been thinking and as the only person online from my year, can you remember -
John Vogel- wearing platform shoes, Colin Groom, Gary Vickers, (we got into trouble walking beyond the security fence) Chris Vermaak,(gave me a gold signet ring?) Steven Brownless, Paula Wallace, Vivienne Stanbridge, Linda deBeer, Delia Munn.
Stephen Hucker (RIP)
I can remember them as if it were yesterday Barbara! Last saw John Vogel in New Zealand in 1987.He had an older brother called Tony. Gary Vickers had an older brother called Leslie. Who could ever forget Steven Brownless? Geez, he was a real naughty sh*t. I believe he went to the UK to become a copper. I think most of us guys had the hots for Delia Munn, Paula Wallace and Linda De Beer. Did Vivienne wear calipers on her legs for a short while? I may be getting her mixed up with someone else. I wonder where they have all ended up? Around that time there were also other names that I can recall: Giselle Easton, Simon Mason, Steven Hodgson, Sabina Meyer, Mark?Bannister, Lynette Bezuidenhout, Sharon and Mark Swanepoel (He sent me an email last week), Wayne Boltman. How far back do we actually go? I arrived in O/mund midyear 1971, halfway through Sub B. My teacher was Miss. Loots. She eventually left, to pursue a career as an air hostess. Were you in my class back then? ...... Sorry, but the memory is a little jaded.
shit this site gets into your head, had a look through the old newsletters and found pictures of myself in the tennis team, with Mark Swanepoel. Pictures of soccer boys, Chris, Gary and Kevin. Lynette doing gymnastics.
Vivienne did have calipers, I last saw her during high school, she went to Fairview in Tablebay.
Unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough to escape Mrs Castle, in Sub B. So no we weren't in class together that year.
I think I went on to be in Mrs Wilson's class, Mrs Coffin, don't have any names of faces after that.
I do remember a Afrikaans teacher(ST5), had a moustache, who used to walk on desks and had a cane covered in insulatation tape stripped. I think I even remember him picking a desk up with someone sitting in it.
Boys and girls were removed from the class and belted outside. We were then given 5 minutes to walk around before coming back into class.
I was whacked on the open palm of my hand a few times.
The afrikaans teacher .. was it not Mr vd Merwe ?/ did PT as well ...???
you may be right, rings a bell, not sure, Mr Esterhuizen seems to fit the face of a teacher in spotted in the photo(staff 1979)
He doesn't have a moustache though maybe two people and I'm muddled. He did do PE and History maybe.
correction photo is staff 1975
Hey Barbara,
I had Mrs.Castle for math's, and possibly another subject, but she wasn't my home teacher. I also had Mrs.Coffin at some stage, and Mrs.Wilson. There were always two English and two Afrikaans classes for each standard, so I'm guessing that we must have been in the opposing classes in the same standard. I am pretty certain that you and Margaret, or just yourself shared at least some subjects with me. That Afrikaans teacher, sounds like Mr.Esterhuizen or Mr.Koch?
Can you remember if you were naughty, you were told to stand outside the class? This was almost as bad as getting a hiding, because if Dr.Venter or Mr Dickinson saw you standing outside, you were marched off to the office and promptly dealt with anyway. You would just stand there with your fingers crossed, and hope that you wouldn't be spotted. There was always that 50/50 chance.Real mind games stuff.
Hey Sandy,
I don't think it was Mr.vd Merve, as I think he may have left already. I do remember who you're talking about though. You're correct , he did take PT. He was very strict as I recall. He must have just left the Army or something, because I can remember him making us march for the whole period sometimes. We weren't allowed to flinch one bit. If he saw you, the cane was waiting. One day, he burst into the changeroom whilst we were getting dressed back into our school uniform, and demanded to know who was talking. No one owned up for obvious reasons, so he lined up the whole class and caned us all, no more questions asked. Discipline was pretty full on back then!!!
yea, Docter Venter's office I only ever went there on official business, LOL, but even then I stepped gently, made it though school without being in his bad books. I tried very hard to be very good, was there a story / urban legend about him and his lack of certain bit of anatomy.
LOL ..... Missing a ballas???!!!!
