I have been asked by a concerned resident to post the following!
"PLACE THE TARRING OF THE PROPOSED ROAD BETWEEN US AND ROSH PINAH ON THE FORUM - iIS it just talk again - We oranjemunders want to know when and where the road will be?? GIVE US DATES AND TAKE ACTION - "
What I heard on this issue from a friend in a Government dept that he was at a meeting last week with stakeholders..... and that if a road had to be built, it would not be feasable to run a brand new road through the dunebelt to Rosh Pinah.....This would also look "ugly" in the future Sperrgebiedt National park...So the current road would need to be used...However, a point that he brought up at the meeting was..... is it really viable to tar a road to Oranjemund with the envisaged decrease in the towns population.... there is no growth factor here...the other point which he made, was that for any road to be viable, you need the road to carry a minimum of 250 cars a day, 365 days a year.... and thats the minimum.... We don't get that..... the other point was roads are extremely expensive to build.... where would the funding come from... and any project of this nature would take at least 7 years.........
However, he was reprimanded and told that this project should go ahead, as the politicians wanted it..... even if it was not viable....
Thats what I have heard on this issue.....
OK Port Nolloth is in RSA... you wanna tell me that 250 cars a day 365 days a year use the road to the Port...!!! Oh yes... 7 years!!! who built the Port road, under 2 years if I'm not mistaken. I won't say too much about Holgat culvert, but then again $#!t happens...
A big hurdle in the Rosh Pinah road is the section at Jakkalsberg, where the road is wedged between the "mountain" and the river. I heard mention that the road would go around the back of the hills. I guess the "greenies" are not too chuffed about that idea.

Ok being the Rosh pinah connection on this forum and knowing who I do in this town I can tell you this I spoke to the nature people here the other day and this is what is happening. For you who are familiar with Rosh pinah the road from town to the Pont crossing (Orange River) is already paid for and will be tarred before the end of the year. A gravel road already exists between Rosh pinah and skilpadberg. However they have been conducting surveys as to the possibilities of a road through the middle of the desert they however concluded that it is too expensive and would consist of a massive mountain pass. The north bank road between sendlingsdrift and Oranjemund will be tarred following its current course the narrow mountain sections along the river will be reinforced and elevated so that floods do not affect it. The building of the road will take into consideration the mining activities along its route and there could be gravel detours from time to time so that mining can continue.
...and who is paying for this? What is the timeframe? idontknow
Next year is when it should start, not sure who is paying for it but I do know that Namibian nature conservation will be recieving the money Namdeb generates from is scrapping and recycling efforts being conducted in MA1 at the moment. That could possibly fund the road.The planned tourism for this area makes it viable for the road to be tarred!
I think tarring this kind of road for tourism is not a great idea.... This wild, and vast Namibia for a tourist is about driving those long dusty dirt tracks to see the wild west show.... if i wanted a tarred road on my holiday I would vist the Rufs on their autobahn!
