Remember Oom Wessie or as we all remember him as "Kan Nie Worrie Nie."
Another Omund character like Marggie that will never be forgotten.
Before his death (sadly by murder) Omund company had him back in Omund and opened a beer garden in his name - I think between Casey's and the old market. He used to have us around at his house in the early 70s, at the end of the December school holidays and lectured us on the dangers of drugs and to rather have a drink or smoke.
A good man!

Yes kannie worrie was a gentleman and a great friend of my Father(pikkewyn) his passing was a great shock to my pops.I remember one night with some pals sitting on the corner by the rugby field of old (opposite 12 avenue )and waiting for kannie worrie to come crawling passed in his old beetle he used to drive. He was never stopped even though under the influence ,never caused an accident and used to take abou a half hour to drive from his favourite watering hole to his house plus minus 800 metres..truely an oranjemund legend..
Mark(swanie)
I remember Kan nie Worrie nie camping one weekend in the centre of town...........
I also remember that and playing his guitar!

And don't forget his tree here on the way to Port Nolloth... It's still there, He used to camp there nearly every weekend.
Yeah . . . I remember that night that he camped out in the middle of town on the circle with his guitar . . . Shucks, that seems like yesterday Oppiie, that we came stumbling out of Casies Bar!!
i seem to recall a story of him going door to door selling bibles or something?
Delia, I believe Oom Wessie would try anything.
:36_2_35: Post moved to the correct thread. Is there a way of somehow getting a popup message when starting a duplicate topic? I am still working my way through all the topics and may sometimes inadvertantly duplicate a previously posted topic.
Thanks Carl, thes are the stories and pictures we need here
By the way, i know all 3 guys by face but not the names.
Keep on posting
Nice Pic Carl I remember all 3 of those faces. Go to "Kannie Worrie" , " Kan Nie Worrie Nie" and "I wonder What they must be thinking" all 3 on this board with great tales of Kannie Worrie. I don't know how to do links so unless the Georgs can help you'll just have to search the board.
When mike is back he can move that topic to the other post

Kannie Worrie used to sit on that same trafic circle with his guitar
My Dad told us once about this regular at Casey's who was known to everybody as "Kannieworrienie". Apparently he had gotten into a dispute with CDM about something, and when the matter was not settled to his liking he decided to take the matter one step further.
As a form of protest, he pitched a tent in the middle of the traffic circle outside Caseys and proceeded to camp there for a while. He was well equiped with all the works, skottel braai, dop, en chop. During the day he would toast the cars going by and offer beers to whoever was interested.
I came across this photo of him in Frans van Rooyen's collection in the photo section of the Oranjemund online website. He's the one in the center.
Ok I moved it. You can find it now at the link that Georg Snr specified. Sorry about that, I'm the new guy around here. :36_2_35:
That's okay Carl. It's happened to all of us.
You're doing a good job on the board by adding topics, posting interesting stories and joining in on the fun with chat and games. In German we say (hope you remember) "Wo gehobelt wird, fallen Späne."

