notfair Just to let you all know that Mike is going to be medically evacuated to Windhoek this afternoon with acute appendicitis. He was sick all night last night with fever, cramps and stomach ache and diagnosed himself. He went to the hospital this morning and due to the fact that there are only 3 doctors here and they are concerned about the anaesthetic and his weight they have chosen to fly him out to Windhoek so that they can operate there.
So perhaps it wasn't the food at CTFM after all!
Let me run so that I can go and pack his bag for him. We were hoping that he would be flown down to Panorama but the medical aid is kicking up a fuss about cross-border something or other!

Holding thumbs for you both ... and a speedy recovery for Mike .. most appendix work today is keyhole surgery so pain and recovery time is greatly reduced ...
Get well soon Mike ... ill-3d
Yep Mike. Hope the next news about you are positive. Get well soon.
Damn, if he was flown to CT I could have sneaked in to take a video of the procedure and posted it on the forum!
Good luck Mike, thinking of you! Hope you're up and about soon. Like Sandy said, nowadays it's usually minor surgery compared to older times. Hope they get him on the table soon!
Yes Michele, could well have been chronic appendicitis and not the food, and he was complaining about the humidity - it could well have been a bit of fever in stead! Glad you didn't have problems on the long road back home!
Good luck Mike!
Hang in there Mike, think positive, you will be comming out of there lighter then when you went in msn emoticon (224)
Will be thinking of you, get well soon! ill-3d

Michelle,
Please let me know where Mike is so that I can go irritate him in hospital.
My land line is 061-2701228
Thanks
goodmorning everyone - just to keep you all updated. I've just spoken to Mike, he was operated on at 22h00 last night. Doc reckons the appendix was perforated already. Mike says he is in a lot of pain (typical man - no pain threshold whatsoever!) and wasn't able to talk long on the phone. It sounds like he will be in hospital until Monday and we're hoping will be able to come straight home.
Sheena and Dalene - he is in the Roman Catholic hospital. Don't terrorize him too much Sheena and Dalene - don't sneak him in any biltong or droewors please!
Will let you all know again later when I speak to him again!
Thank-you for all the love, calls, thoughts, prayers and suppport, it makes a difference knowing there are people out there that care!
3d smiles(281)
Hi Michelle, glad that Mike is OK and glad that they got the appendix out quickly.
In so far as the pain thresh hold that is why women give birth and not men! And he didn't have to push either.
Any way our thoughts are with him and with you, hope you get your scan today, and then you can find out if it ias a hamburger or a hot dog.....
Wonder what thoughts Sister Theresa was thinking when she had to shave him? Now that would have been priceless, but I am sure he was in too much pain to worry about the habbitt she was wearing.
Any way please keep us posted, I believe Namibian Breweries are already worried about the drop in beer sales.
Get well soon Mick all the best Mavis
Hi Michele, glad to hear everything went ok and that the operation is over. Still thinking of you the whole time.
@ Skinny - I heard it's the other towns being supplied by Nam Breweries that's worried they wont get their full orders - Mike is in Windhoek, so the beer is being intercepted before it can be sent out to the bottle stores!
I have my doubts about Mikes appendix,
is it now the closeness to whk breweries that he is looking for ???
Jokes aside, glad all is over and no complications, all the best Mike rooster
Yes Michele. To be honest, I'm stil worried. I'll only believe he's fine when he's back in "our family".
Please send him my regards and tell him I hope he's back soon.
Hope recovery is speedy and pain free (that is for you Michelle! ha ha) Seriously, get well soon Mike!
Delighted to hear all went well
Look after yourself Michele - thinking of you bighug
You'll all be glad to know that Mike is sounding a lot better - I just got an sms from him - "friggin chicken soup for the 3rd time today - I'm fading away here!"
He hadn't seen the doctor yet today so we're still not too sure when he can come home! image031
I read him everybody's posts and he had a good laugh and says thank-you to all of you. He's wishing he had his laptop and 3G with him so that he could log on but it was just too much of a risk to take it with.
