I remember when russel got killed on clintons bike by a drunk driver and the driver got away with it
what a sad time in my life
Oh how I remember that in 1981 I had the largest crush on Russel. Of course he never noticed that I even existed. 202
Russell use to Bully me at OPS, he and Jacques Laubscher liked to knee you in the thigh, kinda like a leg lumme.... he was always sitting at the back of the class next to Sean Emery.... in boarding school years, he turned into quite a nice guy, with many a major party's at his folks house.....
Hi Paul,
I remember that day very well - a very sad day!! Don't know if you remember me, I was Janet Johnson then and I sat next to you at his funeral. I remember I arrived home from being away on holiday and was supposed to speak to him the day I got back - only I received the nasty news that he had been killed the night before instead...
How are you and where are you??
Hi there,
I am new to this site but have strong memories of Oranjemund! Does anyone remember the tragic deaths of Dawie Kerwan and Paul Lisser? I was a Metallurgical Foreman at the time at No 1 Plant and worked the same shift as they did. Hugo vd Merwe was the mining foreman. I still have vivid memories of that fatal morning......
I remember everyone had to wear a bright colour, like yellow to his funeral. It was one of the few times that i saw my brother (Billy) cry. Very sad...
Not to be insensitive but I'mtrying to jog my memory - Russel who?
Russel Pounds.... killed on a motorcycle in the wee hours of the morning, I think by Chris Niewoudt, not too sure....... this was in the mid 80's
Hi Carl,
Yes I remember that day in 1978 - 29th March 1978 - how I remember the date so well is that I and my brother Gary were very good friends of Paul and his brothers Erwin (who is now my brother in law) and Albert (died tragically in a car accident on new years eve 1992).
I had, had a birthday party at the log cabin that Saturday - 26/03/1978 - and we had gone to cleanup that Sunday and then Debby (my now wife) and a group of us had gone to the beach to look for a braai area. We came across Paul, Audrey (passed away last year from CA) and Uncle Luke (Paul's dad, passed away in 2003). Paul and Audrey had said that they would have liked to have come to the party and would make an effort to attend the following year which was never to be. My sister Elizabeth was on duty at the hospital when this mining accident happened.
The sad thing is that Paul's mother, Aunty Joan passed away in April 1976.
Keep well.
Man! That's really sad..... the whole family....I recall the ambulance that was sent out also rolled, killing the driver or assistant? What ever became of the geologist?

Hi Michael, see Richard's post...perhaps we cam also post Dawie Kerwan's name on "Lost Diamonds?
Richard, I worked with Luke and we did a trip to Tsaikop near Luderitz and Luke took one of his sons. I took some home movies and can make out one of the Lisser "boys" kind of hanging onto the tail end of a Unimog we took with the equipment. Along with them were son of Steve Meyer (Security) and they took a .22 with them. I wonder which one it was. Care to let me know? It was around the early 70's I guess. May have been late 60's. Who knows....
Luke was a very dedicated man and was my mentor in the radioshop as an appy. He used a Dutch navy book as a text and spent many hours teaching me the basics of radio in his own time. He had a knack for teaching and lots of patience. Later years we had many a party the Lisser house and it was in the days of Dave Hucker.
Yes the Huckers stayed opposite the Lissers ...The Boltmans , Burgess were regulars at Luke and Joans place .. that was in my teen time 73 +
