Was'nt it cool to have a proper swing in your garden, the type that got cemented into the ground..... wow your own personal swing.... no more park for me, or so you thought, all our friends had their own swings, and no matter how much we pleaded with dad, just wait , just wait..... I think I was about 17 when we got our swing..... Grrr! a bit late....... ;)
i was at norman buckleys house, next door to aunty flora frys,he had the makings of a swing, cemented poles and all, alas no f***** rope,so as we always did,we improvised ,to my cost.we got an old oil drum and tried to stand on it ,jump to see who could hang onto the swing bars, great the first few times, time to up the anti and move the oil drum a few feet backwards, youve quessed the rest, aunty flora to the rescue, missed the bar ,got flipped, stait on my back, thought i was gonna die, badly winded, with the loveing care of aunty flora, and some of her lovely cakes,im here to tell the tale, thank you from the bottom of my heart aunty flora xx
never mind swings, Lynette Bezuidenhout had parrellel bars proper in her garden.
for gymnastic practice. sooo cool, and her mom was a Joan Biaz fan.
Hey Barbara, any idea where Lynette is these days? Her Mom ran the Dry Cleaners for years. Do you know if the Dry Cleaners still operate ..... If not, what is the building used for these days? Anyone?
Andre Bezuidenhout, is still here and runs a very successful engineering business.. I bashed into his mom and dad, in the museum last week, Pete and Marlene.
The old Dry Cleaners is now housing a private cleaning company, and the laundry opposite the library, is a private concern, run by Riana Lamont.
:D
I remember Andre as just a lighty. It's amazing how everyone has " grown up ". As they say, today's youth are tomorrow's leaders!!! Cheers for that info Mike.
Warning this topic has not had a reply for over 120 days,
well I got a picture of myself and Sheila on our garden swing
proper it was.
Barbara, outta curiousity, what address was that pic taken at?
idontknow
E4/4
but I don't think it's still there. It was on the left as you went through the gate at the front.
E4-4th next to the alley... ran past it everyday in the 70's....
yea, but you never stopped to say hi
... that was because the garden/house was always full of giggling girls.... we were first avenue bush boys.... you guys were way to sophisticated for us..... :ciupa1:
Don't tell lies Mike - you were in too much of a hurry running to our house....... bling1
...and that's exactly why we hung out with the Leprechauns on 7th.... swink
Hehehehe bravo the leprechauns always had a supply of sausage rolls........
I remember we had massive acrobatic poles in our garden, 26/13th. They were shaped like a swing only cemented into the ground and very industrial looking. Perhaps someone can shed some light as to how and why the got to be there? My Dad had a helleva job getting them out.
My dad put up a proper swing in our garden in 5 o/c - it was in the sandpit which he built - the real makoy swing, like the ones in the parks. We had many awesome days swinging away on that swing. It was a rubber swing and one day Alison Bennett and I were standing on each end seeing how high we could go - we were pretty high and as we came down through the poles, the one chain snapped - i hung on for dear life, my head connected the pole as we swung through, I dropped, got up and ran to the bathroom only to see this huge appearing egg on my head - my screams brought my sister linda running, she grabbed me, put me on the back of her bicycle and raced up 7th avenue to my mom's office, me screaming my lungs out on the carrier with her shouting "delia, please dont die, please dont die". It must've been quite a sight to see for any onlookers..............
Ah Delia, what an excellent story - I know I shouldn't as I'm sure it was a serious bang but I'm laughing out loud
No probs Rhona, it's cool, we still laugh about it today. Didn't quite get to finish the story yesterday, boss walked in, had to log off (I surf at work)...........the worst part was when we walked into my mom's office, she was working in the typing pool, all the women burst out laughing at this HUGE egg sticking out between my fringe - geez, was i pissed.......anyway, my mom took me to the doctor and he wanted to keep me in overnight for observation......not a damn was i staying in hospital so the doc said to my mom "okay, but just watch her in case she goes funny".........looking back now, that was quite a broad statement........all us O'mund kids were "funny" in the head......my guardian angel must've been watching over me big time that day........the knock on the head missed my temple by inches and we all know what happens if you get clobbered hard enough on the temple.........obviously wasn't my time.
heres me on my swing ....my proper swing.......... :36_2_35:
Nice pic Bev.
Is that your Kitchen window? There were only a few models of houses, and our house had a "corner" like that which meant you'd be looking at the kitchen window.
No, that looks more like the dining room window. If that's the case, then there would be 2 more windows to the right, that were the bedrooms.
That's true Patricia. But the foto just seems to be ending at the kitchen window.
Bev ... help us out here ... put us out of our misery pls
I think your house was built something like the way you described it Patricia?
You guessed it ... it looks just like our house in 3rd ave
That ain't the kitchen window... thats the 3rd window in the lounge, often where one would find the dining room table in the lounge.... that is a T shaped house as opposed to the I shaped house.... on any street you would have a T then an I a T then and I and so on and so on......
Yeh baby ... same as our first house in Oranjemund ... grab
:culo1: SO WHATT! Just cos there's two of yer now?
:looser1: :looser1:
:emot19: :emot172:
you don't just happen to be Paula in disguise???
bling1 e154
calm down calm down......it was the living room window.....maybe the bit that was the dining room yes...kitchen was at the other side..........here a pic of the house too, the swing was at the back of the hedge ............would luuuurrrvvveee to see a photo of this house now, but no one takes any notice of me :emot78:
I have the same problem Bev.
ALFRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Camera...go .....!
swink
and I also had a swing (E5/11) Mom,(Elsie) and Irene testing it and me sulking on the side.
:-) Seems as if everyone is showing their swing and therefore decided to show mine :emot172:
Its a pic of Ricky Tamblyn (Trish & Leon's son) on our swing that we had in our garden. I wonder if its still there ......
Yea that swing. We kept trying to do a 360 on it and my dad was forever repairing the chain supports. Incidently, that's our famous tree stump in the background shortly after it was cut down. It was the highest tree in OM at the time. The crack in the fence by the way is not related to DUI...hee hee During the removal of the tree branches, one of the CDM owambos misjudged the stopping distance of his company car.
