Was watching the new found Nostradamus documentary on discovery the other night.... according to a few experts..... Life on earth as we know it will end sometime in 2012...... something catastrophic is going to happen..... I thought ...YAWN! Blah blah! another nutter...however it made me think twice when it turned out that the year 2012 is also mentioned in the Mayan calendar and some other historical text as the end of days..... Just hope that the rugby season concludes before the end of days happens.... Go Cheetahs!~ (the golden idols we all worship) msn emoticon (9)
According to the Mayan calendar, supposed to be 21 Dec 2012, but I will believe it when I see it. There are always doomsayers predicting the end of the world and it never happens. If it does, I am happy to go, just as long as my kids don't suffer in the process.
If it does happen, then there is nothing that anybody can do about it, so why the heck worry about it. Old Nostradamus could have been wrong in his calculations and it could happen tonight or tomorrow or next week - I am of mind that my body can only truly die just once, no matter what the cause. People around us die every day - for them it is the end of this here world.... What your believes about the afterlife is, is mainly what causes the most worries with people ... each to his/her own in that regard. I for sure am not going to sit around watching the skies or the oceans till then to see what may happen to our mother earth and all her stalkers - no, I want to live every day that is granted to me to the fullest.
21st of December you say......uhm! I just hope the SPringboks have finished playing all their overseas tour games by then....
The "KING PROTEA'S" Michael.......hier kom die protea's, hier kom die proteas ah la la la ah la la la.
It just does'nt sound right...... Turkey affe-red
Michael, while watching an interview on this topic the other morning, I thought of how you might have reacted had you been watching! Some pseudo intellectual was suggesting that the colours of the Springbok on the jersey should be those of the national flag; "Why was it ORANGE?" was what worried him most! (I was watching TV2).
Saw a letter sent into the Namibian Newspaper this week, wantinf to know why nobody else was worried about End Of Days....
Here;s a link to more about 2012 and the end of days... for those of you who might be interested..

Agree with Dalene .. whatever happens , its beyond our control , for now we just live our lives to the fullest ... each disaster we watch on the news is a universe event .. one day we watching a disaster somewhere on the globe with loss of life , the surviviors picking up the pieces ... tomorrow somebody could be watching it play out with us .and we have to be strong enough to pick up the pieces ,,,
End of days is around the corner..... we know that the earth has been struck a number of times by asteroids and the likes thereof.....
So what if the Mayans are right, what if the asteroids are heading back to this part of our solar system .... after all the Mayans were experts in astronomy....
here is an article that excited the astrological world.... an asteroid the size of the pacific ocean crashed into the southern part of jupiter......
Are we next? The solar eclipse that occured in asia yesterday, also was known by ancient folklore as a sign that there is great change on the way.....
" Astronomers were scrambling to get big telescopes turned to Jupiter on Tuesday to observe the remains of what looks like the biggest smashup in the solar system since fragments of the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 crashed into the planet 15 years ago.
Something — probably a small comet — smacked into Jupiter on Sunday, leaving a bruise the size of the Pacific Ocean near its south pole. Just after midnight, Australian time, Jupiter came into view in the eyepiece of Anthony Wesley, an amateur astronomer in Murrumbateman, Australia. The planet was bearing a black eye spookily similar to the ones left in 1994.
"This was a big event," said Leigh Fletcher of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a NASA lab technician in Pasadena, Calif. "In the inner solar system it would have been a disaster."
Wesley, a 44-year-old computer programmer from the village north of Canberra, made the discovery "using his backyard 14.5-inch reflecting telescope," according to the Sydney Morning Herald. (For the record, 14.5 inches is the diameter of the telescope's mirror inside. His "back yard" telescope is taller than he is.) The paper explained: "Wesley, who has been keen on astronomy since he was a child, said telescopes and other astronomy equipment were so inexpensive now that the hobby had become a viable pastime for just about anybody. His own equipment cost about $10,000."
Glenn Orton, a scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said, "It could be the impact of a comet, but we don't know for sure yet."
Astronomers admit they might never know for sure. "It's like throwing a stone on the pond," Fletcher said. "You see the splash, but lose the stone. It's the splash we can study."
Fletcher said that he and his colleagues were frantically writing proposals for telescope time. Among the telescopes they have recruited is the Hubble Space Telescope, making its early return to the fray after a successful repair mission by astronauts this summer.
The discovery began as a routine night-gazing exercise. Wesley pointed his new telescope to the cosmos and started snapping images.
Conditions weren't ideal and when the sky got murkier, Wesley almost quit.
Instead, he took a half-hour break to watch sports on TV. When he peered back into the telescope, he noticed a curious black spot on Jupiter.
Was it a moon or a shadow? Can't be, he thought.
Wesley checked images that he took just two days earlier and found no sign of the spot.
Was Jupiter struck by something?
"I had no real idea, and the odds on that happening were so small as to be laughable, but I was really struggling to see any other possibility given the location of the mark," he wrote in an online posting. "If it really was an impact mark, then I had to start telling people, and quickly."
