Yesterday I got a "plastic shoe" piggy bank for my son from ABSA Bank. It was whilst I was discussing the topic of saving money etc.with a colleague that I had a memory of the big glass bottles that many people had in Oranjemund. Some used it to save money in, some grew ferns in theirs and I even remember seeing one with a boat in the inside.
Does anyone else remember these big glass bottles? Where did they come from because quite a few people had the same bottle? What were they previously used for?
I cannot seem to think what such big glass bottles would have been used for... hammer
I think battery acid was stored or supplied in them.
Was it not one of those enormous Whiskey Bottles. I've got one in the room here next to me full of coins?
Or is the bottle you talking about humungous.
We had a very large whisky bottle in which we stored coins...I do however remember seeing those large bottles at the dispensary ... I-T-O
Those bottles were used for the acid for the power station battery system ... yes they had a huge battery room that was used for emergency lighting and to power an air compressor that was used to start those huge marine diesel engines ...
another interesting thing that was done with those bottles they would have scoobydoo wire woven around them by the owambo ..
I remember those bottles quite well and put one in a bath in CDM to brew beer in.. Ater if filled up a bit, it cracked all the way around....
I must have alzheimers ... can't remember anything about those bottles ... image061
@john, was the beer crunchy?

Remember those bottles; where people would collect say R1 coins and once the bottle was full had quite a substantantial amount of money. Were some of them not used for the cold water dispensers mostly used in office environs? Today the water dispenser bottles are all as a lot of things; plastic, plastic, plastic.
Diana - i had one of those huge whisky (J&B) bottles too - it was supported on a stand so it swung freely - mid 80's Frikkie Frylinck won it at golf which he opened right then & there and the drinks flowed. he dragged it back to my place for an after party - it got finished at that party and the empty bottle left at my place. i then used it for coins too - took pride of place in the corner of my lounge at the Sisters Cottages - memories of that after party came flooding back every time i looked at it. can't remember what happened to it.
