Totally unnecessary, and he'll probably tell people he's a hunter? Bull - he had a vehicle, gun, etc to mow down a defenseless animal. Coward! If he wanted to prove his manhood by killing the beast, we should put them together in a cage and see who survives! Bertie, I could not have said it better! I accept hunting .... if it is for the right purpose - to use the meat to eat. These dumb .. &%)@*)s stuff that animal - what for. The way I look at this lepoard is that he most likley was the prime male in the area - now they upset the whole nature thing by allowing a male with maybe not so good gene pool to mate with the females .... The Polar bear story was back in the early 90's....
Mike came back to town last year...then awoke me from my slumber to open the shop at 10hoo cause he needed fresh cream for meob bay trip....in return he had to shower with me with free beer at the angling club that night.,.... little did he realize how much beer this Namibian can consume..... I have no problem with anyone hunting for food and actually enjoy venison.
The indigenous people had a real relationship with the wild animals and only killed to eat or prove their manhood & courage.
I say if you want to hunt Lion & leopards etc, do so on foot, on your own and with only a bow or a spear and lets see how many of there "hunters" then have the balls to to take up the challenge

The lepoard in my eye is the most beautifull cat in nature - did you know that it is the only big cat that can actually purr like a housecat. Lions and cheetahs cannot purr. I so would love to get a hold of those two poepolle on the pic. For sure their names will also appear in the Guiness World Record Book.... for most "gebliksemde" guys !
Well said, Dalene. I'll join you, we can do our own barbaric hunting on those a$$holes. You know, I have more admiration when I see a photograph of a majestic animal like that, being happy and proud in his natural environment. The time, effort and skill involved in taking a perfect live picture outweighs the trophy picture 100 times! And to know that it's part of the earth's ecosystem and just as important as us human beings, still alive and other people will still be able to experience his beauty as well. Seeing a photograph of a dead animal (killed by humans as a trophy or otherwise) is just sad and not necessary. Once again - I will never have any respect for such an idiot.
The days of classing something like this as a trophy are long gone. With the weapons that these "hunters" have at their disposal its a no contest and as such the result should never be termed a Trophy.
Now hunting with a camera (without all the specialised lenses for taking the long distance safe shots) thats a whole different story. Those photographers have to gain the animals trust and learn its habits before comming up with a real trophy shot. ( more power to them)
Remember a good couple of years ago, walking through the TSITSIKAMA forest (normal tourist attraction, namely big tree) and seeing a sign which read something like "take phographs and leave only your footprints"

Man charged with slaying zebras

Windhoek - A German aristocrat is scheduled to appear in court in Namibia on Thursday on suspicion of killing scores of endangered mountain zebras.
Christian Prinz zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg, 28, is alleged to have killed the animals at a private game reserve owned by his father 70 kilometres south-west of the capital Windhoek.
The zebras were allegedly slaughtered between 2001 and 2005 and their carcasses buried on the farm. It was not clear whether they were used for meat or for their skins.
A local farmer alleged the actual number of zebras killed by zu Hohenlohe totalled several hundred.
Police and Namibian wildlife protection officials had merely dug up 193 as a sample, Namibia's German-language Allgemeine Zeitung reported on Wednesday.
Under Namibian law, hunters may only kill eight mountain zebras a year, provided they have a permit.
Zu Hohenlohe's father Max Gottfried Prinz zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg bought the farm in 1982. The farm was declared bankrupt earlier this year.
The case will be heard in a magistrate's court in the town of Rehoboth.
Mountain zebras are native to south-west Africa.
There are two subspecies of mountain zebras. The equus zebra is endangered and the equus zebra hartmannae is threatened.

Leopard hunt condemned in SA

THE killing of what was probably the biggest leopard in Namibia in September has also been condemned in South Africa.
Reports say e-mails have been circulating in South Africa, condemning the killing of the leopard.
Giel de Kock, a former game warden in Namibia, was quoted by the South African Sunday newspaper Rapport as saying it was tragic that the leopard was shot, especially because of its extraordinary size.
De Kock argued that all predators are in competition with farming.
"Could it not have been better managed so that tourists could come and admire the animal in its natural environment," he was quoted as saying.
The same paper quoted South African conservationist Quinton Martins, the project manager at The Cape Leopard Trust, as saying removing predators such as leopard from their natural environment because of conflict with livestock farmers can have a detrimental effect on predator populations.
The South African condemnation of the killing of the leopard came after some readers of The Namibian last month expressed their disgust at the killing of such a magnificent animal in SMS messages sent to the newspaper.
The 82-kg leopard was shot and killed by American trophy hunter Brad Smith at the farm Gurub in the Khomas Hochland in September.
The big cat, which was about 10 years old and 2,2 metres long, was ranked the eight largest trophy of its species by Safari Club International, an international body of trophy hunters.
Professional hunter Gerard Erasmus of Sumsare Safaris, who led the leopard hunt, defended the killing of the leopard by claiming it was a problem animal.
Erasmus claimed that the leopard had killed over 50 calves in the area.
He said the leopard was killed legally as the hunter had a permit to kill it.
Approached for comment on the South African outrage at the shooting of the leopard, Director of Parks and Wildlife Management Ben Beytell said there was nothing wrong with killing the leopard.
Beytell said the Ministry has a Cites quota of about 150 endangered animals a year that can be offered to trophy hunters.
"The killing of the leopard does not pose any risks for the species," said Beytell.
In Namibia, the leopard is a specially protected species and can only be hunted with a permit.
It is listed on Cites Appendix I, a list of animals and plant species that are threatened with extinction.
Trade in specimens of these species is permitted only in exceptional and carefully controlled circumstances.
This is inevitably what happens when humans encroach on their habitat. It's 100% a man made problem. The leopard was there first, then came the farmer with his menu of juicy young calves. A guaranteed recipe for conflict.

I have always had a serious problem with these big game hunters who get some thrill when they kill a magnificent animal with a high powered rifle from about half a kilometer away. What chance does the animal stand. Why does the hunter not move to within say 50 meters of the prey and then see who comes off best. Now that would be a challenge.