Wesley fired off an e-mail to a group of amateur and professional astronomers, among them Fletcher and Orton, who was preparing to look at Jupiter using NASA's infrared telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. He confirmed Wesley's finding.
Images released by NASA show the impact occurred near the south pole and caused debris to fly into the upper atmosphere. The scar is pale-looking from the reflection of debris.
Jupiter is 1,400 times larger than Earth. At its closest, Jupiter is about 390 million miles from Earth, four times as far as the Earth is from the sun.
Franck Marchis, an astronomer at the SETI Institute and the University of California at Berkeley, said the shape of the debris splash as revealed in Keck II telescope images suggested that whatever hit Jupiter might have been pulled apart by tidal forces from the planet's huge gravity before it hit. In an e-mail message, he said humans should be thankful for Jupiter.
"The solar system would have been a very dangerous place if we did not have Jupiter," he wrote. "We should thank our giant planet for suffering for us. Its strong gravitational field is acting like a shield protecting us from comets coming from the outer part of the solar system."

Sorry that I am harping on about this, it fascinates me..... here is another interesting link:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/721500/posts
Interesting and frightening.....
Amazing. But like the last line in the article reads - we can thank Jupiter. It is so much bigger than our little marble, that most threats from outer space would rather be pulled towards it, and save our buts in the process.
Well it will happen one day ... its happened before ,, sometimes not enough to shape the destiny of planet earth but in the turbulent times of universe creation lots happened ,, all that is needed is a shift in the workings of the universe and we could find ourselves in the path of lots of big chunks of rock ... again I say .. we see disasters play out ... next time around it can be us ...
So drink all the red drinking-41wine.......

The Mayans didn't predict the end of the world as in BOOM it's gone, they predicted "the end of the world AS WE KNOW IT" - according to them the earth will tilt on it's axis on 21 Dec 2012 - almost as though Gaia (Mother Earth) will be giving a huge "shrug" to rid herself of all the toxins that have been thrown her way by mankind resulting in the axial shift followed by...........well, we can all guess what the result will be of the earth shuddering........tidal waves, volcanic explosions, etc. After that, a clean Mother Earth ready to once more provide for her children who will hopefully have learnt thru the experience that what you give out (destruction) is what you get back. The Mayans were highly evolved astrologers and mathematicians who could read the heavens/stars with expert precision.
Yes Delia, I agree. If there's any ancient civilization I would believe, it would be the Mayans.
The swinging of the earth on its axis is due anyway.
Read a book on the Mayan Calendar & 2012 - very hard to find, almost out of print, a friend of mine got it in from the States. Very heavy book, full of mathematical & astrological equations as to how they derived at their predictions - skipped those, way over my head - but in there the Mayans stated that this cosmic event will be preceded by, among other things, weird weather patterns - we just have to look at the weird weather happening all over the planet in recent years - heavy rains & flooding in places that have never known floods, tsunamis, out of control fires ravaging everything in their path, snow in countries that have never known snow, winters getting colder, summers getting hotter, heat waves on one side of a country with cold spells on the other side at the same time - basically just weird f..ked up weather patterns. This whole thing also has something to do with the raising of the consciousness on the planet. Something to think about.
I have a pdf of that book, I think it was a john Grau that wrote it... anyhow lets go with the earth tilting on it's axis theory...
"
The HAB Theory has an immediately disturbing hypothesis. There may be a simple, if catastrophic, explanation to the 5,000-12,000 year intervals between Ice Ages.
I found the concept in the book so intriguing, and the facts presented in its support so fascinating, that I took the time to scan, OCR and quickly proof some of the passages from the book that are used to support The HAB Theory. I present them here so that any similarly fascinated reader may enumerate the claims made in the book and independently research them. Similarly, if anyone wishes to trim the elements of plot which remain in this lengthy excerpt and present a concise listing of claims which may have come from actual work done in the sciences of archeology and geology; and post them on the nets others will have a tool to research these claims.
In The HAB Theory the proposition is put forth that the earth falls over on it's side or "capsizes'' about every 3,000 - 7,100 years. That is to say that about every 5,000 years, during a period of about 12 hours, the land that was under the North and South poles move from the cold point at the earth's axis of spin to a point in the tropics. This startling phenomena occurs because of the accumulated weight of the ever-growing polar ice caps.
If you recall that the physical axis of the North and South poles is not exactly at the same place as the magnetic North and South poles are; if you recall that the Earth "wobbles'' on it's axis, and that the wobble has been shown to be getting wider; perhaps you will find a reason to wonder if the "HAB Theory'' is all fiction or.....?
According to the "HAB'' theory, during these capsizing, the earth's axis shifts from what starts as the North and South poles to a point that was approximately 10 degrees North/South latitude, with the former poles now well within the tropics. The "HAB'' theory postulates that this is not a gradual movement over centuries, but a sudden shift taking only half a day. Pause a moment and imagine the tidal, weather and seismic implications of such a movement.