Hi Nicky, been a busy day at work...only got a chance to get online now, but quick question, you mentioned Steven Hodgson, is he the son of Sue and Gerald, coz they both retired in Oranjemund, Sue owns the Flower Pot, shop for plants and things....
???
Howzit Mike,
Yeah, that's them. Gerald was a plumber I think, and Sue worked in the bank. Where is Stephen and his sister Jackie? They used to live opposite the school.
Steven was in town about a year back , give me a moment and I;ll phone Sue quickly over at the Flower Pot....
;)
Ok, Sue will be registering soon on the forum, Steven is living in Cape Town......and they still live opposite the school.. ;)
Wow, they still live in the same house .... that's amazing!! Thanks for finding that out Mike, and for contacting Sue ... will have to logout now, as it's almost midnight here .... addictive site .....
Hi Nicky
Hello - and where are you today in this world? Stephen is in Cape Town as well as Jaqueline - she has a son and Stephen is still a bacholar you can email me on flowerpo@mweb.com.na and I will give you his address and telephone number - Where are your parents now? You guys used to be quite a gang with tennis, boy scouts, parties, hydroponics (smoking) !!! and of course the girls, girls girls in Oranjemund . The park at the back of the Youth Club and piling over the swmmming pool wall was your usual sites for getting up to mischief!! Take care
Hi Sue,
Great to hear from you, and thanks for replying! Yes, I'm still kicking, and have often wondered how you all are, and what you have been up to over the years. So you can still remember " The Gang" and what we all used to get up to all those years ago. I hope you don't remember too much.....Lol. Thanks for posting your email address. I will send you a PM shortly.
with referance to afrikaans teacher, sadly I have all my old school reports and have looked up his name, Aucamp
shamedly I must confess his comment was "swak moet verbeter"
Hi again Barbara,
Ha that's classic ...... Mnr. Aucamp ..... I had actually forgotten all about him. I don't know why, because he was pretty strict. Certainly not the sort you wanted to upset. Thanks for stirring those dead grey brain cells.
some things probably best left forgotten ?
He was differant, don't think he stayed long.
Yeah, I guess!
sorry, what about prize giving. Any memories there ?
Only of all the other kids getting prizes ... Lol.
Yea I know about that.
The only certificate I got was my ticket out - on completing std 5.
I'm sure Margaret got some prizes .... wasn't she a boffin?
She was good at most things, yes. Boffin, I guess.
I did come third once in backstroke AND diving.
The only thing I was ever good at was chatting.Lol. Hey, how come Margaret doesn't feature on this site? She may have another slant on things. Might have some interesting stories of her own to tell. Barbara, don't mean to be rude, but I am going to have to log off now, as I have just been reminded that the computer is not just for my use !!! Teenagers....... !!!!!! Catch up with you tomorrow? Have a great day.
no problem ...
see ya later.
Nic - Going through these names you guys mentioned brings back a lot of memories. I remember all of them. I remember I had a major crush on Paula Wallace (anybody know where she is????). I got my first serious kiss from Vivienne Stanbridge. Kevin Laubser used to work for De Beers as far as I can remember. I don't know if you guys remember the Warren Summers incident - sies. I remember things about Stephen Brownless I would rather not repeat. I last saw Delia Munn when I was in High School, she was a drum majorette (wow what a sight) and I played in a high school band. Anybody know anything about Alyson Bennet - I'm sure you do Nic (nudge nudge say no more say no more). I definitely remember Stephen Hodgeson, we were good friends, I also remember his sister Jackie (wow). Wayne Boltman used to live in Goodwood, Cape Town but has probably moved by now. Do you recall a girl by the name of Sharon Justice (daughter of Ernie), I would love to see her again. I'll see if I can find my photographs and post it on the site.
See ya
Patrick McCarthy
Patrick, whoa boy
Alison Bennett is in Cape Town, my mom sees her mom Ina, regurlarly, generally returning with all manner of news about O/M births deaths and other interesting stuff, whoosh. Anyway ali is married and mother to two kids, big age gap.
Your boet i have memories off, visiting our house for coffee.
