We may all be Oranjemunders, We may all have a common link in our memories, but we do span 5 decades in here..... I was wondering what everyones 5 most impressionable songs were from their era.....
1) Electric Dreams - The Human League
2) Buffalo Soldier - Bob Marley
3) Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
4) Forever Young - Alphaville
5) Hold Me Now - Thompson Twins....
(only 5)
And You?
sjoe, difficult one - love my music - but if i absolutely had to choose - here goes:
The Wizard - Uriah Heep
Listen to the Music - Doobie Brothers
More than a Feeling - Boston
Dont stop (thinking about tomorrow) - Fleetwood Mac
Everything I Own - Bread
Bread ... avoid it .. the ballads make people go very mushy especially with a few drinks under the belt ... good for if you contemplating ending it all ... Only joking , but yes your heartsrtings could get severely pulled listening to bread ..
Sandy, put your money where your mouth is, and give us your list! ;D
With or without you - U2
Let's get rocked - Deff Leppard
Money for nothing - Dire Straights
Candle in the wind - Elton John (I know, I know, confessions a' la Springer)
Electric Dreams - ELO
Master and Servant - Depeche Mode
Must be too much money so mouth pretty full ..
::)
Ok how many of you lot remember "Crimson and Clover over and over and over and over at every single pondok you visited for coffee!!!!!!
Yvette
Greats from my time early 70s - "Pondock Music!"
1. A Whole Lot of Love - Led Zeppelin
2. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
3. Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
4. After the Gold Rush - Neil Young
5. Heartbreaker - Grand Funk Rail Road
6. Jumpin Jack Flash - Rolling Stones
7. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
8. Here Comes The Sun - Beatles
There are plenty more!!!
Richard 8)
Thats the music Richard, thats real music. Yes Yvette I remember crimson and clover o....ver and o....ver very well.
In my experience, the favourite song requested by most Oranjemunders was "Leaving on a Jet Plane"
Kennuf ~
Your memory must be fading...wasn't it "Babbelas Blues"? Or was that YOUR favourite?
Did I write that???
Quick Kenny, change your Avatar again, it will confuse Pete...... ;)
I've been here nearly 3 decades - which era would you like me to choose from?
Take your pick, Michelle ~ as long as it doesn't include Runrig!!!
Okay well that rules out the last decade because Runrig is all I've been allowed to listen to since marrying Mike!
Hey Oppie,
Great list my good friend . . . I also seem to remember a stream of Beatles music, and a little Cream, oozing out of Paul and Erwin Lisser's pondok. Heck, I spent so much time there, I should know the words!!
Give our love to Debbt, Juanita and Erwin . . . also to Diana, if she remembers me!!
Cheers good buddy!!
Keith.
sandy, for all your jabbering - still haven't seen your list :)
Yvette, who can ever forget Crimson & Clover - was the ultimate lovers ballade at the youth club.
I could'nt remember Crimson and Clover, so on Saturday I went through my mp3 collection and there it was, listened to it, remembered it, and the strange thing being, was during my friday night movie, they played it in the romantic comedy i was watching, whats the chances,,,,,
Of course I remember you Keith.
All my jabbering ... I think I can echo Michele ..which decade .. I beenn on this planet now half century .. furthermore there seems to be a mixed up mush of music songs etc in my head and I get names and songs confused .. must be brain damaged in some way or other ..
Hi Delia,
Used to listen to this over and over at Natasha le Roux's place too. Delia do you remember R Speedwagon??????
Yvette
Hi yvette - yes, i remember reo speedwagon big time - as u said we used to play it (well, music in general) full blast at natasha's - she was mad about anthony martheze at the time reo was big and there was a certain song of theirs she had dedicated to him - can't remember it's name now. amazing how music can transport one over time - like crimson & clover - haven't heard it in a long time but if i just hear the name i can see in my mind's eye all the lovers slow dancing to it at the youth club. another band/song she (both of us actually) dedicated to anthony was Ant Music - Adam & the Ants - remember them?
The last dance at session was 90% of the time was crimson & clover.........
which decade, good question........
earliest memories are of LOUIS Armstrong and alot of brass,
T rex - Marc Bolan, posters of him and his wild hair....and the old record player that you could stack LP's on or replay one record over and over by coiling the strap around the returning arm,
followed by Pretty Belinda and Cecilia in a Pondoc with a bath that had been cut to create a two seater.
Beatles (free badges from lucky packets),
anyway everything seems to be redone every decade or so.....
it's all mishmashed
Hmm - so many songs, so much time:
Funnily enough Deep Purple's smoke on the water and Hush will make my list...