Will let you all know tomorrow how he is doing!
3d smiles(281)
After reading Cherry's post I'm glad this happened now and not next year after baby was born as then I'd have two kids and two babies on my hands!
Glad to hear all bearing up there ... just remind Mike that Chicken soup is good for him !! its not called jewish pennicillin for nothing ... My Mom and da would make nice chicken lemon and rice soup with lots of the good veg in it whenever we were ill .. the purpose of the lemon was to help extract some of the calcium from the bones .. and no he will not fade away .. chicken soup is full of nutrition .. sure his Mom made it too when they were ill ?? scots people are of the waste not want not lot .. so a good leftover carcass from the roast was ideal for the soup ...
Unfortunately soup does not rate very highly on Mike's list of foods - he doesn't consider it a meal, no matter how thick it is or what it has in it. Hopefully he will soon see the benefits of it.
On the positive side at least I won't have to put up with the smell of braaimeat or steak in the house this week-end! woo_hoo The poor braai is going to wonder what's happened - it's week-end, why is nobody using me? Stennie - perhaps you'd better come around and light the fire! 36_1_72 I'm sure there are still a couple of beers left from Wed as well! BierSuip
msn emoticon (224) Hi3
Hi Michelle, sorry to hear about Mike ...glad he has been sorted out!!!
Don't envy you when he comes home!!!!!! MAN PAIN and all that!!!!
Jokes aside Get well soon Mike 36_1_72
Glad to hear Mike's feeling better
perhaps while he was beeing shaved he was looking at something else Boobs
Come home soon pal
alfred
Sorry girls I'm with Mike here.......appendisitis not funny.......as painfull as childbirth but with nothing to to show for it.
Then again Mike you big and strong and you can do it, will be rooster of the roost again before long.
Yes Mike. Get well soon. Your family needs you.
ill-3d Sorry for the late response. I myself had some elective surgery and was suppose to be released from hospital on Tuesday but eventually got released on Wednesday afternoon. Been down flat ever since.
Sorry to hear you have been down Mike, here is wishing you a speedy recovery. bighug
Sorry - I never updated you all yesterday but there wasn't much change except for the fact that Mike could feel the gout starting to set in - luckily in his knee so he could still move around! When I phoned him he answered the phone "Chicken Soup Central!"
When I spoke to him first thing this morning he sounded a bit peeved as he'd seen the doctor last night and the doc was concerned about his fever - Mike tried to explain it was probably from his gout attack but the doc reckons they would keep an eye and if didn't abate he might have to open up the cut to see whether there was an infection!
Luckily he phoned back a couple hours later to say that the doctor was quite happy and the fever was gone and that he would be able to come home and continue his course of antibiotics at the hospital here. Now I just need to get hold of the lady at the hospital first thing tomorrow morning so that we can get him on a flight - not sure how long this will take to sort out, I'm doubting it will be as soon as tomorrow - maybe Tuesday!
My folks have spoken to him since and reckon he had something different for lunch so he should be feeling much better now!
rooster
Thanks for the update Michelle. Glad to hear that things are going much better and that Mike will be returning to you and the girls soon.
@ Michele - Thanx for the good news. Hope the meal was worth it, and not simply changed from chicken to pea soup!!!!
Mike, we miss you!
woo_hoo Great news Michele...... policedog-small
More chicken soup for him ... !!! Jewish pennicillin .. who needs antibiotics when the soup does wonders ... ape good to hear all is Ok ...
Interesting the gout attack...as all Mike's having is chicken soup. Makes one wonder if it realy is the meat and beer that bring it on.
We were both expecting the gout attack, the same happened a couple of years ago when he was in hospital with a really bad throat infection. Also when we went to see the rheumatologist last year he explained that any change in the body will cause an attack - unfortunately Mike's body has become so used to beer and braaimeat that it starts suffering withdrawal symptoms if it doesn't get its regular dose! image201
Let me rooster - it's Monday and it's going to be another busy day for me!
