Title: Independence Day Celebrations
Post by: Michele Alexander (Voden) on August 22, 2008, 06:28:57 PM
I decided to listen to my MP3 player whilst walking Shadow this evening and was pleasantly surprised when a song by Mango Groove came on - the cable is lost so haven't been able to add any new songs for ages, can't even remember putting Mango Groove on their either! Anyway - it brought back such fond memories of the Independence Celebrations in 1990. I was in Std 7 at Rhenish Girls High and even though school was only due to finish on the Thursday or Friday we were flown home on the Tuesday afternoon so that we could enjoy the celebrations. There was a huge stage put up on the hockey field and we were entertained by Mango Groove and some other band (for the life of me can't remember their name). It was amazing, I can remember the hockey field being full of people and on the outskirts of the field there were people with braai's and skottelbraai's.

Who else was there and are you also reminded of this occassion whenever you hear a song by Mango Groove?

I remember those celebrations - after 4 days of solid partying, when it was finally time to come down to earth and join the real world once again, i noticed that my ankle was flippin' painful - blue and swollen, couldn't put any weight on it - i couldn't figure out what the hell had happened - racking my brain, sifting through all the events of the past few days, slowly hazy memories started floating back to me and then i remembered i had stood on an empty beer bottle lying on the field - my ankle must've gone one way and my body the other - 6 weeks of physiotherapy - torn ligament.............but yah, it was a good celebration and i cannot hear mango groove without Nam's independence coming back to me.  I still have a bottle of champagne that was specially made for that occasion with Nam's flag and independence date on the label.
