
It was great fun at the time, I remember that sand stung our faces ( we eventually used goggles ) the bushes that Dieter towed us through, but the number of times we tumbled off as Dieter managed to get us surfing, I could not say.
Lets see what Dieter says
Mike, we just did it this weekend. Took a group of girls for Kea's 10th birthday to the dunes and they tried to surf but didnt get very far......... Your jnr included ::)
OH wow, I have just had a look at the photo' s that Susan put up, can you beieve it, those children are just where we used to be, it just seems wierd to have our own children now and they are doing what we used to do, follwing in our footsteps, or should I say "sand"....I can't believe so many people have got married and have kids! Iknow, I like to believe that I am still at that age of never growing old......I miss being a kid you know, although I tell myself to grow up all the time....... It don't feel right being 36 oh boy did I just say that.......it's not fair I want to surf down dunes.....oh, can anyone remember when Duane added a bit of rope to the back of his car and at the end of the rope was an old bonnet and he would drive us pulling this bonnet with us onit on the beach and through the water......that was fun.
defo remember the sand dunes, just rolling rolling rolling, and then taking for ever to climb back up again (short legs) just to tumble again....brilliant
We used to run down the dune/hill at Beauvelon. A wonder noone got hurt. the dune turned into a "gravel" hill. At a certain stage.
we used cardboard to slide down on the grass at the campingplace.
No electricel amusement gadgets. Nur computers. just sunny skies, braaivleis ect. Remember that Chevy ad in the 70s?