The "HAB'' theory states that these capsizing take place every 4,000-5,500 years and that it has been 5,600 years since the last one, so we are now badly overdue, and that of course creates a nice dramatic tension in the book.
The "HAB'' theory is fed by the same scientific factoids as another book released about the same time that got a lot more attention: "Chariots of the Gods.'' In HAB, these same factoids and others, suggest that advanced civilizations have flourished and died off on the earth several times during these 5,000 year intervals.
The book is a good page turner although the early 70's love lives of the characters is now politically quite incorrect and/or boring depending on your point of view. Half of the book is filled with the love lives of the leading characters, but the other half contains a long list of scientific anomalies which may be better explained if the "HAB Theory'' were true.
Because a lot of plot comes through in the scanned segments below a quickie plot synopsis is in order:
*
Herbert Allan Boardman (the HAB of the book's title) is an educated man, 94 years old, who completes a successful, if unspectacular, career as an Electrical Engineer.
*
He refines his theory of the capsizing earth, and collects a mountain of evidence to support it. However, since he has an MS in Electrical Engineering and not a PhD in geology, archeology, or anthropology; and because he is neither a compelling writer or speaker, nobody pays any attention to him except for one small article that gets published in an obscure journal that nobody reads. The isolation of modern scientists not paying much attention to developments or theories outside of their own disciplines is an interesting sub-plot to the book.
*
Now in his 90's, he knows he must take desperate action to get his theory the scientific scrutiny it deserves. To call maximum attention to himself, and by extension his theory, he gets in line to shake the hand of the President of the USA and shoots the president point blank in the forehead.... with a non-lethal wax bullet.
*
The wound is painful but does not break the skin, and Mr. Boardman survives his arrest. Boardman declines to say anything about Why He Did It to anyone except a noted investigative journalist, named Grant. The journalist gets the manuscript and buys into the potential accuracy of Boardman's theory, as does The President, who convenes a world symposium to discuss the matter and try to prove or disprove it's central concept - that the earth capsizes about every 4,500-5,500 years.
Many of the books factoids come to ink when the plot assembles the conference of world scientists to discuss factoids from various disciplines, and the author uses the vehicle of many different voices telling of unresolved mysteries and discoveries in all different parts of the earth, and tying them to the concept of prior civilizations of humans on earth that were destroyed in a capsizing.
An example is the commonality in a great many cultures of the legend of The Great Flood (Noah's Ark).
The time and effort has been invested to scan a great many passages of the book in order to select the more intriguing factoids for further research. I think it might be interesting to see if it can be determined whether many/any of the above mentioned scientific factoids actually exist.
Since this is a scanner based transcription, there will be various artifacts of scanning errors and scanner software spell- checking. Still, it's a pretty good way to get text into a computer without developing terminal carpal tunnel syndrome.
I've tried to clear out the dialogue related to plot and condense this file to mostly the references to science, although the book packages the factoids into conversations and news reports for the sake of maintaining a plot, so it will be difficult to clear it all away without a complete re-write.
It now seems appropriate to tantalize the reader with reasons to read this entire file, so here are a few concepts you'll find below:
*
Art-work of ancient South American civilizations which depict animals from the opposite side of the earth, or extinct for thousands of centuries
*
Tales of flying machines and the people who piloted them from ancient China.
*
An ancient Chinese legend that the entire country took one great leap towards the north and later took a great leap to the south.
*
All that we know about the Ancient Egyptian and Incan civilizations indicates that these civilizations were in decline from the oldest discovered artifacts to the artifacts discovered from the later dynasties.
*
Identical information-laden stone disks have been found at opposite sides of the earth in China and Peru.
*
Whole Wooly Mammoth's have been found frozen in Polar Ice packs. Some carcasses were fond whole and the flesh of these beasts were actually edible after being frozen for 7,000 years. Some have been found with a half-chewed mouth full of grass. Flash-frozen while eating lunch 7,000 years ago?
*
Maps of Africa, Australia and Asia from 1500 BC that appear to have been drawn from aerial views. Maps of Antarctica (Officially discovered only in the 1800's) showing mountains and shorelines buried under glaciers that we have only found in the last half of the 20th century via radar mapping."
It is said that when these catostrophic ( that is for humankind ) events will occur , those folk who have been observing learning about and practising the ancient mystic including honouring mothernature and mother earth Gaia will be guided to safer places where they will be able to survive and start a new consciousness .. pretty much a cyclical thing .. we have become so technology bound ,, the new age will be without the technology excepting the memory of how it served us and at the same time enslaved us and despite its convenience created a ever faster and dysfunctional life for humanity ... a sort of new beginning and then as the new survivors progress they will try to create the balance between the old and new ... Of course there are many religious groupings that arrogantly believe they are the chosen ones ,,, the "chosen" ones of the right unconscious consciousness will only know before the events occur and be insticntively guided ... thats the theory ... we await and see ... while any of us that end up floating in the ether will watch and realise ...