Yes Michele. The withdrawel can be dangerous. Please take care of Mike. My regards...
abouttime woo_hoo Mike should be in the air by now and will hopefully be landing at about 19h00 this evening!
It sounds like he's going to have to go into hospital everyday for a drip but at least he doesn't have to spend the whole time there!

But, but, but - who's going to take care of me?
Give Mike Debby and my best wishes and make him take it easy.
We are thinking of you guys.
Keep well.
I suppose you're home now, hey? Take it rustig, Mike. And PLEASE - you need to add some good colour into your diet - especially veggies, go for the greens, yellows and reds, as raw and unprocessed as possible, and lots of water (not beer). I know you're saying yeuch, yeah right! But it'll help you detox to get rid of the chemicals like uric acid crystals which trigger the gout attacks. Now listen to your friend here, OK? msn emoticon (224)
Hi all
Just got back onto the forum today to read about Mkie and the fun he's been having with his appendix.
Hope you are on the mend and taking it easy.
Malcolm
Hi All...... Who said that you could'nt find family on the net, Got home yesterday, and rearing to go.... Thanks for all your comments and my humblest apologies to CTFM..... I have yet to answer the various emails due out to a few of you, but I should have time (plenty of it ) over the next few days....
Yes, that was indeed a scary episode in my youngish life...... and perhaps a life changing one...... In the space of 5 days, 5 different doctors lectured me on my weight, In Windhoek, it turns out that the doctor who took over my case happens to be the Gastro bypass king of Namibia and gave me a right dressing down about me weight, how much more difficult the operation had been due to all the extra fat, the strain on the body..... it was humbling and perhaps embarrassing for me not to even be able to see me war wounds and that draining bag kept falling off my body due to my boep..... It is with this incident in mind that I am going to abstain from my favourite past time of beer and fat meat meat consumption. Sorry Stennie, when I get down to 120kg , I will have a celebratory braai and beer bash then..... I feel it's now or never.... I have lost 4.7kg over the last 5 days and my gout ridden body should have adjusted the chemicals to be suited to smaller non fatty foods...... I am also eating a lot more fruits of late....
After the deaths of my mother and my brother in law, I rate this weekend as one of my worst times on this earth.... my appendix had already perforated by the time the op was done and I have been informed by the doc in Windhoek, how extremely lucky I had been, the mess could be cleaned up......
I am now going to burst a bubble or two, appendix pain is blerrie sore, but as you have already read, I had the impending gout attack on my right knee at the same time.... I kid you not folks.... the gout attack pain was at least 60 % more ....... That night the nurses injected me with my first morphine shot....... Ooooooh! Tripping people.... discodance msn emoticon (224) What a peaceful place I had been allowed to go to..... what relief, what bliss...... sad to say... it only lasted 5 hours..... but at least I got to sleep....
There is so much still to say on this adventure...... will post later. once again, to all my ex(oranjemund) friends, thanks for your support..... I appreciate it and love you all for it!
woo_hoo MIKE'S BACK!
Welcome home, Mike. I certainly hope the pain and discomfort will be gone soon. Hang in there, my friend!
Regarding your decision to make a change in your eating/drinking habits, GOOD FOR YOU! It's not going to be easy, but the long-term effects will be beneficial, I promise you. We don't want you to land up in hospital again in the future, the site is simply not the same without you!
So, with that in mind, I hope your friends there in town will respect your decision and support you!
And.... I'm glad you made the decision immediately, and not made a so-called "New Year's resolution" - that seldom works - proud of you Mike!
One upside - the next few days you can spend more time on the web, while the TV is on in the back-ground - The SA cricket team is busy giving the Aussies a snot-klap! When I got up this morning, the Aussies were already 15/3 wickets!
