After Sandy did such a fabulous job of marketing "Tarducken" I went out and bought one.
So yesterday afternoon I popped it into the oven for 3.5 hours (3.5 KG), preparing it for our last nights Christmas Dinner. Wow it really was a great piece of meat. Or shall I say, 3 pieces of meat. I also made a sauce for it with cranberry juice, cranberry jelly, beef stock cube, a few cloves, 2 bay leaves, chopped onion and tomato. Once all cooked together I put it through a sieve and thickened the sauce/gravy with a little flour. Well I must say that it really went down a treat. Thanks Sandy for your excellent marketing job!
Now we will be eating Tarducken till easter as there is still at least 2 KG left..... ha ha
I take a bow Dunja .. ours is currently defrosting in the fridge for night of 26th ,,, I-T-O
What does a live tarducken look like, haggis?
I-T-O
Kind of like .. a round beastie with short legs ,,, they snap off the legs before smoking stuffing and freezing it .. ha ha will post a pic of it ... another smaller beastie lurkng in the freezer for whenever ...
WoW! This is weird....... I was on the line today to the Spar Buyer , seeking geese for Xmas dinners, and he sighed ,.... Moaned that he was trying to find something called Tarducken..... and had I heard of it...... Hahahaha!
Now if only I could find who imports the Tarducken.......
swink
Checkers bring it in ... in fact I think I'm going there this afternoon to stock up .. seen some in the freezers ...
Sandy, do your bit for the SPAR group.... try and find out if they import it themselves or is their an agent for the blerrie Turduckens......
thanks

According to the Checkers Ad in to-days Argus. Turducken is deboned Turkey, duck and Chicken rolled into one generous toast. Selling for R99.99 per kg. Beasties with removed short legs? Am I missing something here Sandy.
So Michael get yourself a couple of Turkeys stuff a duck inside then stuff a Chicken inside of the duck and Voila you can sell Turducken's a le Mike. Don't forget to break the little legs off.
Prob diana is the beastie is smoked as well ... so when done its the kosher equivalent of a gammon .. especially so the rich duck meat ... buy one and try it ... mmm just remember to baste regularly ...
I'm not a big fan of turkey or duck...dry birds ain' meant to be eaten.....
Gammon fan I am though....
Don't like turkey either but if it tastes like gammon will certainly give it a go.
Quack Quack its the richness of the duck that makes the diffs ...
Mike .. saw in sunday times .... www.theducklady.co.za she makes and distributes tarducken locally ... dont know if its the smoked variety , but do enquiry ...
Thanks Sandy, forwarded on....
woo_hoo
I nearly bought one today, a mini, 1.5 kgs , R185.00 ,not even enough to feed 4 people, big rip off i think!!!!!!!!!!!!!
looking at it that way suppose yes , but worth it in eating experience ...
Wonder how they taste on the spit?
feedme
Best roasted and basted with its juices ..
Got one when I was in CT, R163.00. Cannot wait to get it into the oven for Christmas eve. Will have to follow all the pointers above and will let you know what the family thought.
Nada, can we visit you on Christmas Eve for tasters...........???????????? ha ha
Nada .. defrost in fridge rub with a bit of oil then ,, a bit of oil and butter in the roasting pan ... keeps it moister ...
Wow! Skinny was talking to me this morning, offered to "build" me a turducken, just had to supply her with the duck turkey chicken, reckons it takes up to three hours of creation........ I appreciated the offer, but humbly declined....... could'nt have the lady slaving away with poultry for three hours......
Thanks anyhow.....
thnx
The turkey has to be smoked ,,, so all best efforts would be wasted ...
Thanks Sandy, will do. Mike V, if its as nice as it sounds, sorry but NO, there will not be leftovers. Otherwise, I will save you a bite, will wrap it for Xmas!
Ah Nada, you are soooooooooo kind but it looks as if I'll have to make do with a cheese sandwich instead..............
Had the Turducken, did it in an oven bag for 75 minutes (1.6kg). Hot or cold, it was VERY nice, especially with a mustard sauce. Unfortunately no leftovers for Mike V!! Will definately try this again.
Mike V, I will have to wait until SPAR opens up again to get bread and cheese for your sandwich.
Nada i had the cooks experience from hell .. after 3 years of buying the frozen turducken and i mean the monsters ... not the small ones .. this year I bought 3 minis ... yesterday evening for christmas lunch contribution at a friends defrosted 2 ... put them both in the roasting pan and continoued with my painting job came in about 3/4/hour later ... strange smell emanating from oven .. oened up .. the one was cooking rotten ... the other one smelling perfect ... I immediately phoned checkers .. they said bring the offending one through ... hell man travelling in the car with this cooling down rotten cooked thing was hell ... had the two price tags in my hand .. they took one sniff .. reimbursed me for the two as the other one was spoiled by being in contact .. I as compensation took 2 from their latest stock ... this morning did the whole routine again and cooked only one ... delicious as per usual .. now what caused this ... ???
1. poor cold chain management ... ie ... some dumb shopper picking up a turducken from the freezer .. shopping for the next hour ... supermarkets should teach their staff .... anything thats dumped by inconsiderate shoppers if it was frozen should be dumped and not put back in the freezer ... I commend checkers for compensating me for both altough I only took in the one .. the other contaminated one is still lurking in my fridge .. i will put it out for the vagrants tomorow .. they have cast iron constutions and it will not hurt them ..in fact it is Ok but I'm not taking chances ..
Tasted my first Turducken to-day. Velly Velly nice indeed. Went to Stephen's family for lunch and there it was cooked to perfection by my sister-in-law. Did I score points for being smart.........I was the only other person that new what it was thanx to you O'munders.
Sandy ... I did see some kind of duck floating kind of funny in the lagoon near Blouberg the other day when I took a drive that way ..... low stock --- "eeeh, we put in da freeza what we get in de begs" .... Now that's what you call a rotten Christmas meal !!! image061
Glad for you that you got your refund on that .... the street scavangers will thank you for the pasella meal another day, as you are about to dish the contaminated one out for them.
Ha ha .. will phone you ...
Sandy! your Tanducken are starting to become popular over here. I did hear a lady describing what they were and how to cook them, this was on the local ABC radio here but the way she described them they were huge and it took hours to cook and would feed the biblical 500. I have googled them and their history seams to date back to the 1700 they were called Yorkshire Christmas pie.
My family gets up here on the 27th!! so I am cooking the traditional way in the webber, first the pork then the turkey the ham and roast beef last and this takes a few hours,.....................so maybe next year the tanducken will be on the menu. Our Xmas day meal was sea food and salad Morton Bay bugs Prawns 'etc' washed down with a crisp white wine drinking-41 (well that's what I was told) so to you all Bon Appetit. image04
Oh well Nada, maybe you'll save me some from next years meal. I hear SPAR will be open on Sunday, 10h00-13h00 and there will be fresh bread and plenty of cheese............
Nada, was there any need to gloat about your tasty but finished Turducken when I saw you this morning..............???????????? rooster trex-073
Well, you looked at me the same way my beloved pets do when they sense that I just might have a wee bite of something tasty for them! I had to burst your bubble!!! Maybe next year?
Good one Nada faceinfood ............!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seeing as it's the season of goodwill to mankind, I'll let you win this one but wait for next year..................... image21