Hi Sandy,
You may be interested in the theory of Nemesis, the death star with an elliptical orbit in the galaxy that brings it close to our solar system every 26 million years or so. In doing so its huge gravitational pull wrenches numbers of asteroids out of their orbit and hurls them at the sun. Any planet, including Earth, that gets in the way is bound to collect one or more of these major impacts.
A study of asteroid impacts shows they are periodical and happen approximately every 26 million years. Our last major impact was 65 million years ago. Seems we are long overdue for the next. The link is via Google at www.perdurabo10.com/id736.html
Like Mike, my worry is that it might happen before the All Blacks flatten the Boks this weekend. That would be truly dreadful.

Mmm wonder who's gonna buy Franks zany invention ... catmusic ..
On that subject ,, I keep on getting via my email Bethea horoscope ,, its actually sometimes an amusement cos its so damm generic that any desperate soul can hook onto anything written and think it was written for them , the mind conveniently fitering out the stuff that does not apply ..
With this weekly thing comes the health wealth happiness offers ... well yes I do believe in symbolism , the power of faith ... but theres always the offer of some or other amulet that will bring the health wealth and happiness ... touting the value of each one and thats its a must have , a never to be misssed opportunity ... I get this vision of some poor soul weighed down with amulets , poor as a churchmouse having spent all money on them . the only person who is healthy wealthy and happy is the seller ..
Mmm maybe i should buy Franks much needed shelter ... cat3
Haven't read through all the posts on ths thread yet, interesting though.
wrt Delia's first post; comment on an enviro tv programme a few months back, if the world population continues to multiply and deplete resources, pollute the environment etc at the current trend, the human species will need another planet the size of earth by 2030.
So yes, as far as tsunamis and other destructive natural catastrophes are concerned, suppose it's natures way of speeding up what HIV AIDS and other immoral dieases aren't keeping abreast with... reducing the world population.
Known fact: There are TOO MANY people on this planet for effective sustainability. So, every 2nd man in your street... be a good lad, do your bit for the world and get the snip...
Think this End of day's is linked to the other Post Life after death......................Margaret said that I have been dead from the neck down for years,and there not much going on above either.
I don't believe in the BULL**** climate change (by human activity) the climate is always changing and will do so until the sun decides to burn out.
Which our present day scientists say in about 5 billion years, all this stuff about the planet can be googled.
I can remember back in the early 60s they said that we were heading into another 'ICE' age and that half of Europe would be under ice
so we all ran out and bought overcoats.
For every ten scientists and experts saying its the end of the world , there are the same amount saying the opposite, but I no one thing that stays constant....................... money.
Frank there is validity to mankinds continuing population growth using and depleting natures resources and yes generating more output of the greenhouse gases .. we have become a power greedy world .. agreed there is aways change ,, the difference is how fast are we in our current scenario accelerating it ??? thats the big question .. yes there are irritating alarmists out there and continuing differing opinions .. but there are also the bare facts .. we are using and will eventually be running out of resources and yes at the same time raping and polluting the planet .. Mother nature can only give so much and yes only take so much before the wheel turns ..
PS my offer of monopoly money still valid for payment of a shelter >>> ???
G'day Sandy still waiting for that 10.000 post from Michael !!!
All I can say Sandy about the post, I still believe its money and the scare factor that generates this.
In one half of the world people are starving in the other half they are dieing from Obesity
We are slowly moving towards renewable energy,and there again Money is the over whelming factor for the prevention of these free energy's to be pass on.
I believe that in the next 25 to 50 years we will have started to colonise Mars and from there who knows, because one thing for sure the Human species will have to find another place to call home.
Krakatoa.......1883
On August 27, 1883, an immense volcano on an island in the Sunda Straits of immense archipelago that was the Dutch East Indies (now called Indonesia) annihilated itself in an explosion that changed the world. Thousands of people in the vicinity of the volcano died right there; many more were made homeless and destitute as a result of it. The shock wave from that titanic explosion manifested as atmospheric pressure waves -- sound waves -- heard thousands of miles away, and the disaster was followed by an enormous tsunami that killed nearly forty thousand people. Dust generated by the eruption entered the atmosphere and was carried around the planet for years; the dust caused gorgeous, lurid sunsets with unsettling displays of light, but it also made global temperatures plummet, with consequent losses of crops, disastrous levels of snow and rain in many areas of the world followed by massive erosion and destruction of habitat, and countless other catastrophes.
Oops!! nearly forgot I just checked the Aussie dollar against the SA dollar 1A = 6.4SA now these (B S F T P) shelters are Super Lightweight they are ply able waterproof !! fireproof !! and I can post them to you at a small cost !! and are we talking SA dollars or Aussie......................................Frank................ image04
Frank you not listening .. Monopoly money .. its the only currency thats universal // no exchange rate issues .. catmusic the shelter might just make an intersting addition to my " secret garden " for any gullible friends I have ... anyhow despite my belief in the mystical I am not easily duped .. thanks to my open minded parentage and my soul growth resulting from life experience .. I am a sort of open minded sceptic ... on the renewable and free energy sources i can only agree .. lots of vested interest .. .. sadly so short sighted ... Loved the krakatoa reminder .. it was a natural disaster of such huge magnitude ... I still however have a strong belief in individual contribution .. what are we contributing to the acceleration of the next wobbler ... ??