Welcome back Mike and congratulations on your decision to get back into shape. You've got everything to gain by doing it. Maybe we can get the 'healthy' members of this site to give us a few tips on how to eat healthy. I am lucky not to have to lose weight, but I definately could do with eating better. Vegetables and fruit are not my thing. Don't even know how to cook the stuff (I'm referring to the vegies here ...), so some recipies would be really welcome.
Great to see you're back Mike. And I hope you take your plans serious. Your family needs you, especialy the baby.
I don' hink the overweight is the problem. If you live healthy enough you may be overweight...
It's the eating and drinking habits. I remembar Barb posting on this issue about 3/4 of a year ago.
I know Janis Joplin said: "Rather short and intence than long and not at all". But what is intence living? A question everybody can only answer for himself.
Great your back Mike. Take care....
Way to go Mike! Its cast in stone if you take the decision to change your lifestyle habits yourself! Thats the biggest hurdle out the way. Congrats on losing the 4 plus kg's. How about a challenge Mikey?? post some before pics so we can monitor your progress?? ... and offer support too of course.
More chicken soup for Mike .. 4 .5 Kg see what it does .. ??? joking .. welcome back Mike ...
Well mike, glad its all over and your´e well again
What surprises me is the weight of your appendix 4+ kg is real big, or is that body weight lost ????
Shall we make a deal ????
You reduce your BMI to about 21, when you reach that, i quit smoking image19
Good luck with your diet and i wish you succes, leave the pea soup away completly ( amongst many other sins) thats not good for purine values and your gout I-T-O
Yes pea and bean soup aint to good.
But a BMI of 21. Now that's not healthy either. You just want proof that Mike wants you to smoke.... image19 image201

You´re right son it should be less then 21 hammer
My BMI:
Ihr BMI beträgt 21.3.
Klasse! Ihr Gewicht ist völlig normal. Schön wäre es, wenn Sie so bleiben. Tun Sie etwas dafür.
I am prepared to give Mike 22, thats my last and final offer
mmmh! Should I take it? msn emoticon (224)
Glad to see you back and you sure have a great support system. I see nobody talks of braaing veggies and running?

Mike does not want to eat the animals food away, you should know, little veggies in O-mund available only Gemsbok
See the challenge i gave him some few posts back. He seems reluctant Up-out
@ Georg ... i am still pondering...
@ John, Michele bought me an awesome braai book for our anniversary this year and there are quite a few awesome fish, chicken and vegetarian recipes in their...... but for now..... the fat and beer have to go......
BMI SCHMI ... its all relevant ... its all an indicator .. how do you measure the short stocky muscled guy ??? for his height he is technically overweight.. but yes muscled .. muscle weighs more than avoirdopoix ( fat ) .. all I know is Mike has far better chance of surviving if falling overboard from a ship in the atlantic .. he will float whereas i cannot .. i rely upon motion to keep me afloat .. so in a few hours i will have expended my valuable and limited resources of energy and succumb to hypothermia and sink to become shark and crayfish fodder .. ,, whereas they would find Mike 2 weeks later still floating albeit horribly sunburned and a few Kg lighter ... ha ha only joking but yes its all relevant .. where is the balance folks ??? ouch life is so full of those questions ... but yes Mike congratulations on taking some decisions that may will a difference ... we all think we immortal and untouchable untill something hits us ... currently I have had my body screaming at me ( inner voice ) .. its saying " you been smoking and drinking too much the past year .. the time for saying and using the excuse .. its been a dificult year so therefore i can is almost over " .. " its time to take responsibility .. you have been blessed with a good and resilient body that has defied a lot of times vagaries , but if you continue the current path you will instead be blessed with lifestyle diseases and the consequences thereof " at least I'm lucky to be hearing this ... time to take charge again ... but yes not go overboard ... sooner be happy than obsessed .. seen enough of them as well .. lean mean unhappy ... Uuugh !!
