How many of you heard the story as a kid, that if you threw a stone at a gemsbok, he would knock it back at you! Kinda like Gemsbok cricket, I never had the courage to do it though!
::)
Hey, Gemsbok, I'm gonna frow you wiff a stone...
Ever been chased by one... I was, on my bike fortunately...
Yes the urban legend of gemsbok cricket ?? also heard the story that they could bat a stone away with their horns . dont be surprised at the outcome of this mystery . could well be true ... I have many memories of walking ( shuffling ,, staggering Oh whatever !! ) home when we stayed in E 35/11th .and coming around the corner and being greeted by a whole mini herd of the creatures .. if you were quiet you could just slip by them .. however nothing more scary than a whole lot of them on a run .. you just find the nearest fence and fly over it ...
Ha! Those damned gemsbokke forced detours on me many a time! I'd be walking home (still 2km to go) from the school down a road in the evening and then they'd appear up ahead like ghosts and just stand there looking at you. I think all kids knew about gemsbok cricket, and we'd pelt them with stones but they never flinched. We also knew that they could spear you with those horns so you didn't want to get too close to them, and you can just about see the closest alley, just bayond the damned bokke! So you couldn't use that alley to go to the next street, thus you had to walk al the way back to the end of the avenue (or the previous alley) to get past the bokke!
I remember once, in the dead of night, waking up and hearing strange noises outside my bedroom window. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be wild donkeys eating away at mom's garden plants. Someone had left the gate open again...