THE END OF DAYS !!!! This is a perfect example!! OF HOW ALARMISTS WORK.
TALE OF TWO HOUSES
House #1
A 20 room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on
a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house, all heated by gas. In
one month this residence consumes more energy than the average American
household does in a year. The average bill for electricity and natural gas
runs over $2400 per month. In natural gas alone, this property consumes
more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is
not situated in a Northern or Midwestern "snow belt" area. It's in the
South.
______________________________
__
House #2
Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university.
This house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can
provide. The house is 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on a
high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds
geothermal heat-pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into
the ground.
The water (usually 67 degrees F) heats the house in the winter and cools it
in the summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas
and it consumes one-quarter electricity required for a conventional
heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled
into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and
toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The
collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Surrounding
flowers and shrubs native to the area enable the property to blend into the
surrounding rural landscape.
~~~~~
HOUSE #1 is outside of Nashville, Tennessee; it is the adobe of the
"environmentalist" Al Gore.
HOUSE #2 is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas; it is the residence of ex
President of the United States, George W. Bush.
An "inconvenient truth."
And, yes ... I DID check Snopes
You can verify it at :
:emot112_2: I dont think we need to fear running out of space or food , i am absolutely sure an American NUKE will becoming your way before that happens " in the inrerests of American National Self Preservation " of course ...and plse note that those so called Mayan Guru's were also cold blooded murderers killing small kids by the thousands to apease there God . Would you believe in a president today if he did that today ....oh crap ...they are doing it....mmmmmmm....makes you think how gullible we are.
These books are causing more questions than answers....
We all know that not all of mankind are created equal, some people are not as clever as others, some people are born to murder rape and pillage. so what happens to their souls when they pass on.....
do all the people around us have souls, or are some of them just here as cannon fodder to test our current life on earth.....
what happens if 4 members of a family of 5 are decent good souls, but the 5th one turns out to be a mass murderer...... but all 5 of that family love each other equally, do only 4 move on, but the 5th gets stuck?
You right Mike, they do raise more questions than answers which to me is awesome as it keeps us seeking & coming to our our own Truth. Questioning is good, not just taking everything in gullibly.
When it comes to the not all being born equal thing, some rich, some poor - my personal belief Mike is that it all boils down to what karma we bring into this life from previous lifetimes and what our chosen life lessons are this time round.
Hitler - i've read that his chosen life lesson was actually Love, believe it or not but sadly his heart centre closed when he fell in love with seductive forces of power cutting off his capacity to truly love his fellow man with compassion and caring.
As to what happens to their souls when passing on........again, my own personal belief is that they move onto a dimension whose energy frequency resonates with their own - like attracts like.
Quote from: Michael Alexander on August 07, 2009, 06:38:34 AM
some people are born to murder rape and pillage.
Sorry what hogwash no-body is born to do these things. It boils down to choices one makes in life. Granted there are situations that would influence those choices but none the less one chooses to murder,rape and pillage.
I have to agree with Diana on that one Mike. Again, it's my personal belief - I don't believe anybody's born with evil intentions no matter what karma or life lessons they bring in with them - what would the purpose be I ask myself? The way i understand it, the whole idea is to evolve to a higher consciousness through lifetimes and you cannot do that through rape, pillage, murder, etc. God's greatest gift to us is freewill & it comes down to choices we make in our life, consciously or subconsciously, as to how quickly or slowly we evolve - in any situation we have the choice to turn the other cheek or strike back. We can never blame anybody else for our life - at the end of the day, the choice always lies with ourselves.
My own philosophy which i try my best to live by is :
"Think good thoughts, say good words, do good deeds, help others where you can and don't sweat the small stuff" - i feel i can't really go wrong with that and i've seen the benefits of that mindset manifest in my life living by that code.
Hi Frank,
Very blunt statements on climate change, scary too. But no maths, no figures, no actual tonnages on which to compute these interesting claims, no sources and certainly no statements from reliable scientific bodies to back them up. Take a look below at the views of around 2,500 scientists in some 150 countries. Collectively they appear to present a very strong case for the man-made global warming brigade.
However, a way to decide on which side you want to take a stand is to begin with the premise that both sides can't be right. How then to opt for the right one if each disputes what the other is saying?
Begin with ignoring all the evidence pro and con and ask yourself which one offers the better long term outcome for humankind. If you choose the naysayers you can save yourself money, perhaps a lot of money. Think of all that carbon tax you can avoid paying and all those useless restrictions on cars, energy use, open fireplaces et al that you could get rid of. It's a no-brainer, right?
Hmmm, but what if the naysayers are wrong and the other side proves right? Yes, you've saved a bundle of money but what have you lost? A lifestyle at the least, perhaps your life, and almost certainly the lives of children and grandchildren if we consider the worst possible scenarios.