I agree with Sandy. Too many times I've seen people getting obsessive and going totally overboard, saying "I don't eat this, I don't eat that...." - that seldom works and they snap back in one rebellious move or change the diet so much that they actually eat worse (less nutrients) than before.
I believe in slow change - as long as you are aware of what's affecting your health negatively, and you're serious about working on it, substitution and limiting of all the aggravating factors regularly works much better. That way you wont throw your new dietary plan out the window the first time you have one tjoppie because you "failed"! That's not the way to go. Eating and drinking more of the beneficial stuff, and less of the bad stuff - eventually it will bring change.
Well had my proper full shower for the first time in A week at home this morning, pad still on.... almost fell over backwards when i climbed onto the scale to find that I had lost 7.1kg in total in a week.... that ain;t healthy...... all I am doing s0 far is avoiding sugar cooldrinks, fatty meats, beer and oil soaked foods, which those of you who know me, I live for.... will try to eat a bit more...must say i am enjoying the massive fruit variety Michele brings home...
Well done Mike! You will still get "lus" for a lekker juicy piece of meat and a beer - but it looks like you're strong and will keep moderation in mind.
You've got guts, pal! bravo
woo_hoo Good for you Mike......
woo_hoo well done rooster
7 . 1 kgs .. if I lose that I look like I'm falling through my arse ... Mike the loss is part of the post op and eating light for those first few days ... you lucky to be able to shed that so quickly .. most people it stays stubbornly put ... and yes no harm ... just keep the shed under control .. in fact sometimes a lot of people experience rapid then slow as the body adjusts .. slowly but surely is better long term .. in about a week or 3 you will start to feel good better and better .. just take it slowly ...
The bloody gout is becoming a problem now, due to all my chemicals being muddled up again, I now have gout in my knee and ankle...... Aaaaaagh!
Geez Mike. You must to take care of yourself. Serious. You're still so young...
Thanks Jnr, I am working on it......
rooster
Stick with it - No pain, no gain........you just have to get over this hurdle first... rooster
In all likelyhood its a form of detox occuring due to dietary change ... detox will shift acid and all other balances in the blood . so yes wreak havoc till system settles down .. and yes gout is at times a complex ailment ... what works for one individual will not work for the other ...
Its like someone i knw who nevr suffered a hangover ,, reason,, he would consume so much each night , eventually having a totally overloaded bruised and sluggish system that his system had an alcohol level the next day that would carry him through till when he got home and poured his welcome home stiff brandy and coke .. when he was admitted to hospital for a medical problem ... he suffered a hangover of monumental proportions for a couple of days ,, apart from severe headache actually had physical pain.. so yes when toxins of whatever origin exit they can cause discomfort ...
Sounds like Frankie quirk! sorriso2
Nope it was not our dear old Uncle Frankie .. I really liked him .. a kind and sensitive person ..
To come back to this topic - I never got the chance to read in what hospital Mike was before we left here.
Arrived in Windhoek in the early morning hours of the 13th of December after driving straight through the night - then had to sort out all the camping equipment, reload the trailer, reload and re-organize the packing of the car (due to the fact that Cobus and Boet was mos in that moerse accident the week before we had to go on holiday).
Also - and why the hell nobody knows or can explain to us - for the first day when we arrived all of our cellphones could not connect with the MTC network but all of us have roaming.... none the less...
....after re-organizing, re-packing etc the men decided we might as well hook up the trailers and set off. I had to hurry to the mall to buy the most important groceries (also had all 4 teenage kids in the car with me - may the Lord protect me from such fate about their choice of music in future..) then took off to catch up with the others..
So, I never got to go and see Mike in hospital.... sorry pal, I truly did want to, but when you got a lot of Kalahari boertjies around you who hasn't seen the sea for 2 years and add the matter of lack of ample transport to that, then you are not your own boss anymore.
Glad to see that you are ok again and that all went well. Keep us up to date with the weight-loss....