Hey Patrick, glad to see you can recall some of the incidences way back when. Warren Summers ... Not quite sure which incident you are referring to here, as there were so many. I am almost certain I know what incident you are referring to re: Steven Brownless. Delia Munn as a drum majorette, what a sight that must have been? ...... Gone weak at the knees just thinking about her .... Man, she was STACKED. I remember Sharon Justice well ..... She was pretty hot also. Wouldn't mind "Bumping" into her again myself Ha Ha. Sounds like we are going through a mid - life crisis hey? Do you remember Mrs.Swart? We always used to ask her if she took SALUSA 45. Shame, she was only in her late twenties I think. I think Karma is paying us back now. Ha Ha.
Oh yes, I still remember Alison Bennett ............ EISH!!! ( My wife is probably going to want to know what the "nudge, nudge, wink wink was all about" ).Glad to know she is well and a mother now. Barbara, would you be able to get a message to her? Please tell her we send a big hello!! Cheers.
Patrick, do you remember when we got totally wasted in my pondok and decided to take a ride into town on our bikes? That must have been a sight to behold.
Do your uncle and aunty still live in Parrow?
Nicki,
It is done.
I thank you kindly,Barbara!!
nicky/patrick - sharon justus lives in table view - see her around quite a lot - her oldest daughter goes to rustenburg girls high and her youngest is at the same primary school as my daughter in t view. her and Hoddy (steven hodgson) were living together for quite a while (± 2/3 yrs ago) - used to see them both at school PTA's etc. but they're not together anymore.
hi barbara. all these names. i left namibia in 1979 and haven' realy been in kontakt. at least not for the past 25 years. steven hucker rip? what happened? he was a wild guy. very loud. just lived down the road. every time i see a pic. of eric clapton it reminds me of his dad. i remember he loved boozing.
vivianne. i think she had polio. always wonderd what kind of "cure" she might have had. i remember almost all you guys mentioned in this chat. it's a dream come true.
sorry for my english. i've spent the last almost 30 years in germany.
Georg
Vivienne did have calipers on her legs don't think it was polio
More likely hip displasia - which in those days took years to realign
Her legs didn't appear to have shown signs of polio later in life. May be wrong ?
Stephan Hucker sadly committed suicide at a young age, I think I was still at school, so 17 or 18 making it 1980 or 81
maybe Nicki can fill us in.
Hi Patrick
Debbie here Paulas sister she is living in Canada, I am hoping to get her and the rest of the gang registered soon
Debbe
Hey Nick
you have to go back to your profile and add your date of birth boet, for it to appear on calendar
Hi there Barbara,
I never was the sharpest knife in the drawer, was I? Thanks for that, long lost sister.
No prob, I had to read the Help page to get it.
Hows the mood in Australia following the RWC
Personally Barbara, I have never gloated so much in my life Ha Ha. Believe it or not, most of the Aussies, although pissed off big time that they were sent home early, were actually supporting the Boks. They obviously hate England more, for destroying their dreams twice in a row. I still get reminded quite regularly however of that terrible day last year when the Boks went down 49 - 0 to those cocky Wallabies ..... ouch, that still hurts so much, but the world cup win has certainly dulled the pain. GO BOKKE !!!!!
jarra jarra, so what - if they beat us last year - we got the cup.
and we know that means every thing.
By the way ----so it really is your birthday tomorrow SATURDAY -
:auguri1: MANY HAPPY RETURNS YOU HAVING A braai THEN AND BierSuip .............
WHILE I FREEZE OVER HERE, :natale3:
Aw shucks .... thanks for the B/day wishes Barbara. Yeah, the braai should be smokin and the BierSuip should be flowing if not tonight, then certainly tomorrow!! Summer has finally arrived in Perth. We're expecting 36 Degrees tomorrow, and 37 on Monday. Not much of a birthday so far .... spent most of the morning visiting some turf farms, as I am having the front lawn replaced. Quite a few different varieties out there. It's the first deal for a long long time that I have done regarding GRASS LOL. ( I did ask if they had any Durban Poison, but just got a few blank looks. HeHe). I hope it's not too cold on that island that you live on. What sort of heating do you have?
Hey did you try the Malawi Gold variety - LOL.
We have a statue in the garden and she's the only stoned one around our neighbourhood.