So it boils down to which is the most expensive option if you get it wrong. Opt for the climate change theory and it could be expensive, but only in terms of money. Opt for the other and it could be ultimately, eternally and terminally ruinously expensive.
Which then is the best bet: loss of money in terms of a small portion of your income, or loss of everything? I repeat: it's a no-brainer.
A sobering collection of facts follow: The source is given at the bottom.
IS GLOBAL WARMING HAPPENING?
Yes. Earth is already showing many signs of worldwide climate change.
• Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius) around the world since 1880, much of this in recent decades, according to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
• The rate of warming is increasing. The 20th century's last two decades were the hottest in 400 years and possibly the warmest for several millennia, according to a number of climate studies. And the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that 11 of the past 12 years are among the dozen warmest since 1850.
• The Arctic is feeling the effects the most. Average temperatures in Alaska, western Canada, and eastern Russia have risen at twice the global average, according to the multinational Arctic Climate Impact Assessment report compiled between 2000 and 2004.
• Arctic ice is rapidly disappearing, and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040 or earlier. Polar bears and indigenous cultures are already suffering from the sea-ice loss.
• Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting—for example, Montana's Glacier National Park now has only 27 glaciers, versus 150 in 1910. In the Northern Hemisphere, thaws also come a week earlier in spring and freezes begin a week later.
• Coral reefs, which are highly sensitive to small changes in water temperature, suffered the worst bleaching—or die-off in response to stress—ever recorded in 1998, with some areas seeing bleach rates of 70 percent. Experts expect these sorts of events to increase in frequency and intensity in the next 50 years as sea temperatures rise.
• An upsurge in the amount of extreme weather events, such as wildfires, heat waves, and strong tropical storms, is also attributed in part to climate change by some experts.
ARE HUMANS CAUSING IT?
"Very likely," the IPCC said in a February 2007 report.
The report, based on the work of some 2,500 scientists in more than 130 countries, concluded that humans have caused all or most of the current planetary warming. Human-caused global warming is often called anthropogenic climate change.
• Industrialization, deforestation, and pollution have greatly increased atmospheric concentrations of water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, all greenhouse gases that help trap heat near Earth's surface. (See an interactive feature on how global warming works.)
• Humans are pouring carbon dioxide into the atmosphere much faster than plants and oceans can absorb it.
• These gases persist in the atmosphere for years, meaning that even if such emissions were eliminated today, it would not immediately stop global warming.
• Some experts point out that natural cycles in Earth's orbit can alter the planet's exposure to sunlight, which may explain the current trend. Earth has indeed experienced warming and cooling cycles roughly every hundred thousand years due to these orbital shifts, but such changes have occurred over the span of several centuries. Today's changes have taken place over the past hundred years or less.
• Other recent research has suggested that the effects of variations in the sun's output are "negligible" as a factor in warming, but other, more complicated solar mechanisms could possibly play a role.
WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN?
A follow-up report by the IPCC released in April 2007 warned that global warming could lead to large-scale food and water shortages and have catastrophic effects on wildlife.
• Sea level could rise between 7 and 23 inches (18 to 59 centimeters) by century's end, the IPCC's February 2007 report projects. Rises of just 4 inches (10 centimeters) could flood many South Seas islands and swamp large parts of Southeast Asia.
• Some hundred million people live within 3 feet (1 meter) of mean sea level, and much of the world's population is concentrated in vulnerable coastal cities. In the U.S., Louisiana and Florida are especially at risk.
• Glaciers around the world could melt, causing sea levels to rise while creating water shortages in regions dependent on runoff for fresh water.
• Strong hurricanes, droughts, heat waves, wildfires, and other natural disasters may become commonplace in many parts of the world. The growth of deserts may also cause food shortages in many places.
• More than a million species face extinction from disappearing habitat, changing ecosystems, and acidifying oceans.
• The ocean's circulation system, known as the ocean conveyor belt, could be permanently altered, causing a mini-ice age in Western Europe and other rapid changes.
• At some point in the future, warming could become uncontrollable by creating a so-called positive feedback effect. Rising temperatures could release additional greenhouse gases by unlocking methane in permafrost and undersea deposits, freeing carbon trapped in sea ice, and causing increased evaporation of water.
This is a list of end time events from today and into the future. Some of these events will come one after the other while others may be almost simultaneous.
On our sites these events are studied in detail and the biblical proofs are presented in the articles. This is meant to place all of these events in a practical order for an easier understanding of how they fit together. For an understanding of each event and for the scriptural proof, it will be very necessary to study through the various articles.
We DO NOT get our teachings from the heathan, nor from so called Biblical helps and commentaries written by unconverted men. Neither do we stand on the traditions of ANY man or organization. You will find this material to be unique and filled with things that have NOT been taught before. Even those who have a history in the sabbatarian Church of God, will find much that is new to them.