As well as Simple Minds - don't you (forget about me)
Talking Heads - road to nowhere
Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
Guns and Roses - Paradise city
Van Halen - ice cream man
and a Beastie Boys song, I don't remember the title - but it become a bit of a drunken theme song...
Paul - didn't you once own a Roxette album? I noticed that you never included that in your list... Man, you had issues back in the day ;D
nice choice warren - had mike not restricted us to 5, Jimi's "hey joe" would definitely had been there for me too. such a cool number! (i should've been at Woodstock)!
jeez, Talking Heads - now that's a blast from the past - haven't heard them for ages - they immediately take me back to my hostel days in the late 70's. i think i had their album "psycho killers"?
Warren - this fascination with Roxette must be a family thing!
Delia - Psycho Killer is an awesome song - that's the song that made me a fan in the first place, along with Slippery People and Burning down the house.
Michele - You know what is odd?
Generally, according to Mike, the 31st Dec 1989 - was the day that the music died... But I'm sure that Roxette was a 90's band.
No accounting for taste ::)
Oh - I remember that beastie boys song - Paul Revere.
What do you mean no accounting for taste - he married me didn't he!
You know what Shannon wanted (and got) for her birthday - an MP3 player so that she could listen to her own choice of music and not the stuff Mike is always listening to!
Awe shucks Diana, thank you . . . it is a mere 32 years ago that I turned 21 without much fanfare in my parents home - I still have the photographs of you!!
It must be the quitest 21st, unless we went to the Pondock to listen to some good music, and have a few drinks.
Best regards,
Keith.
Ok well the songs thats post of stuck were : the lebanon human league , everything counts depeche mode , the riddle nick kershaw , wild boys duran duran , lets go all the way sly fox
Keith I'm sure we all went to the pondok to listern to good music and have plenty drinks and..........................
Don't panic Keith we all fell down of course.
Don't you guys think that no matter what decade or "culture" you came from, us Oranjemunders perhaps (1) started drinking at a young age? (2) Drink a lot?
8)
Please clarify...what is a "young age" and how much is "a lot"????
dead rite mike,it was given in a medicinal capacity by our over stressed folks, alchohol pluss letting the kids do what they want, not getting any complaints ,equalled peace for the elders, sleep soon followed 4 us kids, parents could now go have a ball,no fear of any body entering youre house or robbing youre property, happy days brother
Yeah, Diana . . . I think you're right . . . we must have!!
I must pull out the old photos, put them through a scanner and post them!!
Okey dokey.....In no particular order......
i) Penny Lane - Beatles (listen to the bass line.)
ii) Mandy - 10cc (if you don't know the song then....??)
iii) Selling England by the Pound - The real Genesis.
iv) Midnight Diamonds - Cliff Richard - (go on laugh, I don't care - brilliant song)
v) Sylvia - Focus (Pete knows this one. Pretend you want to watch rugby at his place and he might even play it for you......)
Oh, just one more........
Boys are Back in Town and Dancing in the Moonlight by.....Ouch......
(Kenny lets out a small scream as Heather whacks him over the head with a small meat cleaver and let's him know in no uncertain terms that his time is up and he really is the weakest link..........)
In no particular order, these are the records I most remember when I was in OM from 55 - 66. The Twist came out in the early 60's which was very popular but remember when the Beatles came out in the 60's they were very much frowned upon. Long -haired layabouts. Then they made the statement that they were probably more popular than Jesus Christ and their records were banned from the South African airwaves.
My Old Man's a Dustman - Lonnie Donegan (I knew all the words, but because a lot of it is Cockney rhyming slang, never understood a word of it!)
Speedy Gonzalez - Pat Boone (my first single!)
Lucky Lips - Cliff Richards
Batchelor Boy - Cliff Richards
Apache - The Shadows
Let's Twist Again - Chubby Checker
Twist and Shout - The Beatles
Wild Thing - The Troggs
Remember this is late 50's early 60's when music which was allowed was very tame.
For some unknown reason I was a fan of Cliff! And he's still going strong.
I know that Jim Reeves used to be very popular. He made a film in Kimberley called "Kimberley Jim" and his popularity was sealed. But no, he isn't on my list!

As a kid, I always sipped the froth from my old man's Windhoek Export (dumpies with dark blue label) but never took to drink until I was 19 or so. Living in a pub does that! Like working in a chocolate factory.
Anyway, Anne has listed some of the music I listened too. I also got into LM Radio from really young and was heavy into the Stones and Beatles. David Davies' Sunday Hit Parade. Go check this memory out at my blog: http://iscatterlings.com/lm-radio/ (http://iscatterlings.com/lm-radio/)
i pod essentials- the best of Doors
Canned Heat and Creedence Clearwater?
Frank Zappa - "Weasels Ate My Flesh" & "Overnight Sensation"
