Post by: Michael Alexander on August 31, 2008, 04:21:32 PM
In all honesty I lost the post where we discussing the films that were made of the awesome plays that were put on byOPS....recently my curiosity was expanded with the visit of John an Leila,,,,, once agian on one of those famous "kitchen" nights in Oranjemund , the topic of the play films came to light..... after much thought, I remembered I had the email to ol' (with the utmost respect sir!)  Zandy, the old Daleian that he is...., So I emailed him our problem..... here is the reply...

"Dear Michael,

Thanks for the email. I can just imagine all the chatter that went on around the kitchen table !!! Oranjemund will always have a bonding factor. Those of us who lived there will always cherish the memories. I  have fond memories of Leila. She was on the staff at O.P.S when I first started teaching at the school in 1968 !!!
O.P.S produced some amazing plays and concerts during the 60's and 70's. I have vivid memories of the exceptionally high standard. The costumes of the players were always amazing. Tinka Castle was always the organiser of this department and she only expected the highest of standards. I think Leila always gave her tremendous support.
These earlier productions were filmed, I think by the projectionist at the local cinema, Mr Hans Meyer and Don Wilson, the husband of Sybil Wilson who was on the staff. I saw some of the films remembering one that our elder daughter played a part as Little Bo Peep . The films  ( 16mm ) were stored in the dark room next to the library. Michael you took a picture of this room when you enrolled your son, Cameron at " big school " The r
eels were stored in tin casings on the top shelf in the dark room. I have no knowledge as to what happened to them. After the completion of the " new block " on the old rugby field most of equipment etc was moved. Have just spoken to Noreen Ackerman ( Coffin ) to jolt her memory. She recalls seeing these films, but has no idea as to what happened to them.
If you do contact Leila again and if she is coming down our way please give her our telephone no ********** as Budgie and I would love to see them again.
Keep up the fantastic work. I really enjoy your website."