I urge you not to neglect studying an article because you might assume that you know the content from the title. If for instance, you see the title: The Christian Sabbath, and think you know what I am saying on the subject; take a read anyway, you will be surprised by the new perspectives and understanding brought to the subject. Do you think that no man will ever go to heaven? Here, direct from the Bible is what God says. The Wedding Feast and the Marriage of the Lamb.
Our three sites are loaded with the MEAT of God's Word; BON APPETIT!!!
A step by step list of end time events. Number one is my own opinion, the remainder are Holy Scripture.
1 A Middle East war is expected to set the conditions for a peace agreement.
2 The Abomination, which IS the false prophet; will be set up (this is the first seal of Revelation).
3 A peace deal will be reached; allowing for a declaration of peace and safety very near the time that the abomination goes to the Holy Place, 1 Thes 5:3. There may or may not be a seven year treaty with the Jews, Palestinians and Vatican. There will NOT be 3 1/2 years of peace (this is a non biblical tradition of Protesant origin). War will begin AS SOON AS peace is declared.
4 He (the abomination; false prophet) will call for and bring about a revival of the Holy Roman Empire during a 75 day period.
5 The two prophets of God will begin their work.
6 Jerusalem will be surrounded by armies; probably peacekeepers to enforce the agreement.
7 The Church will flee into the wilderness; arriving at the time that the abomination visits the Holy Place.
8 The false prophet will travel to the Holy Place.
9 This will trigger violence which results in the occupation of the city by these European peace keepers.
10 Israel will not give up Jerusalem without a fight and all Judea will be subjugated.
11 The US will enter the conflict in support of Israel and will be nuked and defeated but not totally destroyed and probably not occupied; just brought to her knees.
12 Europe will be supreme for about 2-3 years.
13 Europe will attack the Asian nations of Russia China ect.
14 Asia will absorb the attack and move into Europe destroying it.
15 The beast and false prophet (abomination) will move to Jerusalem to make their last stand.
16 The two prophets will be killed 3 1/2 days later the resurrection will take place
.17 The Asian armies will move south toward Jerusalem and camp at Miggedo, the Wedding Feast of the Lamb will take place in heaven; and the seven last plagues will be poured out; during the 45 days between the resurrection and the end of the 1,335 days. See the Wedding Feast article at the link provided above; and also the article on the 1,290 and the 1,335 days.
18 The Asian armies will attack Jerusalem and take half of the city.
19 Christ will come WITH his saints and put down all factions.
20 The beast and false prophet will be killed at the end of the 1,335 days of Dan 12.
21 God's spirit will be poured out on all flesh, establishing his kingdom on a Feast of Pentecost.
22 There will be 1,000 years of peace; completing a 7,000 year plan for the firstfruits.
23 Satan will be released for a short time and then removed forever.
24 Then the 7,000 year plan for the main harvest will begin; and the Feast of the Ingathering of Nations or the Feast of Tabernacles will bring all repentant humanity into the family of God.
25 After the seven thousand years of the Feast of Tabernacles, the surface of the earth and all wickedness will be destroyed and cleansed by fire.
26 The New Jerusalem will come down from heaven, the Father will come to be with his Christ and his saints; and an eternal future of peace and harmony will bring an endless increase of God's Kingdom throughout the universe.
Hi Paul,
I hesitate to take up faith issues on logical grounds as the two forms of thought are incompatible. In other words there is no logic in faith and there can, by definition, be no acceptance of faith in the use of logic.
This statement is therefore not aimed at your points given above. I have no wish to tread on your faith, rather my points are addressed to those others who might feel a bit concerned at the events described and would appreciate some more logical view.
* The "Bible" we read today is collection of writings or books going back as early as the 6th century BC and as late as the first century AD. It includes the Jewish Torah (the first five books of the Bible), some Babylonian and other writings.
*As the early Christians were all Jews, including Christ, the first New Testament writings were most likely in Aramaic, the language which Christ spoke. Later the move was to Hebrew, a more upmarket language for those days. But because the Christians were told to spread the Word they had to move out into a world which was predominantly Hellenistic or Greek so the language of the writings changed again.
*But as Christianity spread to Rome the language of choice became Latin and that was the form in which the Roman Catholic church spread it to Europe.
*As such it was read only by the priests who translated into the common tongue as they spoke from the pulpit, whether French, English, German et al. And of course altering it as they saw fit. This carried on until the 14th century when John Wycliffe produced the first written English translations. This so enraged the Catholic Church that the Pope ordered Wycliffe's bones to be dug up years after his death, pulverised and dumped in a cess pit. then for nearly 200 years they periodically burned at the stake anyone else caught reading this heretical version of the Scriptures.
* At every stage of the Bible's journey to what we see in English today it had errors added, pieces discarded and even whole books removed; fifteen in fact, now called the Apocrypha. For anyone interested, Wikipaedia has an entry describing the Apocrypha.
*The reason for all this editing was that various religious schools of thought believed that their faithful should be fed only their version of the recorded events. Any item which clashed with the intention of their particular religion was simply ditched. It wasn't until the Synod of Hippo in AD 393 that the various bishops agreed on what is today more or less the format of the present Bible.
