A nice day down at the Graveyard this morning, the desert is a lekker green, the gemsboks were wandering past the graveyard, the air was clean, no clouds, sun was shining strong.... just perfect and I see the company had removed the tree that had fallen over a few graves....
I walked the graveyard twice, but was unable to find Paul's grave, do you remember what part of the graveyard he is in?
Bring back so many memories ... Joan and Luke .. Urwin Paul and Albert .. they had a nice big pondock in the yard .. many hours spent listening to music there ... Joan and Luke always had an open door for the teenagers a kind of open house .. there was always food .. some nice soup or stew that Luke had cooked up and stashed in the freezer ... I remember the one night a whole crowd of us had descended on the house after a dance .. I was in the kitchen talking .. feeling a bit skraal and hungry I eyed some jars of rollmops on the pantry shelf .. so I thought " why not ? have a few " it became a drunken orgy of eating these pickled herrings .. did not know when to stop ... the suffering the following day ?? .. never touched rollmops since ..
yes sandy, great memories, aunty joan, uncle luke and sadly albert and paul,no longer with us,then irwin, the elder of the three boys and in charge of who was allowed into that huge pondock,we were the lucky ones as our parents were good friends of theirs.i spent many week ends staying over at the lissers,i recall uncle luke pulling up outside in his landrover and all us kids helping to off load the many cases of cooldrinks from the bottling plant, all in those heavy wooden crates,it was indeed an open house for us all, after leaving omund in 1972 and completing my schooling in the uk,i returned to sa in 1976 and met up with albert in cape town,he was training to be a chef.i also met coral alcock, anthony haywood and angela bester and i remember going to a party with them all in cape town, sadly after that we all lost touch but thanks to this great site and mike,we have been able to find out what happened to most of our childhood friends.
Thank you so very much for the photographs of Joan Lisser's grave. I am not sure where Paul's grave is.
I will have to ask my husband, Erwin. Will contact you again.
Paul Lisser's grave is in the old part of the grave yard, Debby, Cathy and I visited the grave yard when we were up in Omund 3 years ago.