How on earth did you delete or move that Carl, teach me?
I wasn't being cute,I just thought you would be interested in the other threads as well.
Great having you around e154
Thanks guys and Diana. I suddenly don't feel like such a newbie anymore. bighug
Diana, it's quite easy. You call up your posting, click on modify, cut and paste it into the other thread, click save, and Bob's your auntie. You can only perform this on your own messages though, unless you know where Michael or Snr keep their passwords :36_2_35:
Georg jnr, I'll have to ask my parents in law what that proverb means. My German is a bit rusty.
It only means, whatever you're doing you'll always be making/leaving dirt. Which means in your case: You're doing hard work and will make mistakes now and then. You're not perfect. And that's okay...
Ok thanks :36_2_35:
Carl, thanks for posting a photograph, I remember your Dad well (and I can see the resemblence )
As far as I can remember they cancelled Oom Wessies leave and he had to work so to make a point he pitched his tent on the circle and had his weekend that way, withoyt leaving Town.
Oom Wessie, Pikkewyn, Old man Spies and a number of others used to drink at Casey's on a Sunday evening and woud have what they called a choir session, singing allong with Fred Briers playing on beer glasses tuned with differnt levels of water.
I'm sure Sandy Buchannan will be able to remember these sessions.
Well I worked there .. so yes i remember all the characters and the eveningsit would buzz like a budgie cage .. .. pictures floating around in my head .. will tell more stories once the relay stck is thrust into my hand again ...Sandy
They actually called the beer garden back then at Casey's Kannie Worrie COurt!
Oom Wessie was a friend of my dads and always got very tearful when he visited us and told me how fond he was of my father. He was always a bit tipsy and it was so strange to see this grown man cry but my dad had a lot of respect for him and we all loved him.
@ Florrie, I agree he was a great man and we all appreciated him. We had good day in Caseys with him. The reason why he used to cry especially when he was drunk is he was a very emotional man. The best sports I saw was when him and Haaspie were together. Haaspie was Peter du Toit's step father. great snooker player especially when he had a few too many.
Yes, I knew Haaspie well, Markie was one of my best friends.
Hi Florrie, how you doing? I am pleased to know that you knew the Loubsers well. They lived next door to me in E15/12th Avenue. I am in contact with their step brother Peter du Toit. I believe from Peter that Kevin is in Witbank. I have not heard anything about Mark as yet. Will keep you posted if I get to know anything.
Regards,
Pepe
Hi Pepe, we lived at E14/11. I remember your name and where you lived. I think you are around my brother Dave and sister Diana's age. I was friends with all three younger Laubschers. Markie was living with Kevin in Witbank but has major problems which is driving Kevin insane. I take my hat off to him for trying to look after his brother, it isn't easy.
The first time I ever got pissed was at the Laubschers house, drank vodka and Oros, their mom called me "dronkie" after that image201
when I got home my mom thought I was sick and was very worried about me untill I started falling around the place, I still remember her saying to my dad "she's not sick, she's pissed" then they tried to find out were I had got the booze from, I didn't want to split on my friends so I made up a story that we found a bottle of wine at the swimming pool.
I was gated for the rest of the holidays image031

Of course we lied.. we would never disclose or get anyone we knew into trouble with our folks .. one of the times i got really horribly drunk .. was at the end of Std 4 or 5 ( boiled quite a few brain cells then ) so cant exactly remember ... it was new years eve .. folks had gone off to dance the year in .. me i was alone at home .. had snuck a sherry or two from mums supply then Ian and crowd of friends came home to party the year in seeing as folks were not yet home ... well they had an abundant supply of booze .. i was allowed an innocent drink or two .. but unbeknown to them I snuck quite a few more canes and coke .. then it really hit .. i was now absolutely shitfaced ... decided to go visit Peter watson ... i recall stumbling falling on my face so many times .. the evning air making my state even worse .. got to my destination to find theior house in darkness .. did the stumble home thing falling and weaving , slamming into fences .. then hit the cold sweat and puke stage .. by the time i got home .. Ian and co had left , but folks had arrived home , thinking that i was safely tucked in bed till they saw this pale puke bedecked eyes like saucers creature stumble inot the house mumbling and giggling .. well all hell broke loose .. the questions and i just fended them off in the best slurry speech i could manage ... Must be something about the swimming pool Paula cos i told my folks that a man sitting outside the swimming pool gave me booze to drink ... much howling by Mum and da having the usual presence of mind to just say "Elnor let the boy go sleep he will suffer the physical consequences the next day and you will get no sense out of him right now" ... so i was allowed to stumble off to bed but with a bucket , Mom shouting .. "any mess on the floor you clean up yourself so make sure you aim well " so funny i remember that horror time .. I woke up the next day as dead as dead could be suffered for two days with hangover from hell .. my dad controlling my moms growling with the retort " let him suffer in silence maybe it will teach him a lesson " ha ha never learnt did i ?
There you go, thankyou SandyB at least we didn't get our pals into sh*t with us.
Bet Mike and Georgjr blamed it all on their friends, at least we took the punch for it on our own.
