I was only a lighty back in the early 70's, but can any of the "older" crowd confirm that to the west of the Mine Store, before the houses, there were White Fuel tanks and a few trains standing around?
???
I too was a kid, but there certainly were trains, wooden carriages uba cool gang hang outs. as well as rusty coco pans, open cast iron on rails. it was a dump for oil drums too. maybe someone knows more i can't remember what my dads explaination was.
Mike, the old police station used to be where the kennels are today and from there i think was a narrow railway track that lead to the minestore, through the area where central kitchen is today,we as laaities had a rusty koekepan that we drove on the line untill it was overturned ( no injuries ) though.nice days.......... : :
The old police station , did that not become the commando camp after the police station moved ? ( some drunken story behind that one )... I remember getting my motorbike and car licences there the train lines if I remember correctly ran through to central fields workshop where my dad was foreman ...
correct about the army camp, but i believe Rumbles and the police shared the old buildings in the 60's according to my wife,s dad( Father in law) Frans Pieterse.
Here is one of a train being loaded at the Minestore
Mike,
If we can get someone like Diana to convince Jakob Kruger to post we can get it from someone who used to live at the old police station as to what was where.
