Looks a damm site bigger  better  and neater than  the Kwikspar in Pinelands .. I jokingly call it  the 'Sparse " sometimes ... although I do like their sunday lunch take out .. roast chick pork or lamb with veg  and roast taties and choice of rice .. gravy  .. mint sauce etc..  nice if I feel like some comfort food ...  then again you go to the spar at paddocks  in Milnerton .. a deli section to die for ...

Firstly well done Mike :-)  Must say your display isles and the neatness of your shelves could put most Spar's here in Pretoria to shame!!!!

Just a few things that I noticed, CCTV Camera's???  Wow I counted 5 in a row against what appeared to be the right side of the wall?  All in such close proximity to each other? (Sorry I work in the security industry) Why so many in such close proximity?

Sorry but could not help  notice that the lady that was stocking the bread roll counter was doing so with her bare hands?  Hope she washed them before ?

No offence, just an observation .....

Very impressed Mike; looks like a far better range tese days than when I left Oranjemund!  We have a great Spar here on Rosmead avenue as well run by a Greek family that's fantastic too.

@ DUnja, the five camera's in a row point down five different isles, we have 5 covert camera's also in the shop, which has helped us (Adriaan) catch at least 20 staff member sover the last 3 years.....

@ Cherry, Rosemead won quite  few awards over the last few years.... and yes, we do get complimented on the wide range we carry for such a remote store , at the last count we had 16 different mustards and 18 000 different lines....

The photo;'s to not show the whole truth, as the store is actually quite dirty and in dire need of painting, but this will cost in excess of 100 000, just for the inside, and with the unsure future of Oranjemund, one wonders if this would be money well spent, especially after us having to fork out close to half a million for a new generator.....

The building is also falling to pieces and the floor is trashed with tiles coming up left and right...

Mike

I am impressed! A much better set up than when I lived in Oranjemund.  Tell me, is there no separate bottle store and market anymore? We also have two Super Spar's here in Pretoria, the one is located in Eldoraigne and the other in Queenswood. Here in Pretoria most of the Spar's sell cooked meals.  Must admit it is cheaper to buy a meal there than preparing for two people. Keep up the good work.

Are you guys in Nam planning on upgrading to the new Smart Tag system? I thought it looked cool here at our local SPAR, so I "liberated" one to show you.

Title: Re: Oranjemund Spar Today!
Post by: Carl Wrbka on August 18, 2008, 07:38:27 AM
The tag contains a programmable microcontroller. Each tag is labelled with a description of the item whose price is to be displayed. The shop owner pre-programs his inventory into a hand held programmer together with each item's price. The programmer is then given to the shelf packer who during his rounds just points the programmer at the tag of the item on the shelf and the correct price is sent via an infra red link to the tag and is displayed for all to see.

All in all, its a much smarter and more efficient system than having to re-label the shop inventory every time the prices change.

Post by: Cherry (Alcock) on August 18, 2008, 07:56:48 AM
Ahh, thank you; now if we could get all shops to make sure every item is labelled whether on the item or the shelf price, I for one will be a happy puppy!

The technology has been available for years allready. Its up to the store owner whether he wants to use it or not. These tags are mass produced in China for less than R10 each. A small price to pay if you want to keep ahead of the competition.

You should try the Spar in Secunda then. Very clever marketing strategy, they open at 6am Mondays to Sundays. The shop is on one of the busiest morning routes, and by 6:30 am the place is packed with customers. They always catch the morning Sasol traffic as well as the tannies taking their kids to school. Then theres also the odd school kids stocking up with Chesterfields for first break. Very clever tactic, send one of those beggers from the car park in to buy their smokes for them...brings back memories of of my youth... 202

Hey - some of have a life as well!!!!!!

It wasn't that many years ago that the shop closed on a Saturday afternoon and only opened on a Monday morning. Now if we close for one day there is panic buying! I just love the shop on the 24th of December as we close for 2 days - the queue is unbelievable and you see the same people coming back 3 times! Lucky for us we always have the keys if we need anything!  image19

It's possible that the Irish folk might lay claim to this particular breakfast combination. However, there is generally no alcohol involved, and I have yet to meet an Irishman who can eat without drinking. Moreover, if we could agree to allow you to hijack a "full Irish lunch" may we not continue to refer to the first meal of the day as "English"? Please.......Besides, most menus in S.A. would have to be reprinted to satisfy your request!

Dont forget the Jamesons. Damm good whiskey!  It was in fact the Irish that invented whiskey. The Scots stole the recipe and claimed it as their invention. Same with vodka. Invented by the Polish, and stolen by the Russians.