*Since then it has been hashed and rehashed again to suit the Catholic, Greek Orthodox and the various Protestant sects including Lutherism. Each has a version they cherish and uphold against all others. Some have the Apocalyptic, the descriptions of the so-called End Times, and some don't.
*Hence, if yours doesn't have the Apocalypse then it won't happen in your world as you believe that your Scriptures tell you all you need to know about how the world came about and how it will end. Belief, or faith, is all you need. After all, didn't the Bible tell us that "by faith ye shall move mountains"?
*So where does that leave us poor benighted folks who can't accept such a clashing of illogical propositions and opt instead to follow reasoning as a way of arriving at some semblance of reality?
*Well, we can relax in the knowledge that the world is filled with competing belief systems only one of which can be right. The fact that a geographical accident of birth decides your beliefs is in itself an indication of a weakness in the setup.
*If you were born to a Christian family in a Christian nation, perhaps bang in the middle of the Bible belt of America, you'd have been brought up stuffed to the ears with hellfire and damnation - laced of course with lashings of male domination as their God is male and of course omnipotent. Keeps them sassy wimmin in place, hey Jed? And don't any of you Gays stick your heads up. God has told us what to do with you.
*If of course you were born in Baghdad you could be a Sunni or Shia or one of the other two or three dozen versions of the Muslim faith. Skip across to Japan and you have Shintoism (ancestor worship) or China for Confucianism. We won't go near India or the rest of Asia which has enough faiths to make your head spin.
*Each, of course, is right and all the others are wrong and hence heretics. All heretics, including you dear unbeliever, are damned to hellfire forever unless you fess up, join the church and, more importantly, pay up.
*So if you want to feel you have an imaginary friend who looks after you and keeps you safe, opt for one of these. As a registered believer you can even shout it out loud in the street and, as long as you wave a Bible while doing so, the men in white coats won't come and take you away.
It also helps contain that frustrated rage the faithful feel when confronted with unbelievers. They want to see the naysayers damned to hell, so it is comforting for them to read tales of just that kind of thing happening. In other words the End Times.
But, as I said when I started this piece, this is addressed to those who prefer a logical approach to life, in other words unbelievers. What then should an unbeliever do when confronted with this kind of "you are damned to eternity' stuff?
*Just do the math. Your chances of being right in your own belief in the face of this competing horde of beliefs, half-truths, straight scams and snake oil salesmen are pretty damn good.
World won't end in 2012 - expert
2011-04-15 14:00
Duncan Alfreds
Cape Town - The world is not going to end in 2012 and people should not panic because of fears of a major planet or asteroid hitting the earth, an astronomer has said.
"No, that's the short answer," Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell told News24 when asked about end of the world prophecies.
Burnell was part of the team that discovered pulsars when she was a postgraduate student in 1967. Her thesis supervisor, Antony Hewish, shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Martin Ryle for the discovery.
She was responding to conspiracy theories that suggest the Maya calendar predicts the end of the world through cataclysm in 2012 as well as a book written by Zecharia Sitchin and others suggesting that aliens visited Earth in ancient times and that their planet might be on a collision course.
"Yes, they talk about the ancient Sumerians having had contact with extra terrestrial beings on a planet called Nibiru. Now, if it has such a long orbital period you can work out an awful lot. An orbit of 3 600 years [as described by Sitchin in The 12th Planet] means it's a long, thin orbit.
"That would be very difficult for ancient people to detect against the star background, because it would appear that the planet is moving backward and forward. There's some suspicion of trouble there," Burnell said.
Visible
She said that if the planet was on a collision course with Earth in 2012, it would already be very close and easily visible to astronomers.
"If it's going to collide with the earth, it should be close - near the orbit of Jupiter or Saturn - so we'd see it by now. There is a possibility it could be a star, but then it would be so bright, we'd see it - even during the day," she said.
Some have suggested that a huge body might be on a collision course, but not on the same plane that the planets usually orbit, but Burnell rejected this, saying that modern astronomy was capable of detecting bodies that might destroy Earth.
"The ancients were very impressive for when they were around, but we have infinitely better equipment. They, though, had a much better view of the night sky because there wasn't any pollution," she said.
Some writers have suggested that ancient people didn't actually see distant stars but were given the information from extra terrestrial travellers who came to Earth and modified DNA to produce modern humans.
Legends
They cite legends from the Dogon tribe in West Africa which purport to identify the white dwarf Sirius B, the legends surrounding Quetzalcoatl, the Mesoamerican deity whose name means "feathered serpent", as well as the construction of the Egyptian pyramids to reflect stellar patterns.
"Genetic data will answer that one soon. The main snag is the huge time it takes to travel enormous distances, but if they [extra terrestrials] could tunnel through time and space, we'd see that with our instruments," Burnell said.
She also answered the question of why the Maya calendar ends in 2012.
"They just ran out of space. If they were still around, they'd be doing the next cycle of their calendar."