Luckily this house is well insulated, so the gas central heating set at 18 degrees works well.
We do have heavy drapes (curtains) and thick woolie socks, hot water bottles and whiskey.
Dressing to go out in this weather at night is a problem for me as I want to put woolies, gloves, scarfs etc on but when you get indoors of resturants and clubs you need to shed everything and most girls look like they just come from the beach - I haven't work out the layering procedure to look chic. Hahaha
Ah well fun fun fun I'll have one for you later
Hey Barbara, I notice below your avitar the words " Blue skies make me happy" You would be one happy little "vegiemite" if you ever moved to Oz, as blue skies are pretty much the daily routine here. The daily Summer weather forecast goes something along these lines .... Tomorrow will be HOT, ****ing HOT, or EXTREMELY ****ing HOT :caldo1: with clear blue skies. I worked with a Pommy bloke a few years back, and he said that his family actually became depressed due to the lack of actual weather. He started missing those notorious English winters. You do get used to it though. Awesome party weather however ...
In fear of this turning into another Horticultural thread, I shall have to refrain from entering into any discussion on "Happy Cabbage". :buffo1:
:auguri1:
Happy Birthday Nicky.
Hope you have a good day and can you bottle some of that grab beach and send it over to England.
Barbara Eia (Brownless)
Hi Barbara.
Are you related to Steven Brownless?
Hi Georg Jnr
Yes i am, he is my jounger brother. Were you at school with him
I think he was one year below me. I just remember him being quite popular.
Back in the 70s...
Happy Birthday fellow Scorpian. SCORPIO RULES numberone
Hi Nicky. Hang over from your birthdayparty?
Thanks for the B/day wishes Barbara and Diana. I am sorry to say that it was one of the crappiest B/days I've had in years, with heavy emphasis on the "CRAP" bit.Unfortunately, I picked up a stomach virus of some sort, and have been projectiling from both ends so to speak.( Is this a little too much information?) LOL. It was only a 24 hour thing, but I haven't been able to touch food or drink since Saturday evening. So to answer your question Georg, no I didn't have an actual hangover, but had all the symptoms of one.
So I see you too are a Scorpio Diana?........ Beware the sting .... Go the Scorps .....
Hey Barbara, what's Steven up to these days? I remember he left for the UK to take up a position with the local constabulary. Did he pursue this line of work? Does he still reside in the UK? Your Dad Stan used to play bridge with my my Dad occasionally. Does he still play?
I would love to have bottled up half our temperature today and sent it over to you Barbara, as it was a real scorcher. We hit 39.8 degrees, which was the hottest November day since 1913 apparently. February is traditionally our hottest month, so a HOT Summer is on the cards guess.
Looks like a " Scorpio Nest" here
Well .....equal weapons that is :tifo1:
Hi Nicky
I am another fellow scorpion. Sorry to here you were not well on you B'day, hope you have recovered.
Steven is still in the UK and so am I. He did not persue that career, he went into be a chef but that got in the way of his rugby......he was a good ruby player, only gave up because of age. He now cycles and has done the 3 peaks 3 times already. He is the manager of a roofing company and doing very well.
Dad remembers your Dad very well, he was his bridge partner. Dad doesn't play bridge anymore, He sends his regards
G'day Barbara,
Thanks for that update on Steven. Tell him Howzit when you next see him, and regards to your Dad also.
Avagoodie.
Hey Nicky, happy birthday mate..... I bought me a case of that Aussie stuff Fosters down in CapeTown, They had a special running a case of 330ml x 24 and 2 free Australian glasses for R104.00...thought it was a bargains at 4.9% alc/vol
:emot19:
Anyhow I drank one case down there and brought one back for the braai 2morrow....I;ll have one on you then...
:emot182:
Hi Mike, just back in time for Paula, who arrives back in the UK tomorrow. At least you wont have her creeping up on you in the Spar I beleive the Aussies won't drink Fosters. Is this true Nicky????
Hi Julie and Mike,
How are you both? You are absolutely spot on there Julie, we have lived in Oz now for about 15 years, and I am yet to see an Aussie drink the stuff. They seem to drink anything from VB (Victorian Bitter), Emu to Tooheys and anything in between, but no Fosters. It's really wierd hey, I mean everyone has this perception of an Aussie having a Fosters in one hand, putting a shrimp on the barbie with the other. I actually drink Kilkenny, but was recently told by an Irishman that it is really not that popular back in Ireland .... same story, I guess.
Mike, I hope you enjoy the ales ... BierSuip
Hi Hicky.
Thanks for your mail. Nice family you have. You've been arround.
Give me some time and you'll hear from me too.
@ Paula....bring it on sister........ As you see I managed to avoid you for a whole week in the shop and even skipped the country when my informed me that you were lurking around the store...
:emot19:
@ Nicky, what I do when I go on leave, is purchase a variety of foreign beers, take them back to the flat, sit on the balcony overlooking the strand beach and have a few sundowners.... funny enough Killkenny was also in the mix, Mind you so was Guiness and Stella Artois and Kingfischer from India..... like trying out the foreign Brew Bru.
@Julie ... I braaied today, but lay off the Aussie beer, only had 2 Stella Artois and Some foreign Pilsner, mixed with 2 Indian beers..... i had twinges of gout, so thought it best to lay low.....

mr Esterhuizen was our PT teacher. Blond fellow. His pal was the Afrikaans with dark hair and moustache. Can't remember his name. i remember several pupils having black and blue legs the size of his gisant hands from his hitting. Took long brefore sdomeone dealt with the two of them.
Esterhuizen would even hit everybody in the class if he couldn't make out who wass naughty. Methods usualy used in the army or in prison.
Hi Georg
The big teacher was Mr Koch. Think he gave Maths or something.
Quote from: Sheena on December 06, 2007, 12:07:31 PM
Hi Georg
The big teacher was Mr Koch. Think he gave Maths or something.
hi Sheena. Don't know Mr. Koch. The fellow I mean must've had another name.
His classroom the room closest to the cycle stand. (or what's it called in english) You know the std 5 classes. Next to Mr. Dickinsons class. he gave us maths.
I remember Mr Koch, big guy, moustache, maths......
iknow
Michael, who do you think the other guy might be called that I meant? I think he had a Dutch name. Koch sounds to German.
Remember Mr Dickinson loved teaching maths with the help of an overhead projector and regularly sprayed and we would watch the bubble of spit on the screen? He was my maths teacher in 1975, Mr Heunis was my afrikaans teacher, Mr Zandhuis biology and science. Mrs O'Brian was the english teacher. I remember her hitting someone on the head with a bible. She was also in charge of the Oppenheimer singing for sports day. My sister and I were cheerleaders together 1974 and 1975. Mrs O'Brian used to conduct us with a lot of arm waving. Remember the talk she used to give us girls when we started std 5. We really had excellent, dedicated teachers. I loved growing up in Oranjemund, the only thing I didn't like was how class consious it was. The engineers etc had better houses, cars etc compared to the artisans. Always felt a bit like their children looked down on us. Did anyone else feel like that, or am I just imagining it?
Sorry Georg, I cannot help, we had a Mr Bergh, liked to klap you between the shoulder blades when you were'nt watching, Mr Cloete would moer you with the white pointer stick, the woodwork teacher also moered you with a plank, Mr Ferreira liked to squeeze your neck until you fainted, Juffrou Williams could pinch your shoulders till you cried..... COme to think of it , most of those teachers had a problem with corporal punishment.... no wonder most of us drink so much these days..... BierSuip
And Florrie, I agree with you, that was the one downside of Oranjemund, the Paterson grading kept people apart..... mine mentality......
Anyone remember the auditorium at OPS and the educational "films" we watched? The guy who did the "commentary" was so boring, would put us all to sleep. We would all emerge squeezing our eyes tight for the light when we led out back to class. Even at school everyone would race of the back row!
I do, what was the name of the cat in those traffic films we had to watch, and zappit in a Zibbi!
:emot19:
Yes Mike, I think you are right about reason for our excessive drinking. Those teachers were wicked. Very few actually treated us like human beings. Must stay I didnt like any of the male teachers except for Zandie and Mr Dickenson. Weirdo's! We shouldve sent them the therapy bills!
quickdop
Yip thats the one! Our kids would can themselves if they saw those today!! LOL
